I'm spending my birthday, 11/1, alone at a Boston restaurant

Happy Birthday, tdn.

I am sorry to report that the cold/sore throat/thingamabob that is going around my office has gotten the better of me and I won’t be able to make it. I really am sorry, too. I was looking forward to seeing everyone. :frowning:

I’m sure you would have thumbed your nose at the strippers I ordered anyways.

Did I say strippers? I meant card. I hate it when I do that.

gigi, hope to see you there. I’ll be the guy in the red shirt and gold tie.

lorene, what the hell? Get over it. Load up on the vitamin C, and show up. It’ll be sad if you can’t make it. :frowning:

bbs2k, a “card” would be great. Maybe one wearing a pink teddy.

I hope to recruit a work pal to come with me…I have a question. It looks like 93 goes very close to Faneuil Hall marketplace thingie, and there is supposed to be lots of parking in 75 State Street parking garage?? I have to take 93 anyway, but is it more confusing than the directions make it seem?

75 State St site:
Take 1-93 South to Exit 24-A marked “Government Center”. Follow the signs toward the “Aquarium” to the Southbound Surface Artery. Turn right at State Street. Continue three blocks and turn left onto Broad Street. The garage entrance for 75 State Street is on the right.

Mapquest:
Take EXIT 24B-A toward RT-1A N / AIRPORT / GOV’T CTR.
Take EXIT 24-A toward GOV’T CTR. 0.1 miles Map
Turn LEFT onto JOHN F FITZGERALD SURFACE RD / SURFACE RD. 0.1 miles Map
Turn RIGHT onto STATE ST. 0.2 miles Map
End at 75 State St

My alternate plan is the Alewife garage and cab it.

It depends on how good you are with a map. Boston is absolutely terrible about street signs. There have been times I’ve driven for several blocks, just looking for a sign to tell me which street I’m on, and can’t find one. If you’re hoping for white letters on a green background saying “JOHN F FITZGERALD SURFACE RD”, you’re likely to be disappointed.

But, sites like mapquest will usually let you display a map of the route. Zoom in on the area around the garage and print it. If you can follow that, you’ll probably be fine.

Why is this the alternate, and why a cab? There are many things wrong with the MBTA, but for getting to Faneuil Hall during rush hour, it might be the best option.

I can’t speak to the driving route, but a cab from Alewife will be costly. You’re probably looking at $30-40 each way, not including the tip.

You could take the red line to Downtown Crossing, then get on the Orange Line to State Street, then it’s about two blocks from there.

Good call. My friend will be coming with me, and she’s driven around there so we should be OK.

Looking forward to it!!

Great!

You might want to clue your friend in on what the Dope is all about. She might feel a little lost what with all the 1920’s style Opals and whatnot.

Fear of subways, gigi?

(If there wasn’t a term for this, I was going to coin my own; but a web search turns up “bathysiderodromophobia”.)

Your presence will be missed, lorene; now we’ll just have to this all again next spring sometime.

Shouldn’t be a problem; we only do that for 20 minutes.

Like a motherfuck.

Not at all; I used to live in The Big City and they’re no problem. I just don’t feel up that whole step in the process.

I haven’t told her about the specific site, because let’s face it, I tell all my secrets here. Ultimately I don’t care if she figures it out though; I think she has her own on-line communities she’s already involved in.

If it’s been a while since you’ve taken the subway here, be forwarned – the fare stucture has completely changed. It’s now $2 to go anywhere. If you have ones, that works, otherwise you’ll have to buy a Charlie ticket (not a Charlie card) with a credit or debit card. Try to avoid paying with bills higher than ones. You’ll lose money.

Happy birthday, tdn! It sounds like a heck of a party you’ve got going there. Please accept my good wishes, a virtual hug, and some virtual balloons.

:smack: Thank you, Siege! I’d been distracted by mapquesting.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, tdn !! How’s it going so far?

I’ve been watching this thread for the past couple of weeks, but waited until today to post because I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. Have a great time at dinner tonight.

Thanks to both of you! So far, it’s pretty much just a normal day. No one at the office has said anything, so either they just forgot, or they’re planning something for later.

It was nice to get a well wishes from my dentist’s receptionist. I wished her well too. She’s exactly one year younger than me. (To put it in perspective, I needed to call her office today anyway. Yesterday, I was there for a visit, and she was seriously jonesing for a Mounds bar. She wouldn’t stop talking about it. So after my visit, I went out and got her one. She said it made her day.)

Going out tonight. Going out tomorrow night. Saturday I’ll field phone calls from the family. That will pretty much take up the whole day.

Thanks!

Happy birthday, tdn. Enjoy yourself tonight, and raise one for me!

(I’ve got a friend who’s on business in Boston this week, but she won’t go. I tried to talk her into it…)

Happy Birthday, tdn, fellow November baby! And now you bring in the month…and in 30 days I will close it out with my own birthday. (Along with no_one special).
