Hey Chronos, please stop being a dick to new posters

Okay, so the guy put his post in the wrong forum. And I’m not exactly sure what he’s talking about.

And thread is closed.
All you needed to do to be civil was ask him to clarify his question and move it to Cafe Society. Instead you were unnecessarily rude and unwelcoming to someone who may have joined our community.

Wow.

“Dick” might be a little strong, but “rude” and “unwelcoming” certainly fit.
mmm

ETA: Maybe “dick” *does *apply.

Jesus. Seconded. Not a huge deal, but wouldn’t it be better, for the board, for moderators to spend a tiny bit of extra effort to be welcoming to new posters rather than this kind of flippant dismissal, which may turn off a new poster for no good reason at all?

I think it is a huge deal. This was someone’s first attempt to join in our community and instead of being helpful, a moderator basically smacked him on the nose with a newspaper and kicked him outside.

I’m pretty sure the OP was talking about this series of movies. That’s just based on a Google search. I don’t know anything about the movies.

Rudeness to newcomers has long been part of the culture of this place. It’s not universal, of course, but it has always been present.

ETA: the guy posted in General Questions, which is not that off-base for a newcomer. Gently moving it to Cafe Society after Googling like I did would have been the non-dick move, IMO.

That doesn’t make it acceptable. Chronos’ rudeness was egregious.

I agree completely. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Maybe contact the dude with an explanation/apology along with a tshirt or something?

Fair enough. I agree with the sentiment in your OP, and urge the moderators to do better to be welcoming.

Meanwhile threads that are opened by long-term posters in GQ but really belong in IMHO, Cafe Society or whatever are quietly relocated, without pointing out that someone with thousands of posts should have known better. So why blow up at the newbie?

At least the explanation/apology. He (?) doesn’t have a public e-mail or PM from what I see but maybe a Mod has access to information I don’t?

And I can see where a Newbie could be confused; and having good manners himself the OP starts by admitting that. In a sense there is/could be a factual answer even though we’re talking about a series of works of fiction. If I was to ask “what incident did Heinlein state as our reasons for ending up at war with the bugs” the answer would either be their destruction of one of our settlements or our incursion into their space depending on your point of view. Not our sort of GQ and response but valid to someone coming across us and just reading over the rules.

Also allow me to possibly suggest opening the thread and moving it and possibly posting a general apology or explanation the way Loach did on the “race” question and my question about that closure? OK, part of that was a sort of inside joke between us regulars but it worked.

On the part of the moderators, though? I seem to recall plenty of times a moderator has said something like, “Welcome to the SDMB. This kind of thread is better suited to _____. I’ll move it for you.”

I’ve sent him a friend request.

I’m new here too and if any of my posts or threads had gotten a response like that, from a member but especially a moderator, I’d never have come back and I’d have been telling everyone I’m online with to avoid this place like the plague. There’s a difference between being snarky and just being nasty.

And Crotalus is right that the poster was talking about The Purge movies or show. In that “universe” the government allows a 24 hour period where all crime is legal. I can understand how someone might think that, if x is a given, what if y happens would have a factual answer.

YaKnow ------ I may just have to do the same thing.

OK, OK, friend request sent to you also.

So did I. My first one ever.

So many mod notes regarding forum placement or forum content begin with, “you’ve been here long enough to know…”

Here is a guy who clearly has not been here “long enough to know” and he still gets a rap on the knuckles.

Sorta makes all the YBHLETK rationales meaningless.

I hope **edgar **sticks around, but I won’t blame him if he doesn’t.
mmm

I have definitely seen “Welcome to…” posts from moderators, and I feel strongly that that is how it should be done. I am fairly certain I have seen dickish replies to newbies from mods as well. I can’t think of a good way to search for that, though. And I could well be mis-remembering.

It’s actually a 12-hour period and in keeping with the apparantly now-established policies of this board, your minor error stemming from insufficient research prompts me to heap scorn upon you in a dismissive and sneering manner likely to decrease the odds of you continuing to be an active participant.
So… sneer, etc.

Be careful that Scylla doesn’t challenge you to a sneer-down.
