I don’t know who’s being ironic anymore, but at any rate, “Nazi” isn’t an initialism, and never was one. It’s short for “Nationalsozialist” (“National” is pronounced like “Nazional” in German)

Or, on reflection, maybe not. Since the contraction only exists in English and wasn’t used by Germans perhaps your explanation is correct.

Years ago, when I lived in Hawaii, I used to walk past a Chinese restaurant on Keeamoku Street whose name was Something-Or-Other88. Who’d a thunk they were secretly in league with the Nazis?
