Bingo!
By the way, are any dopers coming down by train? If so, you can save a little moolah by going to the Vancouver station. where I am sure a ride can be arranged.

Does anyone have a digital camera so that we can get pictures taken? I don’t think we’ve had shots of a Portland Dopefest yet.
I’ll see if I can remember to bring one along.
i’ll be back in portland on the 22nd at noon-thirty . C’mon… how about the ‘pub at the end of the universe’ on se gladstone? the have eye of the hawk on tap usually.
I will try to remember to bring a camera as well, as I have been cleared for the rendezvous by Homewife. (Today I spent what would have been a day off driving her folks into Stumptown in the pouring rain to visit such scenic wonders as Trader Joes and Costco, so I have bonus Husband Points™ to burn).
The “P at the E of the U” was my favorite pub when I lived in Southeast. I haven’t been there in years! And Eye of the Hawk is some damn fine beer…
But since I now live in St. John’s, I’m gonna have to support the St. John’s Pub. Sorry.
Another issue: Turns out I may have some child care issues that day, in that I may not have any. If I can’t work something out, I hope no one minds if I bring the Ferrousling? He’s eight. I promise he’s extremely intelligent, charming, articulate, and handsome, and I’m not the least bit biased.
I’m skipping out of going snowboarding this weekend, as I don’t need any broken bones, so I’ll be there. With a digital cam as well. Sans husband, who does seem to want busted ribs, but I can’t have it all…
Ferrous, it’d be fun to have yer kid around! And I’m glad you’re back, as you’re the first (and only) doper I’ve met in person.
I’d also be glad to pick up anyone at the train station - here or vancouver, as I’m right near the freeway.
Seems like we have a pretty good head count - I’m looking forward to it!
KKB and I also have digital cameras. I was going to bring mine anyway. Who knows what cool photographable things we’ll see along the way?
Lookin’ forward to meeting everybody, kids and SOs included.
Ferrous, by all means bring the Ferrousling! I brought Son Of Czarcasm to a Dopefest once, and the damage to his tender psyche turned out to be only slightly traumatic, but temporary.
Bump.
Would anyone be willing to give KKB and I a ride from the Portland Greyhound station to the 'fest? Mapquest says it’s about 7 miles east from St. John’s.
You’d have our eternal gratitude, and we promise to read every post of yours from now on.
Anyone?
What time will you get in?
Actually, now that I’ve talked to the roomie, we may not need a ride. We’ll probably take an early bus in. There are two we could take; one will get us to Portland just after noon, the other at 3:15pm. Rather than take the second bus and have someone pick us up and have all three of us be at least 15 minutes late to the 'fest, we decided we’ll take the early bus and spend the two and a half hours exploring the area. I figure we’ll wander in the direction of St. John’s and meet you guys there.
Should be fun, as it’s our first time in Portland.
We plan on taking an Amtrak back, and it leaves at 6:15pm. So we may have to leave mid-party. Nevertheless, we’re down for this.
You folks got me excited for a minute until I realized you weren’t talking about Portland Maine (a place I am rather fond of & travel thru several times a year).
Portland has a really good public transportation system. There are actually 3 bus lines that run from downtown to within a few blocks of the pub (#'s 4, 17 & 40…actually #16 also, but it doesn’t run on weekends). Let me know if you need some help navigating.
Be aware, though, that it takes around 30 minutes to get here from there.
Don’t forget the #75, which also goes down Lombard to the St. Johns area.
Right, but the #75 is a cross-town, and doesn’t run through downtown, so I didn’t think it would be useful. Unless they wan’t to go check out the Hawthorne district, which is a fun thing to do.
Tomorrow it is
As it turns out, KKB and I will be driving down (alternating control of the wheel and pedals) tomorrow. Woo hoo! Thank you for bus route info, though.
We’ll still leave around 8am, and get into Portland around 11am, which will leave us plenty of time to explore the area. I got a Portland map, so the odds should be against us getting lost. :knocks wood: Mapquest, fortunately, is our friend.
I have St. John’s phone number written down, but if you guys want to exchange cell phone numbers (just in case), e-mail me… but before 8am.
I think that’s about it. Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
If you get lost in St. Johns, just look for the dome.
Be seeing you.
Some more landmarks: It’s 1 block south of the James John Elementary School (big brick building with fenced playground), and across the street from Blockbuster Video. It’s a two-story light green building with, as the Czar says, a dome on top.
See y’all soon.
