Is there no NHL playoffs thread? {2024}

It may be a little late to mention this but the game is on CBC…

ESPN+ has it and is super cheap if you bundle it.

I’ve got my choice of four channels broadcasting the game: CBC, Sportsnet, City, and an ABC affiliate from the US.

I’m watching Sportsnet, which is the CBC broadcast anyway.

Everyone in Canada gets CBC, it’s the national broadcaster and it’s part of the base-level cable package that the previous government mandated into existence:

(I used to work at the cable company)

Wow. A stretch of damn near 6 minutes without a whistle, mostly dominated by the Oilers, ends with a Florida goal.

2-1 Panthers, 4 minutes left in the second.

I don’t have cable.

Hockey. A high sticking penalty starts at 2 minutes in the box. But if the guy you fouled is actually bleeding as a result, well, that’s 5 minutes.

Panthers win it. Fun series, disappointing ending.

Well that was a shameful display from Edmonton after what had been the best rally in 80 years. Luongo somehow managed to transfer the Curse of the Blue Uniforms to the Oilers.

No Stanley Cup for Canada this year. Well, that’s okay, it just means the Canucks will have to bring it home next year. Right? Right…

That’s too bad. But Edmonton played crap. They were sluggish and played like they did the first three games. Ah well. Still happy for the Florida guys.

Edmonton has nothing to be ashamed of for making the Series as close as it could possibly be. Thank you Edmonton! The Oilers played good hockey in Game Seven. Lots of pressure, lots of shots, but unfortunately the good Bobrovsky showed up tonight.

The only thing the Oilers could have done much better was staying in the slot for passes and to screen the goalie. The referee was not inclined to call much when they were strong armed out of position. Of course, McDavid could have had four points again, but will have to settle for the Smythe.

The only criticism I have for the Oilers would have been to pull Skinner earlier. At 4 minutes to go, you’ve got nothing to lose. You either tie or you lose by more than one goal. You’ve been leaning on your stars for the whole third period, no reason to not give the less stellar players a chance with the man advantage while your stars rest for a minute. If the lesser players can put on some pressure with the advantage but not score, then maybe your stars can make that final push.

Oh well, at least they brought it to a Game 7, and I thank them for that.

I might have been in favour of pulling the goalie earlier under other circumstances. As it was, they could barely advance the puck with six men, and so pulling the goalie was a liability. If going to do it you need all your guns blazing, you can’t concentrate on defence.

Intermissions. Thanks @Spoons , I’ll try to remember that.

The Oilers were gassed at the end. Pulling Skinner earlier may have helped.

But to my non-hockey eyeballs the Panther defense controlled this game and, more specifically, controlled Draisaitl tonight. And not just tonight, but the entire series overall. Yeah they flopped in the last 3 games, but overall in 7 games they were defense strong. I don’t know how they did that, I don’t know this game that well, but that’s what I think was a key to their championship.

And Connor McDavid wins the Conn Smythe Trophy. Amazing.

Congratulations to Florida.

And Matthew Tkachuk and Jayson Tatum were friends since high school? They both have their first championships now. They’re going to have some great celebrations together this offseason.

If you draw blood, it’s a double minor (as long as four minutes), not a five minute major.

I’ve never seen a team play so gassed after they pulled the goalie. The coach went to his top players for too long in the third and they had nothing left at the end.

Neither do I, but depending on where you live it’s amazing what you can pick up over the air with something like this.

Except I hate the Canucks – certainly not with the same loathing that I have for the Leafs, but still, I was really rooting for Edmonton.

@FloatyGimpy , I’m just learning this game. If you were watching Draisaitl do you think the Panthers did anything specific to take him out of his game? And not just in game 7 but in the series? Or anyone else, what do you think?

The Oilers lost for more reasons than Draisaitl‘s lack of goals, but I think (again, to this casual observer’s non-hockey eyeballs) this is one of the bigger reasons.

Draisaitl is an amazing player. He looked defeated last night before the game even started. He was definitely off last night, but I don’t know why. Maybe the pressure just got to him. I follow his career specifically because I watched him sign his first contract and it’s been quite the journey for him.

The Panthers deserved to win last night. They played a (slightly) better game.

I am from Vancouver Island and a life-long super Canucks fan. Even though Edmonton bumped Vancouver I still have to root for them. When Luongo was cheering on the Panthers I was yelling “traitor!” at my TV. lol.
