How to embed pictures from imgur

Help! For years I’ve been able to do this nicely, but recent SW changes here and/or in imgur have changed things.

Example: I have 2 pictures in an imgur post and I want to show them. I tried it and got two separate URLs from imgur, but it’s not showing the images. Instead, either the first image is repeated or only the URL text is displayed. How do I do this?

To see the second image that I want you have to select the URL and scroll down to it, which of course is not desirable.

I’m almost always using an iPhone, BTW.

Any help?

I did. The info is not there.

The imgur app, at least on Android, changed a few weeks ago and now when you try to grab a link to an image, you get some wonky text and a link to the album all mangled together.

Ah, sorry.

Scroll down to the second image and copy its image location, or open it in a new tab and then copy the URL. Make sure it ends in jpeg or png or some other image extension and isn’t just a web page. Put it on its own line:

https://i.imgur.com/RGztruA.jpeg

I suspect this is going to be an issue with the imgur app, not the imgur website or discourse.

I think you can just uninstall the app?

(Not trying to be snarky. Many companies want you to use the app so they can limit what you can do. A web browser, even on the phone, gives you more control.)

In Imgur’s case, they make money from albums because they can show ads. When you link directly to an image, you use their bandwidth and they get nothing. They’re not incentived to make it easy for you.

Hopefully they understand that if they make it difficult or impossible to hotlink images, they’re going to end up in the same position as photobucket. Remember photobucket?

I actually tried those things, both in the app and in a safari browser window. No joy.

Thanks for the URL, but I’m still wondering how you got that?

I wanted my post to be this (using your URL).

But, for the first picture the URL I used isn’t truly what I want to use. I used \ The Yankees’ haircut rule - Album on Imgur , (trying to get it, but failing), but I also want the URL ending in jpeg or other picture format

https://imgur .com/ gallery/ yankees-haircut-rule-DuNwJq5#vYRrdCy

(Spaces inserted to break it)

So really I’m having trouble getting the true URL with picture file extension for both photos

I sure do. I get several emails a month reminding me what fuck-ups they are.

You can always mouse over the image, right click, and select “Copy Image Address”. This is on Chrome.

That gives you https ://i.imgur.com/vYRrdCy.jpeg and https ://i.imgur.com/RGztruA.jpeg (spaces added to break the link.

The app is your problem. Access Imgur in your browser. If you have to disable or uninstall the app, do that. If you have a real computer, yes even a Mac, all this is trivial. It’s the app and the phone that are fighting you.

When I’m scrolling through imgur with the app and want to copy an image from one post to use it in the comments of another, I end up saving them as favorites until I can get to a computer to grab the link.

The fact that you can’t even easily do this within the app makes me think it’s a bug that’ll be fixed in the next few weeks.

Short version: The inability to hot-link is a feature, not a bug, in their app. From their POV.

Cmprehensive version:

Yeah the bypassing of the ads on imgur, I think that’s it.

So I’ve been trying that. I do have a laptop, Windows PC, but I use my phone more frequently.

I was able to extract jpeg URLs this way. It’s clunky but I think it works. We’ll see what displays.

  1. Open the post in the imgur app.

  2. For each picture, select it and, using the forward arrow (or “share” icon but it doesn’t have a name), open it in the Chrome app.

  3. Now in Chrome (still on the iPhone), you have the album. Select the desired photo, use the forward arrow (“share”) and select to open it in a new Chrome tab.

  4. Copy its URL and replace the trailing part with .jpeg.

Example: https:// i.imgur. com/RGztruA_d.webp ?maxwidth=760&fidelity=grand

(broken with spaces)

Replace the .webp? and all after it with .jpeg.

Results:

This is what I wanted, except for the sizing of the first picture.

Definitely a clunky process!

Ah, sorry, in mobile Safari, you tap and hold on the second image and then choose “Copy”. But you’re not done yet. First you have to open a new tab and then paste it into the URL bar. That should give you a URL like https://i.imgur.com/RGztruA.jpeg. But you’re STILL not done. Then you have to select all (the same URL you JUST pasted) and copy THAT instead. THEN you can paste that URL into the SDMB.

The hoops are necessary because of our prohibition on direct image posting. When you first copy the image, Safari copies both the image itself AND its URL. It will behave differently depending on what you paste it into subsequently. If you paste that first copy directly into the SDMB, it’ll try to paste the image (and fail because we don’t allow them). So you have to first paste it into the URL bar to make it plaintext, and then copy that and paste it into the SDMB.

What a hassle, right?!

PS that’s the same guy? He looks radically different with the haircut.

The long hair version looks like AI to me.
