I agree with Scylla that the “Goodbye Cruel SDMB” post was pretty lame. If you don’t want to play by our rules, take your ball and go home–no one’s forcing you to be here.
The problem I have is that now there’s no way of being able to say “I don’t think I can post here anymore.” Last March, a lot of bad things were happening in my life, and I was getting pretty depressed. I felt like my posts were starting to get a little rambling and incoherent, and that I had less and less to contribute to the Board. I decided, whether for good or bad, to stop posting for a some time. But, at the time, there had been a real spate of “This board is so horrible! I’m leaving! You’ll never see me again!” posts. I believed, that, no matter how valid my reasons for going were, I wouldn’t be able to post a “good-bye” thread and be taken seriously. I also thought that, if I did that and then returned too quickly, I would be slated for it.
So, instead, I just quietly dropped out of sight. I’m not sure if anyone ever realised I was gone, I don’t know if anyone cared or not. I was gone a lot longer than I thought I would be (nine months), and when I did return a few Dopers (thank you Zyada, thank you Brynda) had wondered where I’d been all this time. If I’d been able to post a “good-bye” thread, at least people would have known I was OK and just needed some time out.
I know this is the Pit, but I just needed to get that off my chest.
Heh, now that the Bastardly Scylla is no longer posting (in this thread) we can make jokes about him and snicker all night long at his expense!
I am afraid I can rate it no higher than a five. He gets high marks for subtlety. However, I feel that he has failed to realized his true “Cheap Drama” potential.
For example, I think the farewell rant was sorely lacking in condescending judgments about how threads like this used to be, long before threads like his were “ruined” by people who “just don’t get” what the boards are about. Then, a comment about how it’s even worse since we got the new board… well, that would make this seem fresh and up-to-date.
For my part, let me keep this thread on the right track historically by saying:
Gosh Scylla, I hope that with time and thought and a break you’ll reconsider and come back to this thread. We all need a break sometimes, it’s healthy. We’ll all be thinking of you and missing you SO much.
Now, how are these things usually signed? “Hugs?” or “Much Love?”

No doubt he would be spoken of only in the hushed tones of awe if he were to do something that totally edgy. A man capable of that kind of exit, you would have to say bestrides this world like a collossus. Really. No way around it. Total coolness.
Scylla, you ever think of doing politics or the law? I mean, from what I see here, you’ve got the potential to get a whole crowd of people you thoroughly disagree with to agree with you, and then be able to point to the actual words of the speech afterwards, when you’ve sold the whole bunch down the river, and say “Where in this speech did I ever tell you I’d do that?”
If not Presidential material, then at the very least Presidential potential.
This thread just isn’t the same since scylla left.
