Seriously. Did he actually manage to get in a plug for Jeter’s fucking cologne, or did I make that up? I mean, even McCarver isn’t *that * much of a tool, right? I *had * to be hallucinating.
I just don’t get on what planet a guy making 21 mil a year (Jeter) who hits 12 HR, 73 RBI with 18 errors is thought of as a great player and not a complete bust.
McCarver’s hard-on for him would at least be sensible if he were so wonderful, but he’s not. Still creepy, but sensible.
Your prayers have been answered. It’s over.
Regards,
-God
That was a nice game. The Sox are beasts.
I’m reminded of this.
He was fantastic in the old days, when He still had his fastball, and his curve broke like nobody’s business. Shoulda seen Him strike out the side in consecutive innings when He was pitching against the Pharisees.
Maybe He just got confused and figured the Bosox were the ones pitching against the Pharisees in this series.
You guys do reallize that it is a best of seven series?
If the Rockies win the series I expect you guys who have been bashing them to become born again and dedicate your lives to Christ.
Why? Will Christians renounce their beliefs and dedicate their lives to rational thought if the Rockies lose?
I didn’t think I’d say this, but “Go Sox!”
Oh, I forgot one other reason I have to root for the Rockies: Rudy Giuliani’s announcement. I hope he roots for them in perpetuity.
A little inside information here: You really mark yourself as an outsider if you call them the Bosox. What are you from Freedonia or something?
Yeah, it’s like people around here saying “Frisco”. It just isn’t done.
Go Sox!! That article in the OP didn’t set off my outrage meeter (since the accusations seem trumped up), but being a native New Englander, I gotta go with Boston. I hope all the games aren’t like last night, though. Not much fun to watch when one team is dominating.
You’re looking at the wrong stats. A player doesn’t have to hit a lot of HRs to be valuable, and RBIs are far too context-dependent to be a useful judge of a player’s worth (if you took virtually any major leaguer and batted him in the middle of the Red Sox or Yankees lineup for a few years, he’d develop a reputation as a ‘good RBI man’).
Jeter walks, hits for average, and belts a lot of doubles. He’s a very good offensive player, but what makes him special is the fact that he can play SS, where the demands on the defensive side of the ball generally preclude offensive stars. And, hell, for the last four years Jeter’s even been about a league-average defensive SS, which is nothing to sneeze at (previously he was one of the worst fielding Shortstops).
Was Jeter’s 2007 performance worth $21M? It depends – probably not, in a vacuum. There are other things to consider, though. He was still an extremely valuable player, and the Yankees are going to spend their money somewhere, so “overpaying” for the best SS in the world isn’t a bad idea (Rollins and Tulowitzki probably had better years in '07, but that doesn’t necessarily make them better players). Jeter is worth a lot in fan loyalty, so the Yankees will recoup some of his salary in ticket and merchandise sales. Also note this year’s salary is part of a huge, multi-year contract that Jeter signed in 2001. If they wanted him through his prime (age 27-30), they had to pay for his decline years as well; it’s the cost of doing business with a player of Jeter’s caliber (besides, he’s still been pretty awesome during these decline years). By all rights, Jeter should have won the AL MVP last year (could make a good case for Mauer, too). The Yankees have no cause to regret their deal with Derek Jeter.
Yeah, it would be nice to see it go to a game 5. I’m sure that the CoRox can pull one off. But then how bad would the NewYanks and LouCards feel?
Now the betting is getting interesting.
Something like that.
What the hell, I am an outsider in that respect, given that I live in Maryland. I consider myself duly outed.
And if Ubaldo the Magnificent shuts down Boston tonight while Schilling reverts to his game before last form, the Series will go to Colorado tied 1-1 and the momentum-heads will start liking the Rockies, seeing as how the Red Sox will be without a key starter (Lowell or Youkilis) for the games there.
There will be a game 5. And likely at least a game 6.
??? What am I missing?
The lack of a DH in Coors Field.
No DH when they play in Colorado, so Boston will like sit out Lowell or Yuke to keep Ortiz in the lineup. Bad move, IMO, but then I’m not managing the team. Yet.
Got it. Thanks, guys.
Quite possibly. I hope so, in fact. Three more repeats of last night would feel like such a hollow victory.
go rox
