I suppose I can set foot in a church.
But if you see smoke suddenly begin to rise from my body when I cross the threshold, let me know, 'K?
2 August would be most perfectly perfect for me also.

Great, just what my overactive imagination needs–vindication!
August the second works for me. At least I think it does…I will hopefully be employed by then, but I don’t anticipate taking a job that makes me work weekends…
The potluck aspect is a bit problematic though, since I don’t cook much. I guess I could bring some nice cheese and bread or something. Or maybe I could make some homebrew for the occasion… Can you drink beer in a church basement?
Either of the first two weekends in August are good for me. I’ll be happy to do some cooking for the potluck. I’ve got some friends who really need to meet all of the good SDMB’ers. They’re new to Portland and are looking for intelligent company.
Please let me know which weekend you select ASAP so I can buy a train ticket right away.
Only for inane, pointless, obscure stuff… thats why I feel so at home in this forum!
Ask what I did yesterday… I am clueless.
Aug 2nd is very good for me. Please decide soon so I can put in for the time off.
Gosh I am all giddy …
TVGuy if it isn’t you smoking… it will be me.
I promise not to tell anyone you smoked after being with a FEMALE!
Sorry, no booze in the basement. We’ll just have to step across the street to the local pub.
If we do potluck, do we plan it out, or do we just do it blind and hope for the best?
Hmm, so I suppose the virgin sacrifice is right out?
Virgin sacrifice potlucks never work out. Either everyone who shows up is a virgin and expects to be “the” sacrifice, or nobody brings a virgin at all! You really need a professional coordinator to put on a good virgin sacrifice.
Count me tentatively in.
I’ve done a few potlucks before where everyone volunteers to bring a “staple” and a surprise - the staples being agreed upon beforehand and the “surprises” (oddly enough) being, um, surprises - maybe someone decides to whip up a batch of grandma’s special sugar cookies or something - you get the drift.
I make a pretty mean strawberry / angel cake desert that’s to die for. Just have to figure out a way to carry it on the bike…
I’m in Battle Ground and would certainly be interested in seeing the whole bunch. Can’t offer accommodations, but keep me posted as to where and when. Mrs. Tom will whip up something for the pot luck too. Guess I should refer to her as the little woman.
I can whup up some salsas, requests are permitted. Someone else can bring the yellow corn chips.
If there is an outdoor barbeque or a grill in the church kitchen I can make my Philippine pork skewers.
Have we settled on August 2[sup]nd[/sup]? Gotta by my choo choo tickey.
Let’s make it official, I guess.
Date: August 2nd, 2003
Place: The basement of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 7600 North Hereford Avenue 97203-3432. North Hereford is off of Lombard-look for a fire station on one side of Hereford and the St. Andrew’s sign on the other. St. Andys is on the right hand side.
Facilities: Two stoves, two microwaves, a refrigerator, a damn fine college pub across the street(The Twilight Room).
Sy no more TVGuy for strawberry angel food I will CRAWL to Portland! hahaha Plenty of room in my truck to haul anything anyone needs taken to the Dopefest.
I guess that means I am commited to attend! YEAH!
I’m on tour most of July and part of August, but we’re going to be in Salem that weekend, so I should probably be able to make it back up to Portland for the 2nd for a while, at least.
What time are we planning this - afternoon? Evening?
I’d also be able to carpool people from the Salem area up, since I’ll be down there anyway.
August 2[sup]nd[/sup] it is.
So, the barbecue is right out. I guess I’ll just do salsa patrol. Mebbe some guacamookie on the side.
[trundles off to train station]
PS: Official permission requested to bring two really fine non-SDMB friends to this event. As mentioned, they are recent arrivals and in desperate need of intelligent Portland area friends.
Might I suggest that people taking the train get together and take advantage of the special group rates they have? Last time I looked they had a special where the first person pays full fare, the second pays half price and the third rides free. I don’t know if it’s still valid, but it’s worth checking out.
Or worse, the virgin turns out not to be a virgin after all, and then the volcano god is angered, and it’s a pyroclastic enema for the whole town! Yeah, best we leave it alone…
Thanks for a great suggestion, Czar. Even though I will probably not be able to take advantage of their special two-fer deal, I still had a life-affirming experience at the train station today anyway.
I set up the entire itinerary with the sales cleark only to have him ask me, “Do you have Internet access?”
After replying in the affirmative, this splendid specimen of humanity mentioned how I would receive a 20% discount by purchasing my ticket over the 'net.
W00T!!!
