I’m not saying I could have done any better, but Jason Segel’s inability to memorize the Italian lines was kind of distracting. That scene started to feel like an SNL skit. It also made me wonder if Alyson Hannigan was wearing sunglasses for the exact same reason.
Is it a given that Barney and Robin actually get married? or is that up in the air? (I’ve missed more than a few episodes)
They’ve been dancing around it all season (well, last two seasons), and it’s really annoying. The constant “maybe Ted really is the one!” subplot is even worse. The final beat with Robin with her mother asking, “Is there anyone in your life that you can always count on, no matter what?” was vomit-inducing.
Agreed, Munch - I hated that they ended on that note.
My bet is this: When he meets the Mother, in fact, immediately after meeting her, Ted gives the locket to Barney, to be HIS wedding gift to Robin; thus becoming the tool by which the Universe declares that the Barney/Robin union is The Right Answer.
Either that, or Ted left it in the river, but Barney retrieved it; thus proving HE was the one who really loved Robin.
I think this show is infinitely more enjoyable if you pretend the name of it is “How I got over Robin and settled for your mother” and just assume that every single episode is going to revolve around Ted and Robin maybe ending up together.
The flash-forwards we’ve seen this season pretty much confirm it.
Plus cancelling the Stinson-Scherbatsky wedding would have a major negative effect on the mood of the final episodes. I don’t see that happening.
That’s true. They danced around it all last year, but the flash forward where they wake up in South America a year after the wedding and are clearly still happy and in love proves the wedding took place.
Not really, unless there were rings on their fingers.
Ha!
The name of the show. The entire show is to explain How I Met Your Mother. Not what happens after I met your mother…what events led up to it.
I don’t have a comment about if she dies or not, I’m just saying that stopping after we’ve met her really does make perfect sense. IMO, the only reason (well, one of the reasons) we’re getting glimpses of their future is to give this last season a ‘soft landing’. It would be a bit abrupt if she walked in during the last episode and that was it.
I’ll go against what most of you said and say that I thought this episode was one of their worst ever.
I still can’t get over the preposterous idea of Marshall being offered a judgeship. Could the writers have maybe found a more realistic reason to keep him in New York?
I don’t see what’s so “preposterous” about that. Presumably the appointment was to a low-level judicial seat. It’s plausible.
The point is that they’re still together. Whether they get married or not isn’t as important as whether or not they stay together. And a breakup was one of those dire hints that the show threw at us all last year.
But I just checked the video of the episode on CBS.com and they are wearing rings.
What’s more preposterous - that Marshall got offered one or that he’s turning it down?
edit to add:
That’s some solid directing - continuity-wise.
which episode had the flash-forward to Robin & Barney in South America that you all are referring to? I obviously missed it & would like to watch. thanks in advance
“Rally.” It was two episodes ago and is available on CBS.com
I haven’t kept up the past 2 seasons (maybe 3?) Is there still an outstanding bet from Slapbet?
I can’t believe the mother is dead. Who on earth would spend hours/days/years telling his kids about women he used to bone instead of celebrating their dead mother and all her wonderful qualities and how she loved her kids. That IS crazy.
There was a slap earlier this season, and I believe it was said at the time that there was one slap remaining, but I’ve lost track over the years.
I don’t really get your complaint. Just because some one dies doesn’t mean that ever after you can only tell their kids stories about their late parent. You’re still aloud to talk to them about other things.
Plus the dialog established the kids have already heard the mothers side of the story.
