I am not gay but I can easily see what a damned liability it is to have that sexual orientation. I live in Massachusetts - yeah we have legal gay marriage here. Has it destroyed the moral fibre of the state, the country, the world? Hell no. Some people are much too touchy on that subject though.

As others have said, society didn’t offer civil unions; in fact, in some states civil unions have been explicitly made illegal. Nothing Sampiro has said is an exaggeration. I’m a straight woman who’s rather thoroughly and sappily in love with a man who is just as thoroughly and sappily in love with me. I can kiss him good-bye in public, bring him to my church, talk about him at work, and induce saccharine poisoning in waiters at restaurants because we’re so busy holding hands and looking in each others’ eyes that we haven’t noticed we’ve been there for two hours, (yes, we do make up for it with the tip) and no one’s going to say anything except, “Aww! How cute!” and maybe, “So, you two going to get married?” If Sampiro were to try that with someone he loved, he’d be accused of being disgusting, immoral, lewd and God knows what else. Rather than being encouraged to marry, he’s told that his desire to marry destroys the institution of marriage itself.
Then again, perhaps women shouldn’t have complained when our career options were pretty much limited to secretary, teacher, or nurse and any woman who wasn’t married by 25 or 30 was a pitiful, hopeless old maid. :rolleyes: I assume you’ve got a life which suits you. But why was that sarcastic? They DO have the same rights as marriage. Marriage has a vaguely religous overtone, civil union does not.
If I ever felt the need (as a straight woman) to become legaly joined to someone, I would definitely use the civil union option. No god stuff…same desire to be recognised as a couple and celebrate that fact with friends.
I am very happy civil unions are now an option in NZ.
