I have read and followed the thread and question since the beginning and I must admit I have been fascinated. I am not quite as accepting of the motives and explanations of Millen88 as most of you are. What he wrote was interesting and not typical of what most of us would imagine a white nationalist would say. Consider the following though:
- The 88 as a salute to Hitler coming from a white nationalist is one hell of a coincidence.
- He seems to be a member of Stormfront. It does not appear to be a coincidence that he showed up followed by their members. Stormfront is controlled and populated by honest to God Nazis. Most of the avatars are versions of Swastikas. If you thought Hitler was a madman, as Millen once claimed, why would you assoicate with people who think he was the bee’s knees?
- It would be better strategy to start with the more moderate views of white nationalism before starting on the extremist ones. Millen is undeniably intelligent and is likely to realize this.
I am unable to take him at face value. I am a bit surprised so many others are.
And I have been composing really biting and a propos responses to you since I posted. I was completely enraged.

You’re missing the point. He may well have been a Nazi, but a) being a Nazi sympathiser is not a crime, and b) so fucking what? Were we all going to be swayed by his arguments because we thought he wasn’t all that bad a guy? Hardly. If John McCain suddenly started advocating preemptive war as a basis for US foreign policy, people aren’t going to start supporting it just because he’s usually so reasonable.
askeptic and others were basically conducting a big, pointless witch-hunt. Was he going to get banned for being a Nazi? Of course not. Would he have been banned if he did start spouting hateful racist bullshit? Of course.
Anyway, he’s gone now.

I wasn’t interjecting to agree with askeptic, nor did I ever claim to agree with him. I was responding to previous posts that took Millen’s word on the nature of his beliefs. I was pointing out a few reasons why I felt it would be unwise to take his statements in that thread at face value.
Nope. Godwin’s Law simply predicts that if you let a thread run for an infinite length of time, someone will mention Nazis/Hitler. The perception that it ends a discussion with the person mentioning Nazis losing the discussion is incorrect.

I’ve got a number of the same concerns you have fruitbat, but at the same time, I don’t see a way to do anything but give him the benefit of the doubt and take him at his word. Especially if the alternative is to run around shrieking “NAZI!” like the OP did.
Today, the term “racist” makes a number of people do a :rolleyes: because it’s been watered down by some to mean “Someone I disagree with.” \\ and given the legitmate problems of racism, not having a word that actually carries weight is a problem. I don’t want to see that happening to the term “Nazi”. And even if he does turn around in a month and say “Ha-ha! I fooled you! Sieg Heil, schwienhunds!” I’ll still stand by my stance here. Like I said, I find Millen88’s views scary and some of his comments do make me raise an eyebrow, but either we accept Dopers at face value until proven liars or the messageboard becomes…well…the Usenet.
I don’t think your personal semantics fit the kind of educated debate we hope happens on these boards.
In other words; ‘racist’ is still a completely viable term with its full meaning intact, regardless of “some” you may know.
