If you’re seeing that big-ass space between the name and the avatar, you can try switching to the Straight Dope v3.7.3 – it doesn’t show up there.

I give up. Can’t get a picture to the right size. I downloaded Gimp, resized an image, saved it, then tried to install it and it failed. Oh, well.

After resizing the image make sure to export it as a jpeg or gif.

With the new skin and the avatars, the page looks like crap. And, the user names of those who don’t have avatars doesn’t line up with those who do. And, the extra whitespace between the avatar and the user name makes it even worse.

I haven’t seen an answer yet, so I’ll ask again: Wasn’t the default going to be that we wouldn’t see them?

PNG also works. (If you do it as a gif, you have to change the number of colors – I can’t remember what it is)

Like I said, I’d be happy to help people edit their pictures, if they’re having trouble. Maybe we could have an avatar sticky for that? (That would keep all the avatar talk confined to one thread, too)

Avatars are like signatures and name changes; they are retroactive. Disabling avatars in your User CP will hide all avatars while you’re logged in.

No one in charge said that, just some of us members that were conjecturing about what they could do. Besides, in turning on avatars you probably want them on by default to give the board the least bit of a non-2000 look for those visiting for the first time.

Well that is of course true, but Avatars aren’t going to save the board, maybe, just maybe they’ll help a little. It is more of there is no reason not to have them and they really can’t hurt. When I use to browse from work on “other boards” that had avatars, I turned the feature off just to be safe.

Go here and drag your photo onto the screen. It should tell you it’s creating a post. Once it shows you the photo, hover over the down arrow and select edit image (circled in red). That opens up the editing menu. Click on whichever number is bigger in the area circled in red and change it to 50. Make sure you leave the lock proportions checkbox checked and apply changes. You should now have a picture that is 50x50 pixels or less in size and it’s hosted online. You can either save the photo to your computer and upload it or rightclick on the photo and choose open in new tab and link to that url in your user CP instead. Either way should work.
