I live in Maryland now! It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, since I only crossed the border yesterday, but the paper stapled into my passport means I can work here for a year. And since I can renew it every year and there’s not much chance of them refusing me a renewal, I suppose my move is pretty permanent. For a first move away from home, that’s a hell of a step! Worth it, though… just scary as hell.
So I’ve left Montreal behind, and I’m an alien. I have to work on blending in - I think my eh is showing.
You are absolutely the sweetest thing ever, you know that?
Give me a while to get settled - I’m living out of boxes at my boyfriend’s place until I can find an apartment. But I’m here!! I’m so looking forward to meeting some Maryland Dopers (and expat Canucks, if you’ve got 'em), as soon as I can find a little place to call home, and get past the first couple of weeks with the flurry of paperwork and learning the new job.
Maybe early April?
Figaro - I’m in the Baltimore area.
I can’t believe how springy it is here - going from snowbanks to almost-budding trees in one twelve-hour drive is sort of a shock. I’ll be sending home pictures of early flowers, just to make my mom jealous. I had to dig through my things to find a lighter jacket, because I feel a little overdressed in my down coat!
(that’s local “Bawlamorese” for “Welcome to Baltimore” see here: Hon - Everything2.com).
I work in northwest Baltimore and used to live in Baltimore for a while, but I live in PA now. I’m a daily visitor.
Enjoy the crab cakes. Check out the inner harbor. If you need more advice on things to do, just ask. There’s plenty of Baltimorons (er, Baltimoreans) on the SDMB. You’re one of the MADs (Mid Atlantic Dopers) now. Sounds like Ginger won’t let you get off to a bad start no matter what.
Welcome to Baltimore!
We’re a friendly bunch. Just don’t believe Gingy when she tries to drag you to yoga on the premise that it’s ‘fun.’ It’s sheer torture.
You know, we’re the model for religious freedom in the USA. We were a colony of - well, not sure I should say it, but - Catholics! They founding fathers had to accomodate us somehow…
Welcome as well. Don’t miss the Maryland Rennaisance Festival this fall! Oh, and after 15 or so years here, I still am not used to the muggy, muggy summers. But that’s what the pool, A/C and cold beer are for.
And for cold beer, nothing beats the Baltimoron treat… Natty Boh!*
Welcome to the neighborhood, Antigen. If I remember correctly from a previous thread, you’re right up the road from me. (Checking subscribed threads… Yup.) If you want to see a redneck nightclub, Cancun Cantina is quite close. And I swear Glen Burnie has the highest concentration of bowling alleys in the entire country. Both tenpin and (what should be Maryland’s state sport) duckpin.
*You’ll never get me to touch that swill, but I have a friend who is just emerging from poor college student status that swears by it as a drinkable dirt cheap beer. I take his word on that.
