I’ll usually go for salt and vinegar, but Deep River Snacks makes a rosemary and olive oil chip that goes great with all my favorite sandwiches.
My favorite is Wise Salt & Vinegar. Others just aren’t as vinegary as Wise.
Utz are quite vinegary. This wrap-up is somewhat subjective, but you can look at this run-down if you like it particularly puckery.
Ruffles Cheddar and Sour Cream
The cheddar & horseradish chips I’ve tried were too overpowering on the horseradish side…will have to look for Herr’s. I do remember trying their KC Prime Steak flavor and not being overly impressed.
Everything is better with horseradish.
Trader Joe’s also has some amazing horseradish chips. I absolutely have to buy some whenever we’re near one.
I must have these or something close. I’m disappointed I can not find them in my area( SE Michigan).
Current mass market is;
Lay’s Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue. Excellent blend of sweet and heat.
When I was a kid growing up in the south a company called Wise made a barbecue chip that was terrific, they must be a regional brand because I haven’t seen them in SoCal.
Really?? I’m shocked! They are a MAJOR brand here, many flavors, been here in the Northeast like forever. This is like hearing that ‘Doritos is a regional brand’ - no! . (Maybe they are packaged under a different name. Hellman’s mayonnaise is under a different name in California._
Well it’s a BIG region. According to their locator they are an eastern seaboard brand. No one within 15 miles of me, though I can order online.
This thread made me realize that since I moved to Ohio I rarely see any brands of snack foods I grew up with, which is probably for the best.
Oooh. Thank you for this. The right combo of vinegar and salt is very important. I noticed in the link the “Walkers” potato chip label is identical to Lays. Each has the same red banner across the same yellow circle. Is Walkers the British version of Lays?
Lay’s Tapatio Hot Sauce flavor. Damn, they’re good.
On a recent visit to the US, I fell in love with Lay’s Flamin’ Hot chips. Great with a cold Coke. Sadly, we don’t get them here in Canada.
At home, it is often regular Ruffles, with Heinz chili sauce for dipping.
My new favorite is Larry the Cable Guy Biscuits N’ Gravy. Yes they do.
See, that’s just wrong.
I’ve not seen the cheddar & horseradish chip but we do buy that exact dip, always have it on hand in the fridge and yeah, friends have gone nuts over it.
Kettle Salt & Pepper for moi.
Zapps Spicy Cajun Crawtators are a close second.
Lay’s Roast Chicken. Not available in the US, sadly, but available in Newfoundland, Canada, where I spend a fair amount of time. I bring back shopping bags full of them every time I go.
One of my friends at work brought in a bag of the Biscuits N’ Gravy and the Chili Cheese fries flavors. We all kind of looked at the bags suspiciously until I got brave and busted them open. Both were good but I liked the Biscuits N’ Gravy better.
Herr’s and Utz are both available by mail order, and with quite reasonable prices.
My one major complaint for a lot of flavors of chip is that they are all kettle-style chips. I hate kettle chips! I have no desire to break a tooth or gash a gum trying to eat those hunks of metal. Just give me all those wonderful flavors on a regular chip and I’m happy.
