"Hit On" By Person Of "Wrong Gender": How Often And How Did You React?

  1. Happened to you, and how often?
Several times when I was younger (and thinner) ((And hipper)).
  2. Freaked out, or taken as a compliment?
Mostly taken as a compliment, and declined gracefully. No point in making enemies needlessly.
  3. Ever been the person “hitting on” someone who is into the other gender than you assumed?
Actually, no. But then, I can count the number of times I’ve actively hit on someone on the fingers of one hand.
  4. Want to share your story?
A Senior in High School, working at an up-market deli in a gay-friendly community. A particular customer used to ogle me in a very non-subtle way. One day he asked me something, and being young and naive, I had no idea what he had asked of me (and I can’t remember now what it was). But my gay manager knew instantly what was happening and came over like an enraged mama bear and practically chased the guy out of the store. Afterward, he was shaking he was so upset. He went up a good number of ‘respect’ points in my book that day, too.
