Invisible Idiots

I have a sweep–Category Three in its entirety. The topic is “Authors”.

  1. Mark from an old injury; allow; prominent airport; sound of contentment
    Scar, let; O’hare, ah
    Scarlett O’Hara

  2. Affluent; stiff; lumbar region; not woman
    Rich, hard; back, man
    Richard Bachman

  3. Derogatory term for the Irish; call a cab; sob; large measurement of weight
    Mick, hail; cry,ton
    Michael Crichton

  4. Marbly, stripy gemstone; singular expression of laughter, model Turlington
    agate, ha; Christy
    Agatha Christie

  1. Scarlett O’Hara
  2. Michael Chrichton
  3. Agatha Chrisitie

Since when is Scarlett O’Hara an author? Last time I checked, fictional characters couldn’t legally sign publishing contracts.

wink

Geez, you guys are fast! The topic officially was “Literary Figures” but as that was kind of unclear, any similar answer is perfectly fine.

tcha. If they’re so fast why are 60 percent of my last crop (and the category) still unsolved?

Oh, and here’s another block:

help, nothing in france; black pal, twisted sister

small cut, mexican greetings; emprison

not your, snuff out; punish singapore style

animal’s lair, holler; week part, british bathroom, exists

car accessory; smooth-edged coin, java maker

Cheffie:
1,001 Facts about Planet Earth

Co-authored with Cally Hall and Jen Green.

Oh PHLBTH. If you expect me to believe that THAT’s the Scarlett O’Hara you meant, then you are lying the lies of a big lie-filled lying liar. Who lies.

Oh, and by the way, embarrassing typo above - that should be imprison up there, not emprison.

Actually I googled “Scarlett O’Hara”+author before I posted the sweep, just to see if I could mess with anyone’s mind. Apparently, it worked. :stuck_out_tongue:
Besides, “Literary Figures” with a bunch of authors and one fictional character seems over-broad.

Sweep: Actors–

help, nothing in france; black pal, twisted sister
aid,rien; bro, Dee
Adrian Brodie

small cut, mexican greetings; emprison
nick,holas; cage
Nicholas Cage

not your, snuff out; punish singapore style
my, kill; cane
Michael Caine

animal’s lair, holler; week part, british bathroom, exists
dan,yell; day,loo,is
Daniel Day-Lewis

car accessory; smooth-edged coin, java maker
jack; nickel, Sun
Jack Nicholson

1 - ?,?; bro-dee
? brodie

2 - no clue

3- my, kill; cane
Michael Caine

4-den, yell; day, loo, is
Daniel Day Lewis

5 - jack; nickel, ?
Jack Nickelson (sp?)

“Richard Bachman” didn’t really exist either, you know.

And you got it all except the category - your category isn’t WRONG, obviously, but it isn’t specific enough. The category I was going for is “This year’s Best Actor nominees.”

Also, according to Callahan’s rules, you can’t announce a sweep once someone solves one of the individual riddles.

Since people have stopped working on this one, I’ll go ahead and tell you the answers.

The category is “This year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Director.”

Mug; swamp, every bit - Rob; Marsh, all (Rob Marshall)
Red Planeteer; earn points, remark, look at - Martian; score, say, see (Martin Scorsese)
Sharply tilted, pullet; more thoroughly killed, rave drug nickname - Steep, hen; deader, E (Stephen Dedry)
Wandering around; telephone survey, Henry’s wife, slalom - roamin’; poll, Ann, ski (Roman Polanski)
handed over the money, lined-up group; popular muppet, jumped headfirst, pirate outburst - paid, row; Elmo, dove, ahrr (Pedro Almodovar)

Now someone PLEASE post some reasonably hard ones that I can work on.

Hey! I had all those except Stephen Dedry! Ah, well, that’s the risk in trying for sweeps.

“Bachman” may not have existed, but he was most certainly an author. And Fin hadn’t posted his answers at my last preview; it’s not like at Callahan’s, where you hear someone announce their answers, so :p.

I won’t answer any more until I come up with some of my own.

Waitaminute–I posted before Fin. When did I declare a sweep when someone else had already solved one of the riddles?

My mistake. I had two similar blocks of puzzles extant, and it was the other one that had been partially answered.

  • often Burt’s co-star, contained, negatives; fuel dirts, vocalization of relief
  • Stone’s member, godfather, automaker nickname
  • it’s cold!, onogrowl; checkers coup
  • question of time, poor grades
  • UK buh bye, with; trumpet part
  • desire, fold in, door-opener; burnt out; babe, food container

Get the sweep by getting all 6 and the theme.

Grrrrrrrrr.

Third one should read:
“it’s cold!, growl; checkers coup”

Hi guys! I’ve been lurking on the SDMB for weeks now, and it’s -this- thread I decide to register to post on! What does that say about me? I just hope I don’t end up falling into the “total dipsticks” category.

Here’s a few on a theme, which answers the question: Where does the Bunnylady live?

Irishman, door opener; imitates a cat

Scotch bonnet, father; brown horse

Gore, Marvin or Merriwether, fence break, galley implement

Spy; young woman

Welcome to the SDMB, Bunnylady! You’ll do just fine here, and I’m honored it was my thread you decided to lose your post-virginity on.

So far, I’ve only got the first of yours: Mickey Mouse.

I’ll keep working on them!

Oh, and what kind of bunnies you got?
