IIRC time compression is extreme in this webcomic. Years of our time seem to relate variously to weeks or maybe months of strip time. So slackers staying at jobs for years and years of our time might be just a few months of strip time.
Keep in mind the day before Dora was saying she had standards for her employees, she had Faye and Penelope fightingin the coffee shop.
This shows the reality of the coffee shop rules. Regardless of whatever Dora might say, she’s tolerated all kinds of shit over the years. So for her to suddenly fire Faye over a fairly minor transgression is out of the blue.
I assume the firing will not be permanent - more of the traditional 2x4 over the head to get Faye to recognize her problem(s), get off her ample backside, and do something about them. As people above have noted, we haven’t seen her therapist in a while, and it may not be just because the strip has focused on other people for a while.
(I actually was happy to see Faye an Angus break up, because I have been a longtime shipper of her and Sven. Of course, that was before Sven made an ass of himself a few months ago (our time)/days ago (story time).)

There is nothing about “being shitfaced and still drinking on the job” that is a “fairly minor transgression”.
In an attempt to woo back readers who were completely bored with the Claire/Martin relationship, Jacques has dialed the drama up to 11 by giving Faye a drinking problem and getting her fired from the coffee shop.
My thoughts exactly. Bad enough she stank of whiskey at the start of her shift, but to keep at it during work was more than enough of a tipping point, even for a fairly lenient boss.
When I posted the above, none of the posts after 12-16-14 were showing. Go figure.
Heh, that was my first thought when she got fired. “Oh no, where else will she find another minimum wage, minimum skill position?”

This development would be slightly interesting if we didn’t already know exactly how it’s going to play out.
