I’m hoping that someone with a little spare time will run the numbers on this thread. I always find this kind of survey curious because inevitably the number of partners that men claim will often be one-and-a-half to 3 times greater than the number of partners that women claim. The gay sex thing can seriously skew the averages, but even so it always seems that men claim far more partners than women.

Using Anaamika’s stats (when I’m even more bored I’ll double-check):

Yeah, the gay guys averaging 275 partners apiece is pretty eye-popping. And I’m with you here; the idea of hundreds of largely anonymous partners sounds really appealing until I realize that all the partners are other dudes. Therein lies the rub. And it ain’t the kind of rub I’m into, unfortunately. 
OK - so it looks like straight women average about 19 partners each and straight men average about 76. That’s a difference of 4 times the number of partners that men have vs. women. You can see why I’m skeptical of these surveys.

This thread confirms my belief that I have historically been severely disadvantaged in social communications. I say ‘historically’ because things have gotten better.
I used to think that women weren’t interested in me because I was ugly and unattractive, but even during those days, there were a few glorious exceptions. Which occurred when I was happy and doing something I liked in an environment where I was accepted (namely, electronics school, then, later, art school).
I now think that my looks are sufficinetly inoffensive to be irrelevant; it’s social skills and confidence that count. I am glad to say that these can be learned.

There’s another possible explanation for this phenomenon: the fact that it’s easier for the average girl to get some than the average guy. The following speculation is based on heterosexuals, BTW. I would guess that 30 year old male virgins are more common than 30 year old female virgins. My guess is that a sampling of men would turn up a few men with LOTS of partners, some men with a few partners, and a good number of men with none. A similarly sized sampling of women would find fewer women with no partners.

Best? Probably the fuckbuddy from college who happened to be a professor. We met in a bar one night and she took me home, rocked my world, made me breakfast then drove me back to my apartment. She was the best in terms of coolness factor- every time, I would think to myself “I’m banging a university professor, how cool is that?!?!” And the fact that she was very uninhibited- public sex, skinnydipping, flashing me in public, that type of thing.
