That was (pardon the expression) a dick move on Faye’s part. They’ve been making out on the couch. Faye asks to spend the night and knows that Angus takes that to mean they’re going to get it on. She strips to her underwear and lets Angus get at least partly naked (he removed his shirt, and possibly everything else) before telling him that his earlier interpretation is all wrong?
If I was Angus I’d be a bit pissed, although I think he reacted appropriately. I do wonder if he brought up the pimple out of frustration.
Maybe Jeph just thinks that’s how it’s supposed to go. Dora did something similar to Martin back in comic 604. At least that time both Dora and Martin were still clothed and Martin hadn’t been lead to believe he was getting laid beforehand.
Why is that a dick move? It’d be a dick move if Faye said “you want to do what?!?” Of course she knows he thought they were having sex - the strip prior makes that abundantly clear. But to want to sleep with, but not fuck, someone isn’t a big deal.
Now being pissed about it - that would be a dick move.
Because Faye was the one who put the idea that there was going to be sex in Angus’s head. Notice how when she first mentions the time Angus asks if she is heading out? He doesn’t suggest that she hop into bed with him. Check out his expression when Faye says she was thinking about spending the night. He’s suprised. It’s not like Angus is pressuring Faye into having sex and she starts giving in. He doesn’t get the idea that they might do more than make out on the couch until she starts it.
This isn’t some wacky miscommunication joke either. Faye knows exactly what Angus is thinking. And she goes along with it right up to removing clothing and getting into bed. Only then does she think to tell Angus he’s got the wrong idea.
If you’re with someone and you know they believe that the two of you are going to have sex when you know that won’t happen, you don’t feel there’s any obligation to tell them? You wouldn’t feel the least bit cheated if your SO strung you along and then said goodnight?
It’s not that Faye didn’t sleep with Angus that bothers me. Of course she doesn’t have to do that. It’s Faye letting Angus go on thinking she was going to that does.
Getting that idea is certainly natural. But in no way is it a sure thing. And what do you expect Faye to do - go to bed with her clothes on? She didn’t completely strip down and start rubbing herself on him - she got into comfortable sleeping attire and said she wasn’t comfortable banging him tonight. There’s nothing sinister there - you’re digging entirely too deep to be offended by her actions.
Faye DID tell him - AND she didn’t say goodnight! She’s still in his bed, being romantically and physically close and intimate with him. Sorry - but I’m a dude and I don’t see anything at all here to get worked up about.
Edit: Not only that, but Angus didn’t even give Faye a chance to “declare her intentions” - he threw her aside to run and check to see if he had condoms. Nope - nothing to see here.
I think I’m going to give up and just agree to disagree with you. I’m apparently not explaining myself and I’m unsure how to do it better. So one last try.
Angus getting the wrong idea wasn’t what bothered me. I’m completely fine with everything that occured in #1853. I’m also completely fine with Faye only wanting to share a bed and not have sex, which is how #1854 ends. It’s what occured after #1853 ends and the through the first panel of #1854.
When Angus gets the wrong idea he runs to his room. Faye calls him on this. Now they are both standing, dressed, in the hallway. I suppose you can argue that after #1853 ends Angus immediately pulls Faye into his room and sheds his clothes like he’s about to dive into a lake to save a drowning toddler before hopping into bed and waiting for Faye to join him. Faye’s unable to stop this because Angus is just that fast and/or she’s in shock at his speed.
Faye could certainly tell him now that he’s got the wrong idea. She doesn’t. She instead takes this opportunity to remove her pants. See how that only reinforces Angus’s belief? She then gets on the bed (although not under the covers next to Angus) which again continues to reinforce Angus’s belief. Now she decides to correct him about what she was hoping to do.
So even if there is no time between Angus mistaking her intent and his leaping (partially) naked into bed, there is time for her to tell him before removing her own clothes and getting in bed with him.
I don’t think Angus got the wrong idea at all. If he had, Faye would have corrected him when he checked for condoms. I think Faye thought she was ready to have sex, but got cold feet.
Yup. And it’s better that she realized that before they got naked, or before they started going at it, or especially after they finished. (“Hey, I don’t think I was really OK with having sex yet; maybe we should cool off this relationship for a while.” “…”)
The situations are similar. Faye and Dora are both outwardly confidant, slightly damaged women, and Martin and Angus are both nice, non-threatening guys, which was a big part of the appeal for the women in question.
Getting a bit ahead of themselves, getting a bit freaked out, then backing off, (and by happy coincidence, giving their respective suitors a final niceness pop quiz) seems in character for both.
There are two possible interpretations. Either A, Faye deliberately wound him up, then backed off to prove to herself she was in charge, OR B got a bit past her comfort zone and took a couple of minutes to spit out that she wanted to wait a bit longer. Which seems more likely?
Of course, this is Faye we’re talking about, who’s relationship with Marten for about 400 strips consisted almost entirely of interpretation A, so perhaps I shouldn’t have brought it up. But still, the very worst interpretation is a slight backslide brought on by nerves.

I mean, not to say that Faye isn’t kind of a jerk. But she’s a sympathetic jerk . . .
The art for Faye seems amazingly inconsistent lately. Sometimes (like in today’s strip) she seems almost Dora thin and her features seem sharp. Other times, she’s extremely curvy.
In fact, the art for most of the characters seems to be converging on a Dora-like average.
It’s the jackets, I think. The more complected the clothes are, the more standardized the builds get.
So Renee is presumably the horrible ex that Angus mentioned after his long absence. Who’s exactly like Faye. Not very long after Mz. Reed pointed out that Faye+Marten would make a terrible couple.
Though if Bizzaro Marten is tough (he’s got action-hero scars) and assertive, shouldn’t Bizzaro Faye be friendly and pleasant to customers?
Unless Renee is not Bizzaro Faye, but actually Bizzaro Raven!

Though Steeve had been gone so long at that point, I’d first assumed that Bizzaro Steve was Bizzaro Tai.
I am really tired of dudes in QC being beaten up by chicks. OK, previously it’s usually been Faye, who has some established anger issues. But come on: Getting slapped across the face in a bar just because you stared at a girl for a few seconds too long? That’s ridiculous. Enough already.
Huh. I totally missed the slap mark - I thought the scowl alone was reason enough for the dialogue in the last frame. But yeah, Jacques does that all the time.
