I got a crazy idea: how about we don’t do anything and just continue to either enjoy or avoid Mr. JohnClay’s threads? Why create any special rules for him? He’s fucking harmless and generally amusing. If he breaks any rules, treat him just as any other poster.
Rather than a JohnClay thread, why not a JohnClay forum? Kinda like the barnhouse, but interesting and well read. Worth it just for the newbies’ 
If you have a problem with the way people are posting towards you, you’d be better off clicking the “report” button and letting a mod take care of it. Otherwise you can add Jr Modding to your list of offenses here.

I agree that is a possibility, but I don’t see the supposed evidence in this thread. He honestly seems to me to be trying to get people to like him by defending himself.
I think most people on this board have a very loose definition of what a troll is. While you can be sincere and still be a troll, I think a troll has to actively enjoy pissing people off.
I wouldn’t call Dio a troll, either. Well, at least, he didn’t troll here.
BTW, I do think it funny he’s being treated better here in the Pit than he was in some of those other threads.

I’ve been on the fence about JC’s motives for a while. I really did want to believe him. But after all of the mod intervention there has been, the “poo” thread made me start conceding he might be a troll.
The above post convinced me.
Just about the only way I could have known is if I had previously read a thread that mentioned the term “junior moderator” or if I had read that thread “Beginner’s Guide to Glossary of Terms on Straight Dope Message Boards”. That thread is in “About This Message Board”.
I think about the first time I looked at ATMB I start this thread:

Perhaps you think I’m lying about it and am just doing that in order to get a reaction from people.
I am either nonplussed (American definition) or disgusted by most of what JohnClay posts under his own OP’s. But as far as I can tell, he’s never said an unkind word about anyone here. He’s certainly never been mean spirited towards anybody. So for that reason I’m not sure there’s any reason to wake the villagers and drive him out of town with pitchforks and torches.
Having said that, whatever pathology drives him to post what he posts - and I’m not entirely convinced it’s limited to his self admited polar disorder - is quite likely driven in large part by a cry for attention. Which is certainly frowned upon by some. But let’s be fair, the most inflamatory posters, the one’s whose candle burns twice as bright and burns half as long, are typically the most interesting ones. Like JohnClay, they are from the extreme ends of the ‘normal’ bell curve and they bring to front some of our most intelligent and erudite members who put forward arguments from which we all can learn something. Also, from what I’ve noticed, nothing unites and glavanizes the board as much as these extreme views. If they were completely eliminated, this place would be far more monotone and we’d be left to choose between the same old tired arguments of left vs. right politics and why X is the one special snowflake who can’t lose weight through diet and exercise.
So if JohnClay is purely a troll, as some clearly believe, he’s the least harmful troll we’ve seen around here. Leave the guy be. He’ll either wear himself out or fall in his own excrement and drown. Until then he’ll continue to nonplus and disgust us, and folks – That’s entertainment.
