Hot Dog! It's the MMP!

Ellen, it is about the Antichrist. Or an antichrist, anyway. It’s by Michael O’Brien, and it’s part of a series. That one is about a monk. The first book is called Strangers and Sojourners. In order, the titles are Strangers and Sojourners, Plague Journal, Eclipse of the Sun, Sophia House, A Cry of Stone.

A few days ago a co-worker asked me what my absolute favourite books were. Not the best books I’ve ever read, but my favourites. We’ve got staff blurbs stuck in a lot of books, and I think I’m singlehandedly supporting Robin McKinley and Chaim Potok’s estate. It’s a very difficult thing to do, listing your favourite books. So far, my list looks like this:

Orthodoxy- G. K. Chesterton (theology)
Deerskin- Robin McKinley (fantasy/fairy tale)
My Name is Asher Lev- Chaim Potok (fiction)
The Seven Storey Mountain- Thomas Merton (spiritual autobiography)
Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen
Outlaw Cook- John Thorne (food essays)
Lilith- George MacDonald (children’s fantasy)
Till We Have Faces- C. S. Lewis

I think a list of the best books I’ve ever read would be totally different. Maybe I’ll work on it for the next few days.
kotick, could you record your performance? Enquiring minds want to know that a turkey feather/antlered bellydance looks like.

Record a white dude bellydancing, are you mad Lissla, that would be more dangerous than the worlds deadliest joke

Hmm. Lissla, I’ve only read one of those books. And I’ve read a lot of books. But I’m horrible at taking book recommendations. No matter how many people tell me to read it, I won’t, because you’re not the boss of me and I’m not reading your book!!! Childish, but I can’t seem to stop.

I think I’m going to take my lunch break and go to Sports Authority to investigate exercise bikes. The reason I don’t exercise is because I’d have to leave the house to do it, I think. I’m perfectly happy with the idea of walking or riding a bike, if I can read or watch tv while I do it. I don’t know why, but to me “exercising” seems to equate with “mental inactivity”, and I just can’t handle the idea that I’m wasting that much of my time–especially given the fact that my job is a waste of at least six hours of my day, every day.

But if I can ride an exercise bike and watch Justice League at the same time, sign me up!

I’m off to my meeting with the graduate dean. Wish me luck!

Robin

Mythbusters tested a whole bunch of those vodka myths. According to an unofficial fan site, they found that:

-Vodka works as a mouthwash
-Vodka works as a footwash
-Vodka seems to remove smoke from clothing
-Vodka does not kill bees.
-Vodka does not remove urushiol oil from poison oak or ivy.
-Vodka seems to help with bandage removal.

So there you have it, the straight dope on vodka courtesy of the Mythbusters.

Oh, and Sean? Your mother dresses you funny. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good luck MsR! Knock 'em dead! Or maybe not. Killing off the dean might not be so good.

If the stain is caused by vodka, use the gin to make a dry martini or three. You’ll forget all about that pesky old stain. I should write a helpful household hints book.

kotick maybe I’ll ask ACBG to perform a turkey feather and antler bellydance for my birthday. I’m kinda gettin’ turned on by the idea. Me? Kinky?

So, who’s steppin’ up for Monday. We need this to be decided. Hmmm… ya know who it should be? It should be Bobbio cause he’s got gettin’ ready to move and movin’ tales to be told. What y’all think?

I thought it was Bobbio that volunteered for last week, then graciously bowed out when he saw that someone had already volunteered. I think then he said he’d this coming week’s MMP. Or, maybe I’m completely insane, and I’m remembering incorrectly. That has been known to happen.

I cannot believe it’s already Thursday! Where, or where, did my vacation go?

We can solve this right now.

All in favor of Bobbio kickin’ off next week’s MMP say “Aye”

AYE!!!

All those opposed say “Nay”

**:: CRICKETS :: **
The “Ayes” have it. Now let’s hope Bobbio wanders back in to see he’s up for Monday.

aha! it’s my turn to say:

All those in favor of **VunderBob ** hosting next week’s MMP say “aye”

AYE

All opposed?

:crickets:

I guess it’s Bobbio’s turn

I see that I [del]was shafted[/del] volunteered again. I’ll probably have lots of stories to tell from that corner of hell known as home remodeling.

You’ll have many “moving” tales

hmph, swampy, simul-post. well, my crickets were quieter! nyah!

I distinctly remember asking if Monday’s post was taken, but I sure as hell didn’t mutter anything about going for the next one. Furthermore, there will be glaciers you-know-where before I go walking in the park in the dark just so I have a good
[del]whopper[/del] OP to post…

See, I told all of you that I was probably remembering incorrectly! Are you going to lash me twenty times with a wet noodle, Bobbio?

Oh great, Taters get him all excited why don’t ya!

Why would I do that?

Taters just volunteered to accept all those antlers…

Hey, I wanted some of those! :stuck_out_tongue:

Which one have you read, Drae?

I am attempting a cakey thing to put at the bottom of some trifle, which will use up some of the 1000000000000000 pounds of strawberries that Quasi-Daughter bought because she can’t resist small children running produce stands. The cake would be surer of success if I had measured anything. I’m going to tear it up and soak it in strawberries and custard and whipped cream, and anything with those ingredients can’t be bad, right?
Yay for Bob bravely volunteering!

And here I was, just sure those vodka tips were a joke! You’d be drunk as a Russki just walking around the house, sniffing the fruits of your labors.

Regarding books, if someone’s really passionate about their favorite book, I’ll usually read it, just to see what gets someone so excited. I’ve found that different books, over the course of my life, have made me extremely passionate about them, and then later, when I re-read … meh. I have read Seven Storey Mountain and several others by Thomas Merton, though, and even seen his grave! He’s buried at Gethsamani, near Bardstown, Ky., which is where he did most of his writing as a monk and priest (as I’m sure you know, Lissla).

Just 'cause we’re on the subject, here’s a few of my all-time favs, in no particular order … (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil you already know about)

Lonesome Dove
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Executioner’s Song
The World According to Garp
Cold Mountain
Corelli’s Mandolin
Angela’s Ashes

I read Pride and Prejudice in high school.

So, the trip to Sports Authority was a bust. I don’t know if they just don’t have enough salespeople or if nobody wants to help a fat girl who couldn’t possibly really want to buy an exercise bike, but I’m annoyed. I can’t go to frickin’ Best Buy without three people asking me if I need help, but I can wander around the fitness section for twenty minutes without anybody bothering me. I would have sought somebody out if I had even seen a single salesperson. But alas, my lunch break is not long enough to wait around for retail employees to come off break or wherever they all were.
