I and another poster got a Curt Admonishment from Manhattan back in the day, for saying something snarky about defenders of the Confederacy in a GQ Civil War thread (didn’t know better). Not sure if a Curt Admonishment circa 2001 counted as a Warning.
I’ve gotten two, both a long time ago, both kinda nonsensical.
The first one, about 10 years back, it was really unclear what I’d done that I was being warned about. I’d made only two posts in the thread, and to try to get some clarity on it, I asked whether I was being warned for the first post, the second post, or some combination of the two. Neither the mod who gave the warning, nor the admins, would answer that.
The second time, more like five years ago, I quoted something stupid the NRA said in the Positive Gun News thread. (If the NRA said it, it had to be positive gun news, right? ) They warned me, but couldn’t make up their minds what for - initially it was threadshitting, then I guess they must have decided that didn’t really apply, because in the end what they warned me for was some other content that I hadn’t even seen on the page I linked to as the source of the quote. Very strange.
My takeaways are: (1) if they want to warn you badly enough, they’ll do it if they want to, and figure out the justification later (or not), and (2) if an acerbic old guy like me has only gotten two warnings here in 21 years, I’m doing pretty good actually.
I’ve been noted a couple times but never warninged and never pitted. I have started a couple pit threads that turned into reverse pittings of me, but no one’s ever been ticked off enough to muster the energy to start one on their own.
I’ve had three or so over the same period of time. I’m controversial.
More interesting is whether a mod has ever been warned by another mod. I’m thinking it’s unlikely but in 20+ years, someone must have come close and pm’d conversations must have been had.
I think I’ve gotten 5-6 Warnings over the years, mostly either political jabs in GQ or Personal Insults to Assholes. One got rescinded and two are totally bogus. The others I freely cop to. I believe none of the people I Personally Insulted is on the Board any more. Banned for being assholes.
I’ve gotten two or three warnings over the years. As I recall, they were times I was feeling lower than usual and did something stupid. The warnings were accompanied by warms notes from the Mod urging me to talk to my therapist and psychiatrist.
I think I got a mod note not too long after I joined. I didn’t know suggesting someone posted a topic in the wrong forum constituted junior modding. I wasn’t rude about it, and neither was the mod. I was mortified, though.
Nothing in the four years since. I’m not a person who pushes the envelope.
Yeah, but that’s not getting a Warning because of your unpopular opinion. You got the warning for the possible insult. You are arguing you get reported for your unpopular opinions. But reporting and moderating are different acts, enacted by different people.
The evidence that you were modded for being unpopular would, in my opinion, require pointing out other people who did the same thing, and the mods were clearly aware (having either replied to them, gave them a note, or similar) but did not punish them.
I would, if I cared to dredge up old stuff, argue that happened to me a couple times. But, since they happened after my Warning and my argument why my Warning wasn’t deserved, I tend to think it was just that my argument was convincing enough to get them to consider another angle the next time it happened.
A few years back, (at least) received two warnings that were justified. There was a particular poster that got under my skin more than I should have allowed.
More recently I got one that was borderline. I apologized and it was rescinded.
You are correct. No, I didnt get a warning for my unpopular opinions. My unpopular opinions just were reported because they were unpopular. My activity in most of the cases was borderline.
