That’s where I went…but there seems to be a bit of art in deciding what looks decent at 50x50px. I think I’m happy with it for now–one tuner off of my bass.

Yeah, hard to get much detail in 50x50px, but I think I actually like that most people probably can’t make out WTF my avatar is. It’s distinctive, so it does the job.
I think this size is fine for an avatar. There are a few I’ve seen that are sort of a blur, trying to cram too much detail into too little space, but most of them are pretty effective.
I have a couple of avatar images lying around. One is a self-portrait of me holding an hourglass, but I decided that I didn’t like the way it looked downsized to 50x50. So I went with the visibly-simpler hourglass by itself.
And I do like that it takes up the same amount of vertical space as the textual information, so it doesn’t stretch out that field.
Cool.
