I will no longer be participating in any "unemployed Doper" threads

Because I GOT THE JOB!

The one that I’ve had my heart set on for the last week.

It suits me perfectly, and takes advantage of both my years of experience in customer service and my interest and (minimal) experience in IT work. It’s full time, easy to get to transportation-wise, pretty short commute, and I’ll be making a lot more than I’ve ever made for regular work.

And just in time, too; my savings are dwindling and payments on my student loans are just starting to ramp up again. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been lazy, I should have found a job back in the summer when I first decided not to go to school this year, but tearing a ligament in my ankle and being on crutches for a month made it hard to get around.

But that’s beside the point. I’m so excited! I start tomorrow at 8! I’ve been calling everyone I know all day to share the news. I can finally look myself in the mirror, buy things for my girlfriend, stop borrowing money from my dad, write to my grandparents without obfuscating the issue of what I’m doing with my life.

There are going to be days when I’ll hate doing this job, but I’ll always love having it.

Thanks to everyone who offered words of support, encouragement, and advice. I promise I’ll remember you all when I become president of the company!

excellent!!!

put in an extra sandwich in the lunch pail, and play nice with the other kids.

Congrats! Glad to read it.

Congratulations! I’ve got an interview tomorrow, so maybe I’ll be joining you soon.

Yay, White Lightning! Hope to join you soon in the Working World.

Thanks everybody! rocking chair, I’ll try to remember not to pinch anybody, especially the girls. But I hope they know that I don’t like to be bothered when I’m playing in the sandbox. Slainte, thanks again! I think it was probably your good luck wishes that sealed the deal on this one. cjhoworth, good luck tomorrow, and c_carol, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you both! Be sure and let us know when things work out.

Congratulations White Lightning! I’m very happy for you.

Good luck, cjhoworth on your interview tomorrow and to c_carol too. And for all those looking for employment, I think about the nearly serendipitous way I fell into my job and offer this non-haiku:

On random walks
through paths unknown,
opening possibility.

Good luck to you all.

Congratulations, White Lightning! Very happy to hear the news.

cjhoworth and c_carol: only the very best of luck to you.

I to have recently gotten a job after a long search and share in your joy. Congrats, it feels great to be a man again.

Many congrats. Now if you would just throw some of that good fortune my way. I badly need it.

That’s excellent! In light of this development, it seems only fair to surrender the Black Sea, Rumania and Galacia to me, with an option on Budapest. Wouldn’t want you to be distracted from your new work because of any Dip stuff. Only thinking in your best interests, since that way you’d probably be able to keep up on all of the fantasy leagues that you’re in.

Seriously, though, can you give a bit more background on the job? What kind of work is it? (I’m in IT, hit me with the gory details)

Yay for you, White Lightning!

Congrats, White Lightning!

Just don’t let the new job distract you from the WorldMasters Tourney, now!
[sub]For those that don’t know - most of you - that’s an email Diplomacy tournament. WL and I and some other Dopers are on a team together.[/sub]

And good luck, cjhoworth, Atreyu, and c_carol - hope things look up for all of you soon.

Well, only a day after I ask for luck in this thread, this happens.

Wishing you both luck and happiness in your new position

Atreyu, congrats! I hope the move turns out well for you, if that’s the course you decide on.

Maybe the good employment luck is rubbing off! This thread must be a lucky charm.

cjhoworth, how did your interview go?

Muad’Dib, boy, does it ever. You hit the nail right on the head with that one. I truly feel like a more worthwhile person today than I did yesterday.

Thanks to brachyrhynchos, Flamsterette_X, Gazelle from Hell and Khadaji also.

Shibb, RT, don’t worry. This will cut down on my Dip stress (because I won’t be sitting around all day staring at the board waiting for an adjudication that’s days away), but not on my ability to prosecute whatever righteous campaign of destiny I happen to be involved in at a given time. So far it looks like I fulfilled my dream of getting a job where I’ll be in front of a computer most all day equipped with a high speed internet connection, but that I won’t have the spare time to be able to take advantage of it. Such is life.

The job amounts to being the New Guy in the customer service department for Stacks & Stacks, a furnishings/organizing retailer. As soon as I finish being the New Guy I get the impression I’m going to be the Go-To Guy. When you call the customer service number on the website, I’m the odds-on favorite to be the guy answering the phone at the other end. While in terms of seniority I’m the low man on the totem pole, I’m the one spearheading the job of handling all the direct customer service in our 5-person Customer Service Department; everyone else in the department has other specific things to take care of too. It’s not an IT position, it’s just that my experience in the field was helpful because for example nobody has to show me how to cut and paste or how to find stuff on the internet.

So essentially I answer phones and solve problems. Today the calls I took were about 1/3 taking orders and 2/3 answering questions about products and dealing with problems with orders (like damaged merchandise, missing parts, missing items, etc.). I spent a lot of time calling different vendors and manufacturers trying to find out about their merchandise and about shipments and orders and stuff like that.

So, I’m sure that was more detail than you’re looking for. But I’m still so excited! It didn’t even bother me (much) that I had to get up at 6:45 this morning (I know, no biggie, but for me that’s like 5 hours before my average waking time). It’s only been one day but I love the job! Also all the people there are really nice. I’m just so excited to be working again.

Aww, you’re sweet - but you did this all on your own. Way to go.
