wanders in to give Sampiro a big hug I’m right behind you, mate. All the way.
A possible suggestion: Why not just write up your mini-rants in order, with less rant flavor and three or four cites a-piece, and simply copy/paste or link to them whenever necessary? I mean, “Homosexuality is unnatural!” “That’s #2. Here, read this and try again.” isn’t that much extra work. Plus, you will be creating a valuable resource for the rest of us.
That’s a whole other rant, but the short version is Yes. He lives in Cottondale (how appropriate- I guess Verandaville and Mint Julep Town were all full up) and his dumbass proposal would of course affect my job (particularly since I work in the library). Now, while I don’t have any great fear that even in Talabama this would pass- I don’ t even think Allen does, I think it’s strictly a drumming up of support among the Fundies- here’s what infuriates me: the faculty of the state universities have been asked (not in writing but in verbal communicades- no written records, in other words) not to write editorials, speak to the press or in any way denounce him or his position because “He’s one of the best friends of higher education in the state legislature”, meaning that he’s always voted for funding increases to state colleges and universities. “Oh we’re against what he’s saying, but let’s not piss him off” is the jist of the policy, which is why you haven’t heard outrage from the state higher education (the officials of which are mostly not even from Alabama).
To me this is so many bales of chicken shit. Yes, I appreciate that he’s voted for education raises and that schools need money, but now he’s a liability and needs to be handed his hat and told thanks and b’bye. It’s rather like the situation of megamillionaire realtor/businessman Bobby Lowder who has gotten zillions of dollars for Auburn U. (and their football team) but wrecked the university in the process (he even tried to silence the student paper when it denounced him). At some point you have to ask yourself “what is this money costing us?” and Allen reached that point going about 90 mph. (Many professors totally ignored the gag request, but the most embarassing and infuriating thing to me was this delicious irony: our library, like most libraries, erected a display for Banned Book Week and was told by the dean [acting on orders from higher up] to take it down as “it might anger public officials”.)
DH, I, and our 3 mutts will be joining you!
Well, you aren’t facing it alone. (And to be quite honest, most of these people are, as andygirl once put it, “like those little yip dogs you just want to punt to see if they make any noise other than that keening bark.”)
So then he bought them. So much for integrity or pride or honesty. How much does self respect go for on the open market these days? What’s a decent price quote for selling out honesty? Just try not to choke if any of them try talking about
- honor
- integrity
- decency
- courage
- pride
- dignity
- any other thing that comes out of their mouths.
Good for the professors who refused to fall in line.
Refresh my memory-which one is Gerald Allen? Is he the one who wants to ban any book that remotely mentions homosexuality from public libraries? I can’t keep my homophobes straight anymore.
I thought this was gonna be about how tiresome gay whining has become. Welcome to the fucking real world. Get use to it, it hasn’t significantly changed in 2005 years and ain’t likely to because of your post.
And the peanut gallery has spoken.
Shouldn’t that be pea-brained gallery?
Don’t mind him, me trouts. He’s just upset because this same ‘whining’ has been responsible for the gains we’ve eked out throughout the civilized world. People tend to get tetchy when they’re left without a point.
Pea brained or not, I can recognize reality. Minorities get dumped on. Whining about it won’t change anything. Wringing one’s hands and “feeling each other’s pain” may be fun but it’s rather pointless.
And gays, gimme a fucking break. It’s not like they have to use separate water fountains or something.
And when it gets to that point?
What then?
Yeah! They’ve been able to have consensual, private sex without the threat of fines and jail time for nearly TWO YEARS now! They should really just be glad it’s not legal to kill them and keep quiet.
Nah, we just get banned from hospital sick-rooms of longtime lovers, stereotyped constantly as silly promiscuants and then forbidden to form relationships that are legally recognized, risk being beaten or murdered if we hold hands with a loved one at a movie theater, generally made to feel like worthless embarassments by our families, forced to endure uninformed calumny on an hourly basis, told by the president we’re so dangerous that the Constitution needs to be amended to protect society from us because we’re seeking the same rights the SCotUS afforded the Manson murderers, not just ignored but usually villified by our elected officials who then say “not my fault” when violence against us rises, and risk losing our jobs if we are honest at work. Or to put it more in terms you can understand Blackbirdxx, Fuck you and the mother you rode in on.
>>Nah, we just get banned from hospital sick-rooms of longtime lovers, stereotyped constantly as silly promiscuants and then forbidden to form relationships that are legally recognized…<<
I never said you didn’t, in fact I did say you get dumped on. But then you gotta start exaggerating. Society offerred civil unions but no, gays gotta insist on marriage. If you get it more power to you, but quit exaggerating the degree of your persecution. There’s a lot more folks out there in the world that have it a lot worse than homosexuals in America. Whiney fuckers.
Do you have a point?
Beyond the one on top of your head?
Let me follow your line of reasoning here. It is apparently illegitimate to complain about mistreatment if there are people worse off than you.
Theoretically, this would mean that only one person in the world would be entitled to complain about mistreatment, since everyone else would have at least one person who was worse off than they are.
This seems somewhat unproductive, considering, as I said, that what gains we’ve made have been entirely the result of our ‘whining.’ But please, don’t trouble yourself to have a point.
