A while back, there was a Doper by the name of Sua Sponte.
I’m lookin’ for him/her. Reason: I came across some paperwork that had “© 1993 Sua Sponte, Inc.” and I got curious.

I kind of doubt there’s a connection between the Doper and the company…but who knows?
For what it’s worth, “sua sponte” is a Latin phrase meaning something on the lines of “of one’s own free will”.
“Sua Sponte” is one of the US Army Rangers mottoes, and based on what I recall of his posts, I’m going to guess that this is the reason he chose.
Was he a serviceman? Maybe he got deployed or something.
Oh, wait. Maybe that’s what the link in the previous post is about. Maybe I should read that?
**SuaSponte ** last posted on 12 May. Perhaps he’s just on holidays?
Sua Sponte is a lawyer. I kind of really don’t think he was a serviceman in a previous life, but stranger things have happened.
A Doper’s nom de plume.
Latin for “of one’s own accord; voluntarily.” Used when the court addresses an issue without the litigants having presented the issue for consideration. Most frequently used when the court determines that jurisdiction is not proper even though both parties have agreed to appear in the court. see, e.g. Carlisle v. United States, 517 US 416 (1996) and Trest v. Cain, 522 US 87 (1997).
Thanks, Gingy, for letting me know about this thread.
I have nothing to do withSua Sponte, Inc., and as I my parents were married, I am self-evidently not an Army Ranger.
Sua
And this is where I came across the phrase–on some platoon status cards that struck me as odd. Consider it a case of “Oh, look!”
Sua, I stand corrected. Lawyer or not, it was too good a coincidence to not post a thread. I tried, I asked.

Like I said, I was curious.
