Hopin' for world peace in the MMP

Johnny, I once remember seeing the reruns of LOS, from the first episodes. In the first four episodes or so Dr. Smith was not a goof but a real bad guy. Then they changed him, I don’t know why.

As An adult my favorite sci-fi was Babylon 5, and it was interesting to see Bill Mumy in that. Also the recurring character of Bester, played by Walter Koenig. Now THERE was a villain!

Jane, I wrote more than once to Spider Robinson and got replies. I also have two battered paperbacks of his that he signed at a bookstore in East Lansing Michigan.

Also, what branch were you in?

Awesome! I know I’m not the only one who gets replies and invitations for meet-ups at bookstores, but it still makes me feel special.

I was Air Force (one term) and hubs was a career Marine. I was stationed in Tucson AZ for a year and then sent to Okinawa for the next three and got out in 1974. It was a very interesting time.

Boo for the win. Gets you both out of the work place and gives him a chance to make a counter offer.

Settling down for the evening with a warm television. Hubby really likes clicking through all the different apps (Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, in addition to our local stuff). Don’t think we’ll run out of stuff too soon.

On the blast door of an old missile silo in South Dakota there is a Domino’s-like sign that says “World-wide Delivery in 30 Minutes or Less or Your Next One is Free”.

Jane, I was in the US Army for three years, 1974-77. My two regrets are that I missed the Bicentennial hoorah as I was overseas in Korea, and that I didn’t stay in longer. I got married and didn’t re-up. Damn. The life suited me. Maybe I could have gone back, but didn’t.

I think stealing catalytic convertors won’t become less attractive to thieves until the ‘recyclers’ who buy them start doing jail time for receiving stolen goods. Just my 2 cents.

I started school in '51 but I only remember doing the 'ol ‘duck and cover’ once. And that was in Pensacola. Big Naval air base there.

Okay Shoe, I will offer a dissenting opinion. Young men tend to fall in love easily. Think about what you might be starting and if you want to go there.

Wifey is working on taxes. (I used to do it but she hated all the cussing.) I should get dressed and go downstairs and try to make some little bit of order out of the chaos down there.
Yeah. That’s the ticket.

2 history degrees. Historians represent! I am definitely scared. I’ll take it to another thread now.

shoe < raises hand > I don’t think you should, unless you really think it would be welcome. I think kisses should be consented to. Go with Boo’s suggestion and ask him out.

Red I support your executive decision! I hope recovery continues to go smoothly.

Metal Mouse Have a great time at Blue Man Group! I am excited for you. They seem like a fun show.

hippy Of course we want to hear all about your life! We post weather reports and meal plans. No detail too small or too mundane. Pull up a chair, pour a drink (mine’s coffee at the moment) and chat.

{{{ nellie }}}

He is a favorite of mine.

Technically it rained here and might do so again. Technically. Oh well.

Oh man, I really miss my mother today. I just saw an ad on YouTube for a movie with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. For whatever reason they are in a river and when they get out he has several leeches stuck to his back. Both of them are freaking out.

One of my mom’s favorite movies was The African Queen and it’s way up the top as one of my favorites too. If you’ve seen it, do you remember the scene after which Bogart has been hauling the boat through the swamp? He’s got leeches ALL OVER. Of course Bogart and Hepburn freak out too, and “filthy little devils” was a catch phrase of ours.

Tatum and Bullock will never be as good as Bogart and Hepburn.

Oh, and maybe my favorite line in any movie EVER was in that film. “I now pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution.”

Second favorite would be from A Man for All Seasons :Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. But for Wales?"

We saw the preview when we went to the movies last week. I should say we saw the whole freekin’ movie! Honestly, I don’t see what anyone would bother getting a ticket. Plus it looked like a rip-off of Romancing the Stone. There was another “preview” that struck me as the entire movie summarized in 3 minutes. They won’t fool me again - I remember too many times when all the best parts had already been shown in commercials and the movie itself sucked!

OK, back to my recliner. I don’t know why I read these ridiculous “historical romance” novels. You know within the first chapter, maybe even the first few pages, who will end up getting married, even tho that doesn’t happen till the last chapter. It’s mindless escapism, plain and simple. But I’ve been reading books of a series, and I have to see how the whole thing wraps up. Oh, and it’s always a Duke, isn’t it?? :stuck_out_tongue:

FCM, please tell me you are not reading Barbara Cartland. Maybe Bertrice Small?

But I don’t judge, I read Clive Cussler thrillers. My dog Mauser is named for a dog mentioned in one of his books, can’t remember which one.

Afternoon all. Swimmin’ has been accomplished and I sauna’ed for 20 minutes, so feeling pretty good (the double cheeseburger and fries from Booger King probably helped. May get a nap in here shortly.

For those commenting on Blue Man Group, I remember seeing them about 20+ years ago in Las Vegas…very unique act. Looking forward to it.

Cupcakes, I remember reading the Analog magazine that had his first published story “The Guy with the Eyes” and I was hooked. And liking Babylon 5 shows you have good taste in SF (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine just edges it out in my list).

I’m also old enough to remember Lost in Space. Enjoyed the first season, then it became a boring mess (IMHO).

nellie, hope it’s nothing serious and you feel better soon.

shoe, somebody (I can’t find it now) made a remark about how IC would take a full-on kiss from you. They were right, young men (I dimly remember being one) can take one item and develop a completely wrong view of the situation. Not that you shouldn’t kiss him; just be aware of the potential consequences…

OK, enough stuff. Nappage beckons.

I think you are exactly right. And police departments have to coordinate-it has to be uniform across every state and consistent, so thieves can’t just drive one county over and sell stolen goods with ease. Register the recyclers, register the scrappers. Require every scrapper to have a believable reason s/he has that pile of cat converters to sell. Take their picture and thumbprint with every sale.

Whew. My friend posted from Ukraine: “I am safe, but I am not OK because my family and friends are not.” May I compliment you, FCM, on the spot-on title for this week’s MMP?

A hearty round of applause for Boo’s suggestion.

Even as a kid, I didn’t like Lost in Space. It was so dark–literally. And Dr. Smith was annoying. I’d probably enjoy it more now. My Mother the Car reminded me too much of the Twilight Zone episode where the car has a mind of its own and keeps taking a man back to the place where he killed a kid in a hit-and-run. Yes, I was a fearful little wimp.

My “How did I watch that??” show is It’s About Time. ( :musical_note: “It’s about time. It’s about space. It’s about the start of the human race.”) Astronauts and cave dwellers. Yikes.

I called USAA. After being on hold for a bit, they sent the payment electronically. It should show on Monday.

:musical_note: It’s about time. It’s about space. It’s about time to slap your face! :musical_note:

We went out to the local Rent-a-Center. They quoted us a price of about $350 to rent furniture for a month. Sure beats the $1700 the stagers wanted to put it in here, with the added advantage that we can actually sit and sleep on the rented stuff. Win!

I’m so glad that worked out, you do need to save money to buy new kitty furniture!

I’ve been sympathizing with your moving pain so much that I forgot where you are moving to! I sure hope you love it

It’s about time, it’s about space, about two men in the strangest place.

Another show I loved as a kid, like some other Mumpers.

Downtown Minneapolis. My kids and 12 grandkids live about 40 minutes from there, as does my wife’s niece. We love Portland, and especially our neighborhood, but it’s time.

I was very impressed with Rent-a-Center. They’re professional and can provide used or new furniture. No delivery or pickup charges.

I have been retired for 1 1/2 years. I was scheduled to go to lunch today with a former colleague today. He was the fire sprinkler manager at the alarm company where I worked. He was never a happy employee and it did not surprise me to find that he had left the company for a competitor.

I was waiting for confirmation this morning and heard nothing. I understood. In a service driven industry, sometimes service calls pour in and can really disrupt scheduling. I finally heard back. He sent a text saying that his day is falling apart. I replied that I understood and we could reschedule. He replied “Do you want to come back to work?” I said no thanks. I thought it was in jest, but he stated a figure. I replied that my licenses are all lapsed but it was a handsome offer.

Actually, it was $20K (USD) less than I was making when I retired.

We will see if he ups the ante…
