taxi, the smallest Dopefest was the one where I was the only only there. To paraphrase P.J. O’Rourke, “a bachelor is a living , breathing Dopefest all by himself.”
bobbio, the house looks good. I’m glad Maddy likes it.
Welcome CityGirl! I hope you prevail against Officer Pottymouth.
Here are my pics for “MMP, then and now” High School Now
That heat you’ve all been complaining about today? Yeah. I’ve had those temperatures for over a month. Since I arrived in this melting swamphole of a city.
I had a boat once. About eight feet long, couple of paddles, good for noodlin’ around the local irrigation reservoir. Had to sell it, though. Couldn’t afford the payments.
Horribly hot weekend here on the High Plains. Temperature hit 109 Saturday and again on Sunday. Prairie fire southeast of town sent a plume of brown smoke into the sky, turned our world a yellowish color all afternoon. Burned 3,200 acres of pasture; stiff winds out of the south drove the fire eight miles north before they could get a firebreak plowed across the path. Irrigated hay is getting two cuttings this summer, when they usually get four. The six counties in this corner of the state has lost 50% of the dryland wheat; irrigated corn yield is going to be down 20 to 30% because the heat has stunted the plants.
Razorette and I planted 32 trees as windbreaks around the property this spring; heat has killed all but six of them. We can’t keep water on them, even with a drip irrigation system. We’re even using soaker hoses to keep the buffalo grass lawn alive. Ordinarily we shouldn’t have to water more than twice a summer; this year we’re watering weekly.
Some relief today – 92 is the predicted high, so I’m gonna’ finish the retaining wall in front of the house this afternoon while it’s cool. Supposed to be back above 105 tomorrow.
I dunno about global warming, but the warming in my neck of the woods is getting mighty tiresome.
fcm that was not boring at all! I love being out on the water, but other than wanting an aluminum skiff to run around in, setting crab pots and jigging for halibut, I do not want to own one. My bio-dad always had one, and being married to a fisherman and friends with a lot of skippers, I know how much time and money is spent keeping them going. That hole in the water in which to throw money in thing. At least as the working (as in commercial) boats go. However you have my best hopes in aquiring another boat, they are fun, and I’ll take a virtual three hour tour with you guys anytime!
Best wishes in getting your degree where and when you want BrattiAtti.
Mmmmm, grilled peaches herbs, that sounds really yummy!
The house demo sounds awful, swampy, the actual work part anyway. It’s cool that it will be a group home for developmentally disabled adults, I once worked as a counsellor in a group home like that, co-ed with residents with wildly varying disabilities and levels of functioning, and it was hands down the most rewarding job I have ever held. My heart hurt a little bit when you wrote about sawing off magnolia limbs, but I suppose it’s because I can’t grow them here and I miss them.
It’s okay bobbio, I am sure there will be plenty of opportunity to photograph the cotton fields. As a third generation displaced Southerner there are so many things Southern that I feel in my heart, and I wonder if I will ever see any of it first hand.
Sean I still have my axe handle from the village. It is a very handy weapon to brandish at intruders, and a good whack is an excellent deterrent without (necessarily) being lethal! I suggest you keep your eye on Bobbio during any future work parties!
I am right there with you picunurse and I won’t say anything. I quit having birthdays when my #1 daught turned 18 and the younger two figured out that I really wasn’t 18 anymore. I also agree that the contract had far too much fine print, and some bad things were thrown in there which I missed. I do not recall anything about gleaming metallic silver hair, and whatever happened to my tough girl I Am Woman strength and stamina??? Moving on, I so miss Sea Fair, especially the Pirates and the hydroplane races. Also Salty Sea Days in Everett, and back when Marysville was the strawberry capitol of Washington, the Straberry Festival. sigh I miss my home state.
Oh Drea, a baby is coming!!! I love babies, and our circle of friends all do the auntie/gramma thing as well. I am Gramma Wendy to the Dagster, son of my #1 daught’s best friend. I was allowed to watch his birth, now he is 16 months old, and a dollbaby. Keep us informed!
rigs I have a sil who has been on life support for going on two years. It’s so sad, but the in-laws can’t bring themselves to let her go. It’s so sad, but at the same time I just want to yell at them to LET HER GO!!!
So, Ellen, Miss Molly has rallied. It does happen, and it’s so difficult when the goodbye’s have been said and then the waiting begins. I only hope that she is still enjoying this world, and that when she’s ready to leave it will be quick and uneventfull.
Cuevo is a lovely flame tabby MBG with the cutest pink nose! I am so glad that he approves of the kittens, and yes, we are keeping all three. I am such a sucker for baby anything.
Uh, check my location, darlin’, that’s quite a commute for me! Upon further reading I see that twinkie caught it!
Ah Taters, so sorry about the spewage. It happens to me more frequently than anyone should have it happen, and you have my full empathy. Try to stay hydrated.
Citygirl852 that is a frightening tale. We have some local corruption going on here, with some pistol-pulling happy cops. I come from a family in law enforcment, and I hate to see bad cops. Good luck in fighting the ticket, and my fingers are crossed that your town will be one motorcycle cop short in the very near future.
Fuchsias prefer a dappled light and to be kept moderately moist taxi. Given those conditions they should do wonderfully for you. Aphids can be taken care of with a squirt bottle of soapy (dish washing detergent works well) and it doesn’t bother the plants at all. You can take starts off of fuchsias in the Fall, use rooting hormone, and then in the Spring you have clones from last year’s fuchsia as well!
Ugh about the weather, only we are, still, opposite of y’all. 51F and dropping, rain on the way. Chilly enough I had to close the windows. I am cold! And I messed up my messed up back, and the nerves on my right side are all pinched, along with muscle spasms and sciatic pain in my right hip/leg/foot…blech, today bites. So I am here, heating pad on the back, ibuprophen and muscle relaxers trying to work, it’s Monday, right? Figures.
My wildlife incident was the fox trotting down the side of the highway as we went to the airport to pick up the kittens. The kittens still think they have been shang hai’ed to some awful place, although a bit of salmon seems to be bringing them around.
Nothing else exciting going on here at the moment, except perhaps a bit of a snooze. Believe me everybody, I am sending you our chill with every wish in my body. We should all manage to average out at around 70F, whattaya say?
Oh, and fcm are you trying to tell us something about Ex by calling him a poppy head? I mean, with swampy’s crack den talk and all the garden talk, is Ex growing opium poppies? lol!
It’s too hot to turn the oven on in the house, or to stand over the stove. It’s WAY too hot to cook outside on the grill. I’m trying to enforce a tight pre-vacation budget here, so it would be wrong for me to order food from somewhere (seeing as we did that Saturday night). So I’ve just created a nre recipe. I’m calling it “everything in a crockpot.” I guess it could also be called, “clean the fridge stew,” but that sounds gross. It’s a cut-up eye round roast, sliced potatoes, fresh green beans, some mushrooms, red peppers, and whatever seasonings smelled like they wanted to go in there. I was going to use thai red curry, but as it turns out, I don’t have any. Of course, I just put it on, and they don’t call it a slow cooker for nuthin’. I think I’d better work out a back-up plan. Who wants pasta?
Oh, and hello to Sunrazor. Didn’t you say something about bringing fudge?
Okay. I’m back at the house now. Here’s the pun, as promised.
Between this weekend and today I have already written the puns for the entire week. This is a first for me. Occasionally I’ve known one a day in advance. I’ve never done this much ahead of time. What’s more, I have enough material in this line to continue for an entire month. Hope you all like boats. Sorry Ex.
And now - presenting “High School Me” 1973 as Ruth in the Pirates of Penzance 1975 as Veta Louise in Harvey 1977 to the right of flute player (who, by the way, is The AssHat from a previous MMP - this is where we met) as part of the ensemble in Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris
kaiwik, I don’t envy you. It’s four million degrees here and we have no AC and there are two thoughts in my head: “thank god it’s not cold” and “thank god we have no AC, because if we did it would be cold.” Also, what does your name mean/where does it come from? I’ve always been curious about that. Swampy, I hate it when stuff like that happens. And though it sucks for the rest of you, good for the person who resigned! I wish I had the balls to do that.
Ashes… thanks. now I’ll NEVER be able to eat mashed taters again. (alhough mashed cauliflower is better anyway.)
SCL, color me jealous! I love circuses. I even like clowns. Don’t tell anyone. It’s not cool to like clowns.
So, due to a lack of communication in my workplace, I was told I had to work tonight and then, when I got there, they told me I wasn’t supposed to work because they didn’t expect it to be busy. So I got to turn around and walk home. I hate it when strangers offer me rides and I really want a ride… I won’t take a ride from a stranger because that would be idiotic of me, but then I have only myself to blame once I start thinking about how miserable I am because it’s too hot and my house is too far. But I made it anyway and I’m glad I don’t have to work.
also, my sister gets to move into my room. I have to move out. I get no say in the matter. This is, in my opinion, rather unfair. But whatever. I only have to live here two more years.
I must say I am a little hesitant about posting these because once before I linked to my family pics, and then I found out on the snark boards that they were making fun of my family! I have no problem if they make fun of me, but not my family, dudes. Oh well.
And for a time frame, I was born in 1975, so the pictures range from about 1982 to the last one at 1992.
Dinner time! I made chicken burritos and corn. I marinated the chicken in chipotle sauce and Cuervo(N.O.C.). I’m now sipping on a Pyramid hefeweizen and looking forward to a night of air conditioned surfing and maybe a movie.
rosie you were a looker and an actress in high school? Too bad I was only five.
meeks, cool pics. If idiots are making fun of you, it’s because they never had a cool family or a puppy.
Tel, look on the bright side. Monday ends in 4 hours.
Clearly, this is not a boring MMP, as we are already on page three.
Oh, and Sunrazor, I’ve let go of your ear now. Hope it didn’t hurt too much. You’re coming back on a regular basis, right?
And welcome, BrattiAtti and citygirl; hi Annie and lieu!
Hope you win, citygirl.
I think Ex secretly loves boats and is quite cheerful.
Sorry about the sad chicken, Ashes. When you find a fridge, can you just go ahead and buy two and send me one? I’m living with the one that came with the house. It’s sort of a miracle that it’s frost-free, cuz I could swear the thing was built in about 1950. Oh…and what’s the admission fee at Target today? I was thinking of going there.
Drae - the shades sound very nice… pictures? And yay for your impending great-auntness!
rigs, when do you leave for school again? You’ll be giving us daily updates, right?
I know I’ve missed someone/something important, but geeeeeez we’re on page three already! So: hugs to everyone who needs 'em…
It was 100 Merrkun degrees outside when I left work at 5:00 p.m. Went and had my ears lowered (can girls have their ears lowered?) in order to avoid looking like a mop. I’ve had a couple of quesadillas with avocado and salsa and am considering the next course. Should really be a fruit or vegetable, but ice cream sounds more appealing.
Off in search of food.
And on preview - 4 million new posts - I like all the pics (had to stop and look at them, of course). I’ll be back eventually with pics of my own (I think I need to scan some older ones…).
