Looks like the midwest is getting particularly hard-hit (Ohio also appears to be going to $4.99), apparently a double-whammy from a refinery issue. If that sticks, it will mean a whopping $1.10 increase in just 3 days; we didn’t see insanity like that during COVID, note.
Suburban Chicago (Cook County) has been fairly stable at around $4.49 for regular for the past few weeks, but I imagine it will be going up soon, if it hasn’t already (I haven’t looked at it since Monday).
3.999 for 85 octane today. Strangely, no trump stickers pointing at the price saying “I did that!” like there were for Biden back in the day…
$4.25 in MT. It’s gone up quite a bit in the last few days.
Gas has been around $4.49 here in suburban Cook County IL for weeks, and about a dime cheaper in DuPage County (which has lower gas taxes, AIUI).
My wife was driving home from her sister’s last night, and went by a Thornton station – it’s an off-brand gas station/convenience store, which tends to be several cents lower than their competition, as a loss-leader. They were suddenly up to $4.99 for regular.
The cheap stuff, here in SF bay area, is just under $6.00. If you want detergent, you can wait in line at Costco or pay just over $6.00.
I don’t know how many Europeans have answered, but I’d just like to throw in that it’s about $7/gallon here. That’s with sales tax. Are the prices mentioned here including sales tax? As all you Americans know, gas prices hsave always been much higher in Europe. I can understand that you guys think that prices are outrageous.
Interestingly, there’s no shortage here and Swedens has increased exports of Jet Fuel, since there’s a gas surplus. No Sweden doesn’t produce crude, but we have a couple of really big refineries and Norway is next door. With global prices rising, the North Sea fields are profitable.
I drive so little these days that I barely pay attention to gas prices, but I did get an oil change yesterday. Something like $120 for basic synthetic – they also had fancier synthetics for a lot more. It wasn’t long ago that a basic oil and filter change would be about half that!
I’m the same, and I live in such a small city that a trip across town takes 15 to 20 minutes. Still, gas prices are shocking. I filled up at $1.85 a liter the other day.
Oil changes. Yeah, I get you. I’m almost at the point where I’ll do it myself. I know how, and four quarts of oil, plus filter, plus an hour of time, is going to be a lot less than the $120 or so that Mr. Lube charges.
From a quick look at price reports, right now gas prices seem to be averaging a little over $1.74 a liter around here (for USaians, that’s around CAD $6.59 per US gallon, and I believe the temporary lifting of federal excise taxes on gasoline is already in effect) It’s probably a little less at the discount station I usually go to. I hate to think how this is affecting those with long daily commutes, not to mention taxis, Uber drivers, and pretty much all delivery services. This has got to be inflationary!
FTR, “synthetic” motor oil is actually derived from crude, it’s just much more highly processed than normal motor oil, so it’s understandable that it would be affected by the price of crude.
As for doing it myself, no thanks! Not at my age! Even in my youth, I’d change the oil on my motorcycle, but never on a car.
US price-at-the-pump includes taxes, which are collected as an excise on the volume of fuel delivered as opposed to an individual-sale monetary value tax.
Yes that’s with taxes included. One of the reasons why there is a big difference across the country is that each state has their own gas taxes that vary greatly. Of course there are other factors like transportation costs.
.25 jump in two days. Over $5.00 and climbing.
For the entire 21 years I’ve owned my car, I’ve never paid $50 to fill the tank. I suspect that changes today, by at least $15. Will report back this afternoon.
The Costco price jumped 20 cents today. I haven’t been on the road to check other places (you can check your local Costco price on the app in case you didn’t know.) It’s now $4.09. It was $3.89 earlier today.
$3.99 in Wichita today. Was $3.29 on Monday. 70 cents in five days.
Unlike most purchases in the US, the price of gasoline includes sales tax. In addition, there are special taxes at both the state and federal level that fund roads. That state tax varies in different states.
In addition, California has some added requirements to reduce air pollution. Unique features of our climate and geography make those necessary. Not all refineries are set up to handle them so, it makes the gas more expensive.
Europeans don’t use REAL gas… Thats reserved for Americans. It’s exceptional there ![]()
Well, as I expected. Today was the day I busted $50 to fill my tank. The total was $62.00. It was $5.02/gallon where I fill up. The highest I saw was at a Chevron in Eugene: $5.49/gallon. The least expensive was $4.89.
It’s gonna suck for the foreseeable future.
Twenty-five miles south of San Jose, CA: $5.49 for regular. Our usual Costco is about twelve miles north of us, and almost always has the best price going, but gasbuddy says it’s selling for the $5.49 there as well.
