Heroes 2/5 - "Distractions" (SPOILERS)

Peter bugged me. First he begs Claude to help him, and then he tells Claude to stop telling him what to do.

But it was cute after Peter landed on the taxi, and Claude says “You cleared your mind”. Only with Claude’s accent, it sounded like “You Claire’d your mind.” Heh.

Funny how Peter recovered more quickly from impalement than a punch.

Claire’s mom – does she have the most thankless role or what? Poor woman. She’s just a prop.

He’s still running for the House of Representatives.

As for the pseudo-Voice thing, didn’t he do the same thing in Peter’s dream/vision when Peter was in prison? I don’t believe it’s Eden’s Voice as she killed herself before he could do his brain-eating routine.

Well, to be fair, it was more like…

Peter: Teach me.
Claude: Forget your family and friends. It’s the only way to learn.
Peter: … Teach me in a way that doesn’t involve me becoming a sociopath.
Claude: Okay. (throws Peter off roof).
Peter: …  :smack:

And, it turns out, Claude was dead wrong.

I haven’t read some of the other threads, because I usually watch the episode on TiVo later in the week. However, anyone else caught that the symbol on Hiro’s swordis the same as the Jessica-identification tatoo?

Also, the shrink was clearly moving and moaning, she was injured not killed.

And, what powers does Scyler now have? He absorbs powers from people he’s killed, but I’ve forgot who-all he’s killed. He has the ability to move objects (metal only?) that was his first kill, what else does he have? Despite the weird voice, I don’t think he has Eden’s power, or he would have escaped the prison by using it.

Yeah, fun episode. Couple of things that I’ve been pondering:

-Syler has some SERIOUS eyebrow issues. No wonder he’s a murderer. I’d be pissed too.

-Why didn’t Syler just kill AED? I mean god dammit I remember watching batman when I was 5 and yelling at the TV when the villain would trap the hero and then walk away confident that his problems were over.

-Telecop is toast. Totally. He’s the only hero that doesn’t really have any major ties with any other hero, and the writers have made his character extra extra endearing. AND they get to twist the knife by killing him right after we find out he’s gonna be a daddy. The only thing left is for him to adopt a cute stray puppy before he gets torn in half.

Isn’t it Sylar? And I think Sylar is more evil than the Batman villains. He wanted Claire’s dad to know what he did to her (that’s my fanwank justification at least).

I don’t think we know what he has other than his native sense-power, telekineses, cryocasting (demonstrated by the murder Matt and the FBI chick are intro’d investigating) and Charlie’s enhanced learning ability.

The show seems to have abandoned two themes. One, that super-powers appeared “in recent days.” And two, any significance to the eclipse, unless there was a similar eclipse 16 or so years ago.

Didn’t Claire’s mom say “our daughter, she survived the fire.” So I figure Nathan did at least know he had a daughter, even if he hadn’t married the mother, and he knew about the fire.

It would be really tacky to tie the bomb to any real-life event. If Peter is the bomb-guy, he could teleport himself now.

AED & Haitian never spend very much time apart. He was bound to be found sooner than later.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Simone’s dad knew or at least suspected Claude’s presence. He was a wise old bird himself. Simone should have said, “we never could find out who was caring for them,” because Claude obviously was. If Simone and Isaac spent a lot of time there, they should have noticed.

I wonder if one of the show’s producers is gay, or at least actively gay friendly. I don’t remember seeing Takai on TV much at all but as soon as he comes out, he lands a job on a popular show. Seems like someone was making a statement about being “out” in Hollywood. Good for them.

Anyway, it seems clear super powers run in families so not only will we see Dad & sis again, but if dad doesn’t have a super secret, I bet sis does. And we haven’t met Hiro-mom yet.

I wondered last week how DL can escape from prison and not have to answer those charges, even if he was found innocent of other crimes. I guess what we’re being shown is just how powerful Linderman is. He basically owns Nathan, and probably owns other congressmen, senators, and important people from the governor on down. The psychologist herself could be owned by Linderman and was told specifically to bring Jessica out and see what she could do.

Not as thankless as Nathan’s current wife. Poor pathetic thing.

The symbol isn’t a spoiler. People have been spotting the symbol all over the place since the very first episode. Haitian wears the symbol around his neck, for instance.

Regarding Sylars voice thing, I think it’s just for effect, to show he’s evil.

As for Sylar’s powers, I think we need to keep a list of everything Sylar’s got and Peter’s got.

With regard to how Jessica died, it was strongly hinted (if not said outright, I don’t exactly remember) that her father killed her, probably accidentally.

I wouldn’t take the whole thing with Nikki being left behind in the mirror and shaking it too literally. I took it as symbolic of her now being trapped in a bystander/witness position in her own body.

Given the fact that AED showed up at the house with the Haitian, I assumed it was supposed to be understood that it was the Haitian who got him out of the cell. He does work there, after all, and was bound to find him eventually.

I don’t recall either of these ever being a theme of the show. The characters were discovering their powers at the beginning of the series, not developing them. I could be wrong, but that’s how I remember it.

Also, I don’t recall that the eclipse was anything but dramatic effect. Am I misremembering?

I can’t remember exactly how they phrased it but the voiceover at the beginning of the show made is seem the super powers were just now appearing. Which reminds me; if Claire survived the fire because of her powers, it took her 15 years to notice she’s indestructible? She never once cut herself all that time? Or has dad been mind-wiping her every so often?

Regarding the eclipse, dramatic effect on what?

I think Lnderman’s identity will be anti-climatic and it;s someone we’ve already met.

Did you get the “hair in eyes = naive adolescent” critique Invisible Guy gave Peter?

Now that the show is successful they’re re-writing a lot of the intro plot to stretch the storyline out.

See, I had no memory of their previous interactions. I thought Isaac calling AED was a total “reveal” - much like AED knowing about the invivisble guy and being surprised that he was still alive. I’m still sketchy on the details of AED, Eden and Isaac’s encounters.

Sylar: I was impressed with his Texas accent - it was rather convincing IMO. Still not certain why Claire or her friend don’t have one, having been raised in Odessa all their lives.

Niki: Ugh, please kill me now. I practically spit out my wine when I heard Linderman’s heavy actually say the words “You’re free to go.” That only makes sense if the police, with Linderman’s blessing, are letting her to go kill her. [sub]Oh please, oh please…[/sub]

And once again, there was NO ONE in the room with the Psychiatrist? “Well, she did subdue several officers twice her size, and she did break a metal baton in half with her bare hands, and based on our best available evidence she dismembered several large dangerous men, but these cuffs ought to hold her.” :smack:

That might be what Mohinder said, but it was clearly nonsense right from the start.

Sylar, the Haitian, Mr Bennet’s organization, Papa Suresh’s research - all of it pre-existed the supposed first development of the superpowers. Even the reveal that Eden has powers, and how long she’s had them and been using them came when the series was still hanging about whether it would continue, not ‘now that it’s successful’.

The original premise may have been that the powers were brand new, but that was clearly abandoned before it ever went to film, with Mohinder’s monologue and the eclipse imagery maybe being a holdover from the early version. But by the time even the pilot was filmed any truth in Mohinder’s statement, or significance in the eclipse was already gone.

This particular crop of people were just discovering their ppwers. That doesn’t preclude other people having discovered them earlier.

There is nothing other than Claire’s statement to indicate that she survived the fire because of her powers, and since she was too young to have a reliable memory of the events (assuming that she was even in the fire in the first place) she’s not a reliable narrator.

Yeah, the “hair in your face” comment was funny. Claude’s performance seemed a little over the top, unless it was his intention all along to use reverse psychology on Peter and he actually wanted him to embrace his empathic touchy-feely side.

Tengu you’re right about the voiceovers though. They lie. This episode they specifically said Claire would meet her daddy.

Dooku, you really liked Sylar’s fake Texas accent? I think Claire’s mom’s accent sounds more authentic.

I’m thinking Linderman might have a power, only because that’s the only way I can justify how he is able to have all charges against DL and Nikki dropped, even ones they got while in jail. The problem is, it would almost have to be some kind of “persuasive” power, which we’ve already seen. Not that everyone has to have a completely different power (for instance, Sylar and Peter both have the ability to get other people’s powers, just in different ways,) but still, this one would almost have to be EXACTLY like Eden’s, and that’s a little much.
Oh, and my prediction is that the large, bald guy that works for Linderman* actually is Linderman.
*I was racking my brain trying to figure out where I recognized him from, and I remembered he was the police bomb expert in Die Hard With a Vengeance.

I had the same thought. It almost feels too easy, but…
Aaaaaaaaaaaand, I just had a thought.

What is Linderman does have a power. Not a persuasive power, but possession. Perhaps spreading his mind around, much like Dowling from the comic series Planetary. He doesn’t need to influence the police, judges, and politicians he’s used to achieve his aims, rather, he could directly control them.

So the fat man could be Linderman, and not be Linderman at the same time.

Better than most “fake Texas accents” I hear on TV. But I’m not from there so what do I know - Jessica Simpson grew up in Texas and her accent in that DirecTV commercial sounds like something Kevin Costner would come up with.

Just going from memory, because I wasn’t paying that close attention, Sylar sounded a bit like an East Texan, and they were in West Texas. Quite different accents.

I’m from Houston, and unless it’s really bad, I don’t notice Texas accents. I did notice Sylar had one, though - so maybe it sucked? Heh.

I wish I had seen the license plate! :frowning:
