Hello To You, New Dopers

Noticed a lot of new people on the board lately. Kind of rude of us not to welcome them to the boards. Well, except Crunchy doing his thing in his Newbie column.
I would attempt to name some new people I’ve noticed, but I wouldn’t want to leave anyone out.
Hey, Frank O. Pinion, being a farmer you have one of the hardest jobs on earth. You are to be saluted. And no, just because you are a farmer doesn’t mean that you are stupid…not at all.
So Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards to one and all, thanks for joining. Enjoy.

awwww…<blush> garsh darn ultress. Mighty sweet of ya to welcome us newbies. Think I’m gonna like hanging out here.

Ultress
How kind of you to welcome us. Much appreciated. Hope all the newbies read this. If you wanted them to read it, you should’ve labeled the subject

“Hey, you, yeah, YOU NEWBIE SLUG”

Thanks ultress, appreciate the welcome. I have been lurking here for a few weeks as a guest and last night i finally decided to stop being so damn lazy and register. I can see there are some intelligent and witty people here, and I am going to enjoy my stay.

what happened to that little german boy who was posting?

Did I scare him away with my lewd advances?

Don’t be afraid newbies! Jump right in! Have fun, and welcome to your new addiction. Just slightly less dangerous than heroin

I resent the idea you seem to assert here that I am not rude! How dare you! I’d take you to the Pit for that if it were, you know, important or insulting or something.

Just wanted to add to ultress’s fine welcome. I did the usual road to starting: I lurked for a while and then decided to join. I posted a few things here and there, but then stopped for awhile. Being a newbie can be intimidating (hell, I still feel like a newbie), but stick with it. You may feel unfairly abused (especially in G.D.), or that your posts go unrecognized (My first real thread had 2, count them 2 responses), or that your wit and charm is ignored (Since I have to say it myself, my Boardfather thread was damn funny). Don’t let it throw you. This is a great place and you just need to stick with it.

Welcome and Enjoy!

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I’ve been meaning to go collect my abuse from Crunchy Frog for quite some time now, but the job/pregnant girlfriend/sale of house has kept from everything but the occasional random post.

GingerOfTheNorth ordered me to come here, read, and post immediately. What choice did I have?

It was the week of September 11th that really dragged me in. The growing concern of people waiting for regular posters nearly brought me to tears. I found myself wishing and praying for people I’d never met, seen or otherwise was familiar with at all. I smiled and breathed a sigh of relief when some poster’s name showed up. It was a strange feeling.

I don’t regret it tho. Not for a minute. I get much insight as well as entertainment from the posters here.

Thanks again!

Well, Cruncy, you are damn rude to the newbies in your column. I started trying to read it, but geesh, they get so long that my eyes started crossing. Keep up the good work, it’s funny and makes the day go faster.

::Puts out beer, yaki mandu, and nachos::

Thanks! And it’s good to meet everyone. Although Jarbaby’s warning is both too little and too late, for me.

Thank you to the welcome wagon! I too am a newbie. I’ve been lurking around for about a year now. I always enjoyed reading the message boards and I felt it was time for me to join the ranks.

Thanks, ** Ultress!! **

I’ve been around just a little while, but have that godawful newbie feeling of butting-into-conversations-where-i-don’t-belong a lot of the time. There’s little cure for that one, but your welcome made me feel like it’s o.k. to post… uh, it is, isn’t it (gulp)

I love reading the boards here, though, and hopefully I’ll stick around for a while. At least long enough to figure out a sig…

Smashed Ice Cream

What, was the username Buck Naked already taken?

Hey, Yondan, can I have one of yours? Thanks, man! <pops top>

And a big thanks to Ultress for the howdys.

I guess that it’s easy for us newbies to feel picked on or ignored. But I also think it’s incumbent on us to understand that there’s probably a lot of good reasons that they keep newbies at arm’s length for a while. Sounds like they’re trying to assimilate a big influx of us all at once. A lot of the ones they’re getting right now may not be all that familiar with the local culture, too <speculation on the reasons for that omitted>. They also seem to be getting more than their share of trolls and drive-bys lately.

But if you’ve been reading the threads on pay-to-post, you’ll note that one of the big concerns is that it will discourage potential newbies from de-lurking. They really do value new blood and new ideas around here.

I also want to say that I’ve already signed up for the pre-registration discount. I like it here.

Ultress, what a very nice thread! I would like to say welcome also, and tell all the newbies to make sure they behave, clean up their mess in the kitchen (your mother don’t work here, you know), and let them know that I accept candy and good books. In case, you know, you all want to send me presents or something.

Can some of you tell us what brought you here? I love hearing all the various ways the SDMB is found.

And some of us share more fellow-feeling than you might expect. I still feel like a newbie in some forums, and there are plenty of people who have been here much, much longer than me.

It’s all relative. Welcome, and thanks for keeping this place fresh and interesting.

Hey, that mess was there when we got here!

well i gotta say welcome to all the new folks

and thanks to all the more experienced folks (somehow it just doesn’t seem like the place to say old folks)

now a suggestion to the newbies: get your ass to a dopefest so you can buy me a drink

Yea the stories on why you started posting here/joined the board are fun to read.

‘It all started on a cold, lonely, dark night…no wait…that’s not right.’

‘It was love at first sight…no…not right again.’

Actually, one of my goodest friends from Canada, CanadianSue brought me to the board. I posted the very first time…in the wrong forum. TubaDiva moved my thread from the Pit to here. Talk about embarrassed. I didn’t post again for a few days. Then I just kinda slid into the community. Even had my very own Pit thread for a while. I love this place and I love the people. I don’t post every day, or even read the boards every day, sometimes I get on a roll and post lots and lots, especially early morning when the boards load fast. I’m sarcastic, pretty much blunt, and sometimes have to be taken with a grain of salt. But that’s me and you are you so let’s get ready to rumble.

Thanks for the welcome!

And I was forced to join - held down…against my will! (You know who you are)

Pretty interesting place. Helps pass the work day along that is for sure!

And - sure - I’ll go to a Dopefest…you gonna buy me a drink?
