. . . Isn’t Scientology supposed to be a “scientific” religion? (If not, why the name?)
I am not up on the lingo. Does this mean you believe she’s getting regular sex, and good sex at that, and doesn’t have enough acting talent to fake it if she weren’t?
If so: millions of regular non-actor women have successfully portrayed themselves as sexually satisfied, even deliriously satisfied. Even Katie Holmes can manage that. Perhaps she took acting classes at the school of “I’ll have what she’s having.”
NO NO NO! It’s L. Ron Hubbard and his cockamamy ideas. The wiki piece is pretty good and explains the “religion” connection.
From SOUTH PARK
Scientologist: Scientology is not a religion.
Stan: Then why is it called the Church of Scientology?
I dunno if T.C. is a HS dropout. I dunno if he went to a Franciscan seminary. I dunno if the Franciscans operate any HS-level seminaries.
I DO know that HS-level Catholic seminaries exist (like a prep school). Two of my brothers attended one in the San Fernando Valley during the 1970’s. Neither of them graduated from it. Neither one of them went on to become priests.
The ultimate poiint is that it is not theoretically impossible for Tom Cruise to have attended a Franciscan seminary AND to be a High School dropout.
Roger!
My take on the Tom Cruise is gay thing, and actors in general, is most of them are probably gay. Most male hair dressers are gay. Most male flight attendants are gay. Most male clothing designers are gay. Most male actors are gay.
Sure there are straight guys in these fields. I’m just saying, some fields really are heavily gay male.
I think straight guys often try out acting for awhile, but it’s the gay & bi guys who are most likely to take it seriously enough to make it their career.
It seems even though most male actors are gay, Hollywood only allows the few straight ones to go on to become famous leading men.
Personally, I don’t think that’s realistic. What I see is a lot of actors politely refusing to discuss their personal sex/love lives in too much detail. As long as you don’t make a big deal about something media insiders know is a BIG FAT LIE, they’ll more or less leave you alone.
Tom Cruise would seem to have pissed off the media with a BIG FAT LIE, and now even CNN freely acknowledges the gay “rumors.”
I was wondering, being that Tom Cruise is so litigious (sp) about gay rumors about him; what are the chances that he has people searching the internet for threads such as this one, and coming after the SDMB to shut down these threads and warn the admins and mods about allowing these to continue or risk the threat of an expensive law suit? Is this something we should be concerned about? And no, I’m not trying to whoosh anyone.
Note that Cruise is litigious only with foreign publications, foreign defendants, and/or in foreign courts. The U.S. standards of proof for libel are notably different, and more difficult to pursue successfully if one is a celebrity, than in Britain and Europe.
Especially since the Albright decision in 2004, in which a U.S. District Court held that imputing homosexuality cannot any longer be considered defamatory, even if false, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas, and dismissed a libel suit by one of Madonna’s dancers against several publishers. A U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal in 2005.
Why?
If he doesn’t practice, how will he ever get really really good at it?
Oh stop. You ever see the way Edward G. Robinson lovingly caressed Charleton Heston with his gaze in The Ten Commandments ??
I think that what many of us are overlooking here is the basic fact that Tom Cruise is from New Jersey. I mean, just think about that for a second.
Wait for it.
Yeah. See what I mean? Clear as a bell. I mean, it’s practically very common knowledge that the only confirmed heterosexual performers to ever come out of New Jersey are Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra. And some of us aren’t so sure about The Boss.
Cartooniverse
Who knows. Straight guys think it might be fun, then realize they might have to spend a few years wearing make-up and prancing around in tights quoting Shakespeare and decide, “nah, I just wanted to meet chicks and get rich and famous?”
It’s fairly common knowledge in Hollywood that Cruise is gay. He had a “contract” with Kidman that they would have a 10 year marriage.
His contract with Holmes is 5. So, by '09 they’ll split.
Mark my words.
I say no. I grew up in theater and almost none of the male actors I knew were gay, and I have known hundreds, if not thousands. I think you are believing some sort of incorrect stereotype.
YMMV, but I have a good deal of experience in the area and I don’t think so.
How can you be sure? I mean, unless you “knew” them all Biblically . . .
If you’ve known thousands of actors and “almost none of them were gay” then you’re saying there are even fewer gays in theater than there are in the general populace!
I don’t think I’m the one carrying around the incorrect stereotype.
It’d be fun to hear him explain that to Oprah if it happens.
