He: “Do you remember that scene in E.T. where . . .”
Me: "I’ve never seen E.T."
He: “YOU’VE NEVER SEEN *E.T. *??!?”
In fact, there were a lot of movies I grew up not seeing, mostly because of the strict way I was raised. So now as an adult I’ve spent a lot of time catching up on older movies. Some of the movies on my list that I’ve only just recently watched are. * E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back* and most recently, Casablanca.
But before someone moves this to Cafe Society - my OP is really not about movie watching.
My question really is this:
Are there things that you haven’t done in your life that always seem to shock people? Do you plan on doing anything to change the situation?
This could be something you’ve never read, a life experience you’ve never had, a movie you’ve never seen, a place you’ve never been - anything that the majority of the people around you IRL seem to consider a natural and assumed part of your upbringing. Anything, that when you mention it to someone, they seem to find strange or unbelievable.
Let’s try to keep it to things you haven’t done - not things you have. Thanks for sharing!
I only saw Casablanca a couple of years back, so I was in your boat for a long time.
Every Christmas I get the “You’ve NEVER seen it’s a wonderful life? It’s the best movie ever, blah, blah, blah!” It’s on my Netflix. I’ll get around to it, sometime. I have over 140 titles on my queue, have patience, grasshopper.
IRL I almost never mention I’ve never been drunk, because of the thoroughly incredulous and horrified reactions. I mean, I already get similar because I just will not drink beer, and never drink more than 1-2 drinks in an evening, but if you tell people you never got drunk they start telling you about how great all their binges were in college and how much fun they had puking their guts all over everything. I mean, they don’t say the puking was fun, but it seems like that’s how all their stories end!
Yeah, cable TV is another one. I don’t not watch TV, I watch movies, and rent shows from Netflix, and even own a few shows. I don’t understand however why people in this day and age still put up with commercials. And they look at me like I am the strange one, when I can watch a whole 40 minute show without putting up with commercials!
That might not sound like much of a confession to some people, but this is hardcore Baptist bible belt territory. Around here, the question isn’t whether or not you go to church, but which church do you go to…it’s assumed that everybody goes to some church.
I’ve been to funerals and weddings held in churches, but never a religious service.
I prefer The Big Sleep for my Bogey fix. I like the dames in it.
Do you plan to do anything about this fact? or do you feel like you now need to hold on to it for any reason?
I didn’t have my first drink as an adult until I was 33. After so many years of explaining that I don’t drink (without it being a religious thing) it seemed weird to finally drink.
Even now, I’m still not a big drinker. Mostly light weight stuff like ciders or coolers or an occasional glass of wine.
Still, it was a mental decision I made to suddenly drink after not - and on a lesser scale, to finally watch these movies after so long of just not making it a priority.
I have never watched 5 min. of ANY Star Trek TV show, spin-off or movie.
I have never watched 5 min. of Survivor, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, or any other similar reality show. (I was turned on to Amazing Race a few years back, and have enjoyed it for the most part)
I have never set foot in a Wal-Mart.
I have flown to Europe for vacation 8 separate times, and have never set foot in England, France or Italy.
When I was a kid, I thought Star Trek was like a soap opera, and that you needed to have seen every episode from the start of the series to know what was going on. By the time I found out that it wasn’t like that, I was older and had no interest in checking it out.
Wal-Mart was not around the Salt Lake City area until fairly recently, and when it came to town I had heard enough about its business model to not want to support the company if possible.
I have absolutely nothing against England, France or Italy, but I just havent made it to those places yet, spending my time in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Portugal. The very next visit I take to Europe will be spent in Southern Italy and the Dalmation Coast.
Go back in time, convince Madeleine Lebeau to appear in The Third Man wearing that little halter top, and I’ll consider revising my opinion of Casablanca.
I’ve never seen E.T. or It’s a Wonderful Life. I don’t own a cellular phone. I went skiing once, in the third grade. I don’t watch reality shows. Most people understand that one, but occasionally I run into someone who’s amazed that I don’t know who X is or what Idol show they’re on.
I’ve never been to Disney (World or Land). I have zero interest in going. I’m delighted that my son will probably have the opportunity with his high school orchestra. Then he’ll get to go and I won’t have to endure it.
I’m not much of a TV watcher. I like some shows, I’ll get transfixed for a couple hours watching a documentary about oil rigs being built, or climbers freezing on mountains, but I watch damn little in the way of your standard cops & killers, (Law and Order being the exception), sitcoms and the like.
Thus I get a lot of that response with shows people here talk about, such as:
Survivor, American Idol (and the rest of the lot of dancing/singing shows), CSI, NCIS, that Charlie Sheen show everyone loves, Modern Family, 30 Rock, Heroes, Lost…
