Wow, I know he was considered a ‘boat-rocker’ of sorts, and I never gave his rule-breakings much attention, but it’ll be weird here without him. One of the more aggressive stalwarts, but a stalwart he was. And smarter in general knowledge than I.

Just to echo what the OP and some others have said, I am sorry to see him go. Sometimes he contributed things of real value; and when he didn’t, I could at least shrug and say, “Well, that’s Dio…”

This pretty much sums up my feelings on it.
I didn’t realize he was suspended recently, until one day I wondered to myself “I wonder what Dio thinks of [insert topic].” Then I wondered, “I wonder where Dio is?” So, yes, I did often wonder WWWDS (What Would Dio Say) on any number of topics. But more often than not, I’d tune him out after his initial response, as then it would just degenerate into muleheadedness and whatnot.
Serious error in judgment. Dio was the best poster on this site, bar none.
I will nonetheless always return to this board whenever I have a pressing need to read about kittens and TV trivia.
Heh–count me as another who thought of Collounsbury. Rules is rules; he chose either to break them, or to post so recklessly that he broke them by accident (as in the last instance); I don’t regret his choices for him.
My wife frequents a blog with a one-strike-and-you’re-out don’t-be-a-jerk rule. She’s there instead of here because the rule so vastly improves the quality of conversation: you end up talking with people who aren’t ever jerks (at least not on the blog). Sometimes I think I ought to switch, just to see if I can survive in that format :).

Diogenes is (was, I guess) the only poster on this board that I absolutely refused to engage with in threads (well, there was handy back in the day, too), and even so, I almost got sucked in a few times recently. Yeah, I guess he showed expertise in religion threads but he’s hardly the only expert on religion, and frankly his general threadshittery and jerkishness far overshadowed any positive contributions he made.
I would like to note that I did not always feel this way. I think in the past few years he’s been getting worse.
FWIW I shed no tears. Insulting someone (especially with profanity) outside of the 'Pit is terribly bad form.
On another forum there was this member who, while incredibly knowledgeable in a couple of areas, was a complete jerk otherwise. It was a mistake for TPTB there to keep this member on when such behavior would’ve resulted in most others being shown the door. Eventually, Mr Knowledgeable was banned, but the damage had already been done and other good members who’d been victims of the bad behavior left too.
Good call by the moderating team in this case. It’s their hard work that keeps the SDMB such an enjoyable place.

There, I have now given you more than the equivalent of a years’ worth of Dio’s football analysis.
Overall, I think this sucks. I had hoped he would tone it down a notch of two after his last suspension. I’m disappointed in his loss, yet there’s only one person to blame.

In over ten years here, I’ve never once complained about the moderators, but this is just a fucking stupid move. Yes, he refused to back down from a position once taken, but anyone with half a brain and a sense of humor could see it for what it was, schtick. Too bad these boards are populated with so many humorless pedantic morons who fell into his web so easily.
Hell, go to any of the numerous AGW threads currently on the boards and I can show you a number of people who are doing exactly the same thing Dio did. And I’m not talking about taking a contrary or unpopular position - that is fine. I’m talking about people who post discredited cites that several posters will carefully and painstakingly take apart and show that they are false, only to have the offending poster repost the same cite later on. They are performing exactly the same behavior that got Diogenes banned, albeit with less profanity, the same profanity that one hears dozens of time a week in normal conversation.
Congratulations on making the SDMB a much less interesting place to visit. I hope you’re proud of yourselves.
