I can’t say I’m that sorry about this. Recently it seemed that many otherwise interesting threads became derailed due to Dio’s posting style, and degenerated into “Did too” “Did not” “Oh yeah, prove it” “And so’s your old man” and like that. After a page or so of that I would groan and move on. It got to the point that, on certain topics, I would check to see how many posts in the thread were from him, and if it were more than a few, I wouldn’t bother opening it.
So, while I agreed with many of his opinions, I just hated his style, he was just way too dogmatic.
Roddy
It’s actually about complaining about any other board, to get it off the main site. It would be hypocritical to object to complaining about the SDMB when the entire forum was set up as a protest to the SDMB.
I’m shocked that anybody could possibly be shocked. Dio toed the line so many times it is amazing he had any toes left. I always thought it was just a matter of time until he stumbled over the edge once too many.
Sorry to see his body of specialized knowledge gone ( from here, if hardly the internets - see the GB ), but as above I’m hardly surprised.
Well now that he’s gone, I guess I’ll say this one last time, then bow out of the Dio/Anti-Dio threads for good. My problem with him hasn’t even been his opinions or contentious communication style. Hell, I think I agree with him nearly all of the time, and lord knows I’m never going to be accused of Pollyannaing the place up. The Dio Show name wasn’t dreamt up out of thin air by people who were aggravated by his attitude; he actually had a very disruptive posting style that could ruin a thread even if people wouldn’t respond to him. He would repeatedly post to a thread, one post after another, and would never let his keyboard see a second of fresh light. There have been threads where he’s something like 40% of the responses on one page, many of which were back-to-back-to-back. Three to four posts in a row was not at all uncommon for Diogenes. The following was not an uncommon posting order: Dio, Dio, Dio, Other Doper, Dio, Dio, Dio, Dio, Other Doper, Dio, etc.
That is flat-out disruptive threadshitting. That goes beyond posting unverified citations and stirring the pot. There was no ignoring Diogenes, because he would not be ignored, Dan. He would just keep going until there was nothing left to be salvaged of the thread. No one could derail and threadshit like that man, and if we ever started giving out awards around here, he takes home the gold in that category, banned or not.
I wish you were a mod here. You would bring a bit of sanity to the conversation.
**Dio **made his rope, custom designed it, carefully twisted it, and despite several well meaning attempts to guide him, he hung himself. He got many more do-overs than most posters get.
No! he didn’t!
Yes, he did!
You are wrong!
Keep repeating until you just have to turn the “Dio Show” off. Good move by the staff.
I think it’s important to be clear on this point: Diogenes the Cynic was banned for personal insults and other attacks, not for being obstinate, repetitive, or refusing to admit he was wrong. He might have been warned on occasion for ignoring mod instructions - I’m too busy to check right now - but most of his warnings were just for insulting people outside of the BBQ Pit.
I enjoyed reading his posts - they seemed to emanate from a sharp intelligence.
As an aside, Dio is/was not really like Collunsbury. The latter was a pedantic ass who went way, way over the line many times. That he lasted as long as he did still mystifies me.
And this is exactly why I object to this banning. In my early career here, I tried repeatedly to get people in trouble for personal insults. I was flat out told that a person insult required name calling. And if you will go back and look at Dio’s posts, you will find that he is often said to be personally attacking someone without name calling.
If you banned Dio for taking over threads, I’d be fine with this. If you banned him for finally actually breaking and throwing around a personal insult as defined on this board? Fine. But you didn’t. In fact, you couldn’t even be bothered to give him the normal warning and “privileges under review” post.
But still, Dio killed more threads than Cecil B. DeMille, to paraphrase Blazing Saddles with his, not threadshitting as much as complete shout downs of any alternate opinion.
Several conversations that were interesting to follow became utter wastes of time to read once **Dio **showed up.
Hypocrisy - To tell people to do one thing while you yourself do the opposite.
Giraffe created the board as a criticism of this board. The beginning posts were all about how bad this board was for the decision they made. The mods themselves criticized this board. To then say that other people could not criticize the board would be hypocritical.
I did. She said he was banned for repeated behavior. That doesn’t change the fact that they ignored the normal procedure before banning someone. Normally I wouldn’t say anything about it, but, honestly, I see what they did here as so objectionable that I’m going to point out even the small things.
To what end? I did give him a mod note, but it could just as easily have been a warning. What was important from the staff’s perspective was this: he came off suspension on Aug. 2 or 3, and since then he’d been warned twice (and could have been banned for either one), and he was told very directly that he was on his last chance and needed to improve his behavior, because if he was warned again he was likely to be banned. Knowing all of that, he went ahead and posted that personal attack.
