Lola’s doesn’t have food. It’s fun, but little sitting room.
Instead of a tranny bar, take them to JR’s. Then when they get drunk, sent them across the street to either the Mining Company or Pacific Street. Be sure to get a picture of them coming out [pun intended]; it’s good for blackmail.
Try heading to the Rice Village. I know parking is limited, but Baker Street Pub just opened. It is in that group of stores so you can use the parking gagage [free]. The back door of Baker Street Pub opens into the garage or you can walk around to the front door. It has good pub food and good beer selection and a full bar.
Two Rows Brewery is on the second floor at the other end of the garage. The food’s OK.
You’re not supposed to park in the garage and go across the street, but directly across the street [Morningside] from Baker Street Pub is the new Griff’s. It’s a lot bigger than his original one. I haven’t eaten at the new one, so I can’t comment on their food.
I’d thought about the Gingerman in my initial scan of places (I’ve spent many a three-eyed night in there), but I thought it might be difficult to secure enough common indoor seating for 10+ of us. So I didn’t initially mention it.
I did check out what I’ll now designate (before this becomes a “let’s send beatle to a new bar every night” thread) as our official HouDope site for Saturday, January 27th, 2001 @ 6:00 PM:
Once again, starfish* has set the venue without appearing to commit to joining our merry band. Baker Street is essentially the same deal as The Ale House, although newer and smaller (third wave of pubs) with a kitchen (pub fare) that stays open until midnight. rob, this bar’s front door is literally about 40 yards from that of The Gingerman so, if after we feel like we’ve given the stragglers enough time we all feel like it, we can easily readjourn there (Note This, Potential Stragglers).
We still need to deal with the upcoming weekend (Sunday, January 21st, 2001, currently set for meeting at Floyd’s Cajun Kitchen). The weather so far doesn’t look right for that place. Suggestions?
*starfish, you appear to have been around this town a bit; even if you won’t join us (and I hope you will), can you offer us your editorial comments as regards possibly setting the Marquis II (on Bissonett) as a replacement for Floyd’s as the Sunday afternoon gathering spot? Thanks in advance.
Mr Bear; You hotel should be OK. I suggested places near to the original place [Mucky Duck]. It is still between Shepherd and Kirby, but on the other side of US 59, maybe 5 minutes further away.
Beatle; I never stopped in the Marquis so I can’t tell you about it, not even if they have food. For your 2PM timeframe, you could go to Sams Boat/Place on Richmond; its just around the corner from Floyds/Woodrows which you planned on going to. Sams gets busy later, but even in good weather, if you get there before 3PM you can grab enough tables. Since Sams moved the Boat and Place together, you have two indoors to choose from, plus they keep a heated tent over one of the decks. You can order from either menu so both seafood and TexMex; both are good.
rob; One reason I suggested Baker Street Pub and Griffs is that they are new so it should be easy to get tables. After you get tired of sitting/eating, get everyone to try Gingerman, I agree it is a nice place, and the others. Have a HouDope Pub Crawl without having to move your cars.
Well I checked out Shakespeare’s with their bartender and he said they don’t do food. Origato (and your very welcome, Origato-san :)), this is but one of manny Dopefests (16th doper meeting for me in less than 2 years), so I imagine we can possibly conjure up a Shakespeare’s meeting at some point. cooldude, yeah, yeah, Lola’s. Perhaps we can tag it along on the end of the Doper Pub Crawl? starfish is right about seating (none - and the only “food” I’ve ever seen available there was pharmaceutical).
So, with time for change dwindling, our agenda becomes set:
Roll call!
Frankly, it looks like the 27th will be well attended and the 21st might be a bit sparse (hey Ayesha, we got walls!), but if you’ll show, I’ll be there (look forward to seeing you, Shanin and Sealemon).
If you are on this list and aren’t coming, speak now please. If you aren’t and are coming, same goes. I’ll make one thingy ( I just love to say thingy) per person. I’ll bring them to both meetings, anyone who doesn’t show on the 21st will get theirs on the 27th.
It looks like I will be able to make the Saturday gig. I’ve been down with a nasty chest cold all week, and was not sure I’d be up to it, and I’m sure you’d rather I not infect anyone else, too. But things are looking up! I may even go to work tomorrow.
It looks almost a sure thing for me on the 27th. 60-40 chance that my wife will come along!
Aye, we’ll just have to flirt when she’s distracted by Beatle.
