Is there a way to tell if a poster has you on Ignore?

I mean other than just never responding. ('Cause if that’s the case, I just might be here all by myself…)

Nope, it’s that way by design of the message board software.

What if you just viewed threads without logging in and used a different computer?

As I understand it, no.

BTW: Who are you?

Telemark, Mr. Nylock, hey. How you guys doin?

That tells you nothing about if they’ve got you on ignore. You can see their posts no matter how you log in.

If somebody asked a question, and you answered it, and then somebody comes right in after you and says “I see nobody’s answered this, so…”

Then again, some people don’t read the thread before they answer questions.

Or, in a Pit thread, you could really burn somebody and if they don’t respond, either they didn’t see it, they’re too upset to answer, or they think you’re beneath their notice even though they haven’t put you on Ignore. Or maybe they have. Hard to tell.

Yeah, you’re right, my answer makes no sense. I have never used the ignore function; the one time I tried to put someone on ignore,it wouldn’t work.

You could log in as them and see if you see yourself.

Pit them and see if they respond to the thread.

Do the post #s change? For example, if someone said in post # blah blah happened, but the number and what happened did not correspond, would that indicate that a poster has people on ignore? That would not necessarily indicate who is on ignore unless you had a unique number of posts that matched the post count discrepancy; but even then you can’t be 100% certain.

Hey Foggy, long time no see. I’m glad you are still around.

I don’t have anyone on Ignore, but I believe when you see a post from someone you are Ignoring it doesn’t disappear - it apppears empty with a message inside it that says something like “This poster is on your Ignore List” with a link to click if you want to see the post anyway. But AFAIK the post numbering doesn’t change.

The bottom line is that there is no easy way to tell if someone is Ignoring you, unless someone tells you. And that is only legal in the Pit.

And really, why should I care who is Ignoring me? I just interpret it as getting the last word.

I assume everyone has me on ignore, simplifies the whole process.

If ignorance is ignored how can it be fought?

No, the post numbers don’t change. If you have someone on ignore you see a message saying “This poster is on your ignore list” but the post numbers all stay the same. Again, by design, you don’t want the person you are ignoring to know that you’re ignoring them - it would defeat one of the main purposes of the Ignore List.

Ha! All good replies (which I will Ignore.) :stuck_out_tongue: It’s not that I think a specific poster has…it’s that some usernames have the green dot but the name is a faded gray. I wondered if that was a sign.

That has to do with if the poster is online or not, or if the poster had their online status set to invisible.

HEre’s a somewhat recent thread about it: Does this board have an "X is online now" feature I wasn't aware of? - About This Message Board - Straight Dope Message Board

Won’t work if you’re a vampire.

The green dot means they’re online. The faded grey is just the visited link colour. I’ve just viewed your profile page and now your name appears in grey instead of blue.
