I would just like to say that Metallica kicks ass

Well, slap my arse and call me Humphrey. You’re absolutely right!

Cisco, it was you whom I was referring to instead of Edward the Head. At least I got palmyra right!

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Ed.

whew and I thought I had done something bad too!

Just heard about Jason leaving…very sad to me, but I cant say Im surprised. Ive always felt like he was the one who didnt seem to fit, and in a way, I have respected him more than the others. I just wonder if he is fed up with the others (especially Lars)…I can really see Jason having no problem with Napster or disapproving of the band going more mainstream.

I have always hated the term “selling out”…I believe that if you like a band, you like it. I will always buy Metallica records, even if they are not doing songs like Master of Puppets anymore. But lately I have realized that Metallica HAS substantially fit the label of “sell-outs”. Especially after hearing Bob rock describing the production of the Black Album: he basically said that he wanted to get Metallica exposed to a wider audience. Read: he wanted to make the songs more radio-ready, sacrificing the bands complexity and talent. I mean, Bob Rock produced Motley Crue for god sakes…he is good at producing 4-minute, one-riff/one-musical-theme songs which might groove a little, but dont say much. Metallica doesnt do that. I believe Bob Rock “Motley Crue-ized” them - squashing their talent for making 7-minute epic songs with several themes and changes in order to get them on the radio with 4-minute, one riff songs. That kinda sounds like selling out to me. And this Napster thing totally went against their screw-everything ethic…I expected them of ALL bands to say, “Ah, we have enough money, we respect the fans…let 'em do what they want.” The only Metallica stuff I got from Napster was live recordings or other songs which arent on any album. But I was still kicked off Napster for it - my feelings for the band diminished a bit because they screwed me just for being a huge fan who has done nothing but support them.

As far as “rednecks” go…Metallica is my fave band of all time, and I DO live in North Carolina, but I am anything but a redneck. I just like great, talented, passionate music that makes you FEEL. Whether it be Tool, Queensryche, The Indigo Girls, or Savage Garden. And, oh yeah…I’m gay.
Gay…Redneck. Dont really go together, do they?

First off, I didn’t think “S&M” worked at all. Sounded dissonant to me, like they were throwing in symphony music for the sake of doing so. One didn’t really complement the other.

idiotboy:

Exactly.

One of my buddies was the hugest Metallica fan around. Hung in there well after most of us who saw them losing their coolness, vitality and relevance. (Which began a little on AJFA [the most horribly mixed bass and low-end drum sound I think I’ve ever heard], became very troubling on The Black Album [try this little exercise: picture Cliff Burton playing bass on “Nothing Else Matters,” which could almost be a Backstreet Boys song. Not a chance.], and went basically right down the crapper from thenceforth.)

Anyway, my buddy now hates them, after they threatened to sue him for downloading old Metallica albums on Napster. He was given the choice of unregistering from Napster or going to court. That will tend to make a huge fan rather angry.

And do you know how many of those tapes and CDs the guy had purchased over the years of those he was downloading? Multiple copies. He would wear them out over time.

It was a stupid, stupid move for a now irrelevant band that’s clearly in it for the money and not much else anymore.

Ha!

The Boys from Toronto fart in your general direction!

Seven minutes may not be Top 40, but it ain’t 2112 either. Although, by this standard, a certain mr. Oldfield has all of them beat.

Thank you for not ignoring me!

Yeah, there’s no point in fighting the revolution. Metallica and Dr. Dre are only hurting themselves by trying.

The only way for a band to have a future is to embrace the technology, give away the recordings, and go on tour!
