That was Alien. Fortunately, Aliens has nothing to date it.
I have to say I like the modified version better
Hey, I resemble that remark! I posted a ridiculously long-winded screed on a public message board! How is that not doing something? Is it my fault I don’t have killer Photoshop skills?
But seriously, that modified image is exactly what I was talking about, and it’s reassuring to know that I’m not alone in my insanity. A slightly higher cut to the shorts, bring the S-shield back to macroscopic proportions, nix the belt logo, tweak the color scheme a bit, and see what a world of difference that makes? A much more harmonious arrangement, in my opinion.
I can’t tell if they changed the blue or if the stronger red makes it look darker–but the “impression” of the blue in the new one also gives a much better sense of buffness than the more baby blue.
I like the red in the modified version. The other burgundy/maroon was a too dark.
It looks like they also changed the boots so they go higher on the calf, which somehow just balances the whole look a little better.
I prefer my super heroes to look more like they’re wearing a nice fitting pair of Calvin Kleins than a pair of Depends.
Personally, I think the whole costume looks like it was made from the same material they make edible panties out of.
And this new guy isn’t buff enough.
I’d heard a rumor once that Gregg Avedon (shirtless buff model, otherwise worksafe) was in the running for the role. I don’t know if he can act, but I like him better than this other guy.
Edible underwear are basically fruit roll-ups pressed a little thinner, aren’t they?
Anyway, I agree. Supes’ threads should be bright additive primary colours. They should look fruity, but not like fruit leather.
I like the modified version better.
That said, why haven’t you guys commented on the boots yet? They look like duck feet! First, the uppers look like a burgundy waffle cone. I can’t stand that little v-shaped slit at the top. And the sole looks wider than any other part of the boot, so it looks like El Superdudo has a small set of flippers.
Making them taller, as in the modified version, helps, but they still look like galoshes. I guess that’s okay if your local hero is wading through a morass of liquified evil, but it’s stupid if he’s flying.
I’ve never seen a fruit roll-up, but I have, uh… seen edible panties at the store.
Your point is well taken; they do look unreasonably clunky, and I seem to recall the Reeve boots looking a bit more svelte. Then again, if the boots are enough of a problem to draw attention away from the rest of the action by themselves, there’s probably something fundamentally awry with the whole movie. Given the costume’s other manifest idiosyncrasies, I think the boots are probably the least problematic design element.
Another thing I notice about the modified picture **Scott Plaid ** linked to: the neckline is slightly lower and more open than the original, which I think is also an improvement. It’s more authentic to the comic design, allowing the cape to fall directly from the shoulders, whereas the cape of the unmodified costume seems bunched up around the neck, creating an uncomfortably snug effect.
I also think **Sage Rat ** makes a very good point that the new shorts will date the film, probably at least as badly as a movie featuring Long-Haired Superman of the late '90s would have.
Maybe I’m fooling myself, but I can’t help thinking that even if a large portion of the new movie is already in the can, the modified picture clearly demonstrates how even a few CG adjustments in post-production could improve the onscreen appearance of the costume immeasureably. If it means the difference between a multimillion-dollar franchise character looking suitably iconic or just mildly cheesy, I’d say it would be money well spent.
