It’s cooled off significantly with the approaching rain. I’ve shut off Coolio for now (my electric bill is about to jump anyway!) and have the windows open to catch the breeze/wind.
The handyman took down a $%!# screen door that - long story - couldn’t open all the way. So today, I re-hung my magnetic curtain screen (someone here mentioned theirs & reminded me) and the cats are happily letting themselves in & out as desired.
Oh, and my bleeding heart bloomed! Such a tiny blossom, but it made me super excited. Can’t grow them down in the heat of Texas, so I never had one before.
Phone call and several FB messages this afternoon to say my second-oldest (56) niece died this morning – heart failure whilst being intubated at the ER for breathing difficulty.
I’m glad that your ER trip didn’t reveal a blood clot baker.
{{{bumba and vinnie}}}
You have my sympathy for your niece’s passing herald.
I went to irk a bit early so’s I could duck out at the normal time (sound effed up?) today. Nelson had a checkup at 4:45 and we didn’t get out until a little after six. He did meet a sweet Newfie in the lobby and they both went into play stance, so it wasn’t totally traumatic for him. After I dropped him at home, I went to CVS / Tar-jay to pick up a prescription (I had used the last of it, so I had to pick it up today). I did ask if they did curbside pick up with the Tar-jay app and told her why. She said that the store didn’t usually say anything about small dogs in the store as long as they stayed in the cart or your arms and behaved. I will remember that the next time.
lucky you …I had to spend a week in the er with my legs up in the air due to swelling …im told the nurses weren’t happy because of the hospital gown i was in because i couldn’t wear pants … but i think that was exaggerated a bit …
Well the furnace is back on because I’m told it might be 105 F by Monday which is inline with our weather normally …
The gym replaced the “masks required” sign with one saying unvaccinated people must wear masks. I must confess, I was able to work out harder without the mask than I was able to do with it, but that’s because I’m a wimp.
Herald, I’m sorrier than I can say about your niece. What a terrible tragedy for you and your family. Naturally you didn’t celebrate your birthday, but I’m still grateful you were born.
baker, that’s not good. Sorry you’re going through that. My sister had cellulitis, and while she downplayed it, I found out it’s actually quite serious and unpleasant. I hope you heal promptly. You’re beloved around here.
shoe, yay for cooler weather.
FCM, you got me hankering for ribs, and none are available. I shall live vicariously.
Uh-oh. I found some vanilla orchid body butter a friend gave me a couple years ago and decided to schmear some on (not a bagle–Scrubs joke) after a shower. Now I smell like I work in a brothel…if WalMart had brothels…or KMart had red light specials.
Your 3, my 2am update. Dampish all day here, edging onto muggy. Boo hates muggy, yes, she does. Verily she does. She would rather smell like a vanilla bagle* in Wally World than be muggy.
*bagle. Is that like a sturdy purse-shaped bread meant for a schmear and lox? Like the ones where if you’ve eaten one warm on a street corner in NewYork nothing is ever as good again?
As expected, I woke before my alarm, in anticipation of the plumber’s arrival. With luck, he’ll be done and gone before Roxy gets here.
Today’s supposed to be another hot one - low 90s and chance of t-storms this afternoon. We’ll see how that plays out. Supper will be some version of leftovers - probably involving the remains of steak (I made way too much.)
And after Roxy goes home, I need to clear as much as I can out of the basement for the floor guys tomorrow. FCD is obsessed about having the entire space empty, but I’ll be leaving the 3 biggest pieces because I can’t move them, there’s no place to put them, and I’m sure flooring installers are used to dealing with furnishings. I’ll also sweep up the worst of the crud - and vacuum as necessary. Can’t wait to have this project done.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 66 Amurrkin out and N.O.S. with a predicted high of 95 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. I have a cold. ICK! Thus I am a serious snot machine, among other things. Today we lay in provisions, Well, OYKW shall do that. I shall betake my germified self over to the church house to deal with church janitor Junior Warden duties which shall include makin’ sure the thermostats in church proper are all set to their proper coolin’ temps and so forth. Me and my trusty manual shall take care of that. I have no idea what sup might be. I foresee chikin noodle soup for myself. I shall survive, however.
{{{CupCakes}}} sibs can be a big PITA, but good on your sis for insistin’ you get checked out. Hope you feel better soonest.
{{{Bumba and Vinnie}}} hope the little fella is better today,
{{{Herald}}} so sorry about your niece!
Everyone else, yays, boos, hugs, trouts, chitlins, noogies, and how you doin’s all round, as needed.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, well, we shall see what the day holds forth. Rah.
Bumba, it’s just heartbreaking watching our furry friends slow down, especially knowing they can’t tell us where they hurt. I went through it with Cap’n (whom I still fiercely miss), my sweet Brandi (still forget and call her out her name), and now Polar is really slowing down. The juxtaposition of the wild and crazy behavior to now is just jarring.
Another wild and crazy workday awaits. I have meetings (always meetings), and much work to accomplish.
On Monday after work, my husband and I picked up a bird feeding station, three different types of feeders, and a hanging water dish and set it up. I was fulling expecting that it would take a bit of time before the birds came to visit, but they have been coming in droves. I’ve seen mainly chickadees and dark-eyed juncoes, although I’ve also seen some house finches and song sparrows. There is also the occasional crow who swoops in for some suet. I don’t really want crows at the station, but not much I can do. Crows are abundant around here. I plan to put some plants and shrubs around the station that will attract more birds and give them hiding places if they feel threatened. At any rate, it’s been fun watching the birds and provided some respite to yesterday’s work silliness.
Good Morning all. Treated the boy’s soccer team to ice cream last night (mostly it was an excuse for me getting some) and doing the same for the girls tonight. However, weather is due to be tunder-boomers, so we might have to postpone this to Thorsday.
{{{Herald}}}, my condolences for your loss.
Taters, sounds like the bird feeder is a hit among the local Avian community.
nellie, never used body butter before…after your description, don;t think I’ll be buying any in the future, either…
{{Baker}}, hope you get feeling better…good on sis for taking you in.
FCM, between the plumber today and the floor people tomorrow, sounds like a busy week.
To the rest of all y’all, best wishes, hopes, hugs and giggles where appropriate…need to start doing things so I can post in the afternoon/evenings…
It’s so humid today it feels like I’m breathing under water. Summer has arrived.
My sister is going into the office for the first time today and her husband is…not taking it well. He’s been calling me all evening and all morning. I haven’t picked up yet - evening is reserved for my husband & kids and I put my phone away and check it once before bed in case an emergency arises. I also work during the day and he does not. I guess I should bite the bullet and call the guy in between meetings. Maybe it’ll take some of the heat off my sister.
Anyway, it suddenly got sunny, which means it’ll probably get steamier, but it’s supposed to storm tonight, which will be lovely. I nearly murdered my baby blackberry plant. I didn’t have quite enough soil for it, so I planned to let it sit for the week until I could grab some and plant it in the yard along with the firecracker plant I have; well, that was a mistake. Blackberries need quite a bit of space to stretch out and they don’t like having their roots squished for long. I wound up triaging it in a very large pot that was about 2/3 full of soil until it recovers and I get dirt to replant. It already looks happier. I can’t wait to repot my firecracker, too. It still looks gorgeous and healthy but I’m trying not to assume it’ll be fine. 'Cause we all know where that got me.
The plumber said from the looks of the label, our water heater is the one installed when the house was built in 1975!!! I’m amazed and impressed. But we’re having it replaced on Tuesday. It’s a Rheem, in case you’re curious, and that’s what our plumber sells.
If we get half that many years, it will likely outlive me…
Today should be interesting. This afternoon is try-outs for Senior Speaker at graduation and I’m training the person who will be Speech Coach next year in the art of looking interested while listening to a speech you’ve heard, let’s see…35 years…roughly 8 kids per year trying out…minus the good ones…250 times before. Ought to be fun to watch, in any case. For the first time in years none of my Speech kids are auditioning.
Something(s) is/are eating the leaves on my sunflowers. Diatomaceous earth and eco-spray haven’t stopped them yet. Time to break out the big guns. I hope everybody has a wonderful Wednesday!
Did the usual bouncing around. Took Gordie out for his walk, and offered to fight the neighbor’s new puppy. It’s 90 here, but between the new windows and the weatherstripping I put on the door, it’s cool with minimal A/C uses.
We skipped right over Spring and went straight to Summer. To be honest, I’m not sure Summer ever stopped this year. We’re not to the 100’s yet, but we’ll get there soon. A hearty fuck you to climate change. I can’t wait until we can get the hell outta here.
@GuanoLad Congrats on the weight loss! I’ve lost about 70 pounds now and need to do more. I do notice that I can move around easier and even sleep better. My goal is to get to a “healthy” BMI before the MS really kicks in. I figure that being as active as possible will help with disease progression (at least debilitation). There are also things I really want to do while I can (like riding again).
@peedin I’m with you. I’ve had the AC on since the temps started reaching 75.
@SCAdian I am so sorry about your niece. My condolences to you and to her loved ones.
@Bumbazine About Vinnie, if you think it’s arthritis, your vet can prescribe something that might help. My older Newfie was taking gabapentin for a while. {{{hugs}}} It’s hard when pets get old.
We’re mostly vaccinated now. My son needs one more shot and then we’re done.
I just broke a tooth, up front naturally. I grind my teeth loud enough to wake up my husband and the damage is accumulating. I’ve got a temporary crown and will get a permanent one soon. Definitely an expense that I could have done without.
The MS seems to be progressing, but so far it’s not too bad. It also seems to be the version that comes and goes, which is good. Much better prognosis overall - I’ll take it!
I think we’re going to do the Antartica cruise this year. It’s 3 weeks, with stops up and down South America, as well as the jog over to Antartica. Once I do this, I’ll only have Australia left to visit in order to have been to every continent.
Thanks, everybody for your well-wishes for Vinnie. It is very hard to see our sweet happy boy get old. He’s doing much better today. Yesterday might have just been a bad day. Maybe he slept wrong. We are giving him supplements for his arthritis, and they do work.
BatBoy and Sunny, conga rats on the weight loss. I lost 65 pounds a few years ago on the atkins diet. My PCP was aghast and told me not to do that again. Too bad, 'cause it’s the only thing that ever worked for me.
Scadian, my condolences.
Baker, ouch! Feel better soonest.
Wordy, you actually plant blackberries? Around here we’re usually trying to get rid of them.
Also, what does BIL think you should do about Sis going to the office? That’s truly bizarre.
I fell again this morning, going down the back steps. Grabbed the screen door spring to break my fall. Now I’ve gotta go get a new spring. Also cut my finger open. I’m getting really tired of this.
