OK, now it’s snowing.
As requested; about 6" in; aka “halftime” of this snowpocalypse.
Drae, iffn you wanna get off the ground before you head northward, I have friends in Parsippany with a hot-air balloon. That’s where I eat Thanksgiving dinner 1.
took the bike out for a spin earlier; was going to get fresh Eye-talian bread for dinner from Panera but it was too slippy; couldn’t get any traction on the uphill road in the next development. Too high a gear & you can’t get started; too low a gear & you spin the rear wheel. Did pass all the cars on the main road while riding on the sidewalk/grass
(there was enough snow that I couldn’t tell which was which).
OMG! Spongebob lives in your tank??? ![]()
We have about 6" in my part of the DC burbs. It’s very cold and windy and the streets in the neighborhood are an icy mess despite the plow coming through several times. I work for the public schools and thanks to all the weather closings, tomorrow will be day #5 of the weekend. We’ll be paying for it in June, but that can’t be helped, so I’ll enjoy it for now.
Well, his pet snail Gary does at least, LOL. I have seen the olive nerite snails go in and out of the Spongebob decoration.
Here is a blog I have started about the tank. I update it every Saturday.
A Year in the Life of a Planted Tank
![]()
I have so much to update about it this week already!!
Currently have:
3 large marimo balls
6 fronds Hygrophila corymbosa stricta
1 African Onion bulb
3 aponogeton bulbs
1 Water lily bulb (not sprouting, suspect a dud)
3 Java Fern
1 Windelov
Large mat dwarf hair grass
5 Olive Nerite Snails
Some pond snail hitchikers
2 Fancy Male Guppies
2 Fancy Female Guppies
6 Emerald Cory Cats
Coming soon: 2 female Albino Swordtails.
I have spent my entire bonus on this tank. No more! Good thing my hubs is working part time again at Walgreens and he graduates this May with a guaranteed position at Walgreens. He said they will give him a $20,000 sign on bonus. I cannot wait for him to finally be done with school, he has worked so hard for this.
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he.
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!

It actually is snowing here.
Echinacea will help.
The actual work part of my day was fine, the commute (both directions) would have had Mother Teresa drop-kicking puppies. See my post in the mini-rants thread.
If anyone wants to send some precipitation my way (my area is now in a drought, sayeth TPTB), I’ll happily give you at least 20 degrees of our unseasonable low 70s. Gets to be a pain dressing for a day that swings from 34 to 72.
Hi Mumpers,
Today was special. Without getting too complicated, we bought (from absolute morons) a 48,000 watt dimmer rack. This can carry enough power to supply 3 regular suburban houses, with room to spare. They did such a piss poor job of wiring it together that it is going to take 2 days and $300 worth of wire just to make it safe. Most of the connections just pulled apart as they forgot to torque them down. How they did not kill someone and leave them as smoking cooked bits of well done meat is beyond me.
Look, my first name is Kirk, I have been Capt Kirk all of my life. When I am frustrated I scream Khaaaaaaaaan all the time. I get a pass and no N.O. is required. I own it.
Jim
Rode the motorcycle to and from work, kinda wish I had brought my gloves for the ride home as my fingers got a little cold.
**FCD **said there’s about 4" in our driveway. I’ll decide what I’m going to do in the morning. Schools are already canceled. I’m not going to set the alarm - I’ll just get up when I get up and decide then. Because I can. But for now, I think I’ll hit the rack.
MWAH!!
If it is a temperate water lily, it somehow knows that it is Winter and will grow in the Spring. I have bought water lily bulbs that were duds, however. Don’t throw it away.
I had an Amazon sword plant growing in dirt, that thought it was Spring in South America when it was February in the USA, and bloomed.
What is your substrate? The plants look very good.
I thought nerites were salt water. ![]()
Corys are very, very good at cleaning up.
A low fish load is good, it is easier to keep everyone alive.
That filter tube looks familiar. Is that a thirty or forty gallon tank?
Among many many geek hoobies are aquariums.
Does it show? ![]()
what’s a hoobie?
I went to irk and irked all damn day. 'Twas a Monday on a Tuesday.
Oh Captain, my Captain…
I was joking about rebuilding a dimmer rack. Should I try to guess what you’ll do tomorrow?
When I was in high school, the old rheostat dimmers in the TV studio would signal their imminent demise by making the place smell like fried chicken.
One of Boobio’s hobbies. ![]()
Nerites breed in brackish water and live in freshwater, however, there are some salt water species. The good thing about them in a freshwater tank is they will not lay fertilized eggs because the eggs have to be laid in brackish water.
My substrate is Black Gold Waterhold Cocoblend organic potting soil (about 1.5"-3") with 1-2 inches of Onyx Sand on top. They tend to mix when I move plants or the fish root around in the substrate, but it doesn’t bother me.
It’s actually a 20H tank with a Marineland PF0150B Penguin Power Filter, 20 to 30-Gallon, 150 GPH. I figured go big or go home. LOL
The fish like to surf in the current created by the output.
here is a video of them playing at night.
I am so loving that I finally got a fish tank. The last time I had fish was right after we got married, and when my last fish passed when the twins were 2 (my plec Cal Fishkin) I didn’t get anymore. That’s been 3 years without any pets at all.
Sayeth the dookie butt…![]()
Up, caffeinated, off to work.
Happy Birthday Spaz!!!
According to the thermometer outside my garage, it’s 7° right now. The yard is snow-covered, but I didn’t look at the driveway since I’ve already decided I’m not going in - at least not now. I refuse to drive in this cold on streets of unknown condition for a temp gig.
I already sent an email to my boss and his boss to that effect. When the sun is up, if the neighborhood roads look OK, I might attempt it, but probably not.
Happy Spaz Day!!
I’m letting **FCD **sleep in since I know he was up late - he woke me at midnight when he came to bed. Not that he came in and said “Hey, wake up! I’m coming to bed!!” That would be rude. My sweetie is not rude… not normally.
I didn’t get that much more sleep than he did - it was probably 10:30 when I went back. But since I’m not going in today, who cares.
I’ll be helping **FCD **install a new door into his paint booth today. The current entrance is thru the bathroom where the aquarium sump and filters are. It’s a good idea to keep the gaseous nasties of spray painting away from fishies’ water, so he’ll seal the old door and install a new one. And I’ll help.
I’ll also work on my latest afghan - the scrap-user. I’ve got a big plastic box full of assorted size balls of assorted colors of yarn, and I pick the next ball as the previous one runs out. I’ll be glad to be rid of all the bits.
And that’s my day so far. Happy Wednesday!
