Faye is having sex with a giant hot robot girl who does erotic poses for her. Faye is too smart to fuck that situation up.
Also, this strip takes place in Northampton, Massachusetts, home of Smith College. There will be NO transphobia here.

Yeah, Faye being mad at Bubbles would be too easily read as “You should have told me that Claire was trans” which opens the question of why is it Faye’s business. Versus Faye just having an attitude of “Hey, it’s her prerogative to tell who she wants in confidence.”
It’s got nothing to do with Claire being trans. It has to do with Bubbles not sharing information with Faye. Note that Faye almost immediately asked Claire if she could tell Bubbles. Not because it’s gossipy, but because sharing with your SO is something couples do. So I think she was surprised that Bubbles already knew, and apparently made no effort to share it with her.
Yeah, a big part of Claire’s role in the strip seems to be a sort of, “How to be cool about your friend being trans,” primer. Faye freaking out because her gf knew Claire was trans and didn’t tell her would cut directly against that.
Faye asked, because Jeph’s trying to model proper etiquette for this situation. Outing someone as trans without their permission - even to your SO - makes you a jerk. Having Faye freak out over this would communicate that Claire being trans is a Big Deal that people need to know about. Faye being cool about it communicates that it’s not a big deal, and that it’s information that nobody else needs or is entitled to know. Ideally, learning that Claire is trans should be about as significant as learning she’s had an appendectomy, and Jeph’s goal with Claire seems to be about putting her in the most ideal situation possible, at least vis-a-vis her gender identity. Which is nice, because usually when you have a trans character in a story, the story is about that person being trans. I think Jeph has a conscious goal here to have a trans character where her being trans is largely incidental to the plot, just because that’s not something you see very often.
I agree with this. I understand how daunting and how much of a time sink it is to (re)read comics from the beginning but I enjoy it.
S*P is brutal in the beginning compared to now. I don’t know if Randy can’t think up mean things to say now, wants the reader to fill it in, or is conveying that they have softened because they used to be brutal to each other. In language and in deed.
On topic, good points on Roko. At the least, looking back and thinking about it, she should have known more. Or how she thought of or treated ex felons (didn’t she do this already and it’s why she quit?) and realize how tough it is.
And really good point on how it’s not about Martin, Faye, Dora, Hannalore, and Pintsize anymore. I wonder if he ran out of storylines or ideas for them? Or he got this idea and is exploring it? It’s tough because I like a few of the new characters, like Bubbles, Sam, and Martin’s mom, but not all. Still it keeps amusing me so I will keep reading it.
If it’s got nothing to do with Claire being trans, exactly what is the information that Bubbles didn’t share with Faye? How on earth can you say that “not sharing information” has nothing to do with said “information”? It’s explicitly about the information, and that information is “Claire is trans”.
Healthy couples are people that have their own lives and interests, and can share a confidence with a friend or not attempt to share every minor piece of information that they found out before they were even in a relationship. And yes, talking about someone else’s medical procedures is very much engaging in gossip.
To put it in perspective, If I was talking to a partner and said ‘heh, I remember we conned so much ice cream out of sympathetic adults back in 1983 when Joey had his tonsils removed’ and they got angry at me for not revealing that I knew that Joey had his tonsils removed, I’d think they were nuts.
Look, I’m not saying Faye would be right to be upset that Bubbles didn’t tell her. But like MrDibble, I think it’s at least possible that’s going to come up in the next few weeks. Else why have Faye ask if she could tell Bubbles at all?
Regardless, we’ll see whether or not that’s what happens.
Being trans isn’t a medical procedure. It may or may not lead to medical stuff, but isn’t a requirement.
I am at a loss as to why people think that ‘trust issues’ are a reason somebody might be upset with their partner NOT being indiscreet with somebody else’s potentially sensitive information.
And Faye asked if it was OK to share the information, indicating she knows this is something that shouldn’t be shared willy nilly.
But also indicating that she wants to share the information with Bubbles. For no discernable reason, other than that they are a couple who share information. So why is it so inconceivable for her to wonder why Bubbles didn’t share the information with her?
It is, again, somebody else’s potentially sensitive information. Which she, by asking, acknowledges that nobody has a right to know without Claire’s express permission.
That this is something she feels that Bubs might like to know is not the same thing as it being something that she needs to know to the point it would be a betrayal of trust not to share.
Faye asked, because Jeph’s trying to model proper etiquette for this situation. Outing someone as trans without their permission - even to your SO - makes you a jerk.
Because while Faye can be an asshole, she’s never been that kind of asshole. Her freaking out at Bubbles over not sharing this indicates that she thinks this is important information that should have been shared with her. Her thinking this is important information that should have been shared with her indicates that she’s got issues around transexuality, and Faye having issues with transexuality does not at all fit with how she’s been portrayed in the comic up to this point.
I suspect that the closest we’ll come to this story line is Bubbles worrying that she screwed up by not telling Faye, and Faye reassuring her that she did not behave inappropriately.
Hell, Claire’s brother has a fucking Robot Hand, and hardly anyone comments on it.
Except for possibly my favorite QC ever, at the party at Emily’s parents’ house, where Marigold says “So how come you got a robot hand?” And Claire says “He masturbated so much his hand withered and fell off!!!. And there’s a dead silence when everyone turns around and stares, and Marigold says “Wait, wouldn’t that have made the hand stronger?”
Any of the major characters having issues with transgender people was rather explicitly ruled out in this comic. I think it’s pretty clearly an authorial comment on the topic even though it’s drawn by a guest artist.

I don’t think there’d be any transphobia from Faye. I’m literally just talking about an argument about sharing information, the nature of the information is irrelevant.
Naah. That information could just as easily be anything.
Note Faye’s first question. I bet her big issue isn’t going to be “why didn’t you tell me?”, it’s going to be “why didn’t you ask if you could tell me?”. If he do go that route, it’d explicitly be about the relationship dynamic itself, not the stimulus.
I’ma stop you there with an important question:
Which QC wecomic have you been reading?
Not really. I’ve seen people freak out over the most inconsequential stuff. Relationships aren’t about logic.
I hope so, believe me. It’s not a storyline I actually want. But that “Huh” sounded … off to me.
A noble goal, and too bad he’s trying it with Claire who is so amazingly boring that being trans is literally the only half-interesting thing about her.
