Without actually seeing the questions, Bosporus, Lincoln, and Holder?
It was “Mother city of Georgia,” which is Savannah.
Heh. Well then I was wrong twice! Hopefully they don’t read this board…
Crap, I was thinking, “There’s gotta be another city in Georgia that I can remember”…all I could come up with was Macon. I was trying to think of Athens GA (Home of the B-52s) , but couldn’t. Oh well, that woulda been wrong as well.
The Goodwin question was Lincoln.
The straits in Turkey are the Bosporus.
Laertes father is Polonius.
I can’t believe I flat out didn’t know the name of Obama’s AG pick. I guess now that the election is over I’m not obsessively reading the blogs anymore.
And I totally screwed the Georgia O’Keefe question. I knew it was the one who does all the flowers and vaginas and such, but totally blanked on the actual name under time pressure.
I didn’t get the Georgia question right. I got all the other ones mentioned so far, including the one that seemed to stump a lot of people who have posted about Eric Holder.
I got 39. Not nearly as good as I was hoping for.
According to the list of answers, I got a lousy 34.
I said “gigolo” instead of “gold digger,” said Atlas Shrugged instead of The Fountainhead, thought the designer was Ralph Ellis, not Perry. Never mind the ones I flat out didn’t know. My only successful guess was Savannah.
Gah, so close. The East Coast test was better for me, I think. ![]()
According to the list of answers I missed 11, which makes 39 right. Oh, well.
Heh, me too.
I missed 6 - not too bad!
Joe
If I had waited until tomorrow night instead of Wednesday, I would have gotten about the same…maybe one better.
Just curious…do you recall how many correct answers you got on the online test? I’m sure my 34 fell far short.
Well that was by far the best I’ve done on these. With a few lucky guesses (talc, O’Keefe, Finland), a few last-gasp correct answers (Mailer, Punic, Finland) and assuming some close/mistyped answers count (Frank Baum instead of L. Frank Baum and Kicman instead of Kidman) I got 44. And I really have no excuse for missing Whitman and Joshua except nerves.
The “pop culture” ones were way easier than they sometimes are (Desperate Housewives, Enrique Iglesias, Nicole Kidman) and the sports one was a gimme for NFL fans (Patriots undefeated).
I guess this is my best chance for a call, so fingers crossed…
Sorry I’m late to the party, but I took the Tuesday exam. Under somewhat odd conditions (I was at a conference in Philadelphia, and took it at a Kinko’s for 25 cents/minute) I got either a 37 or 38, depending on if they count “Charles” for the Bonnie Prince question.
Woohoo! I knew I passed the test. I just got the e-mail, I have a local tryout in Boston on April 21st.
And a reminder (to myself, at least) to watch for BethCro in a couple weeks.
I got an email a little while ago, too. Is there a Straight Dope password so we know which people there are Dopers?
We could do that finger-on-the-side-of-the-nose thing from The Sting. Or will it be late enough in the year to wear my spectators?
Well, I can just look for the guy (gal?) who has a robot arm. Alas, I am not actually a kitten, but I am a Kat (nickname for Kathryn that I sometimes go by).
I’m about as mechanical as you are feline.
Congratulations, guys. Hope you pass the tryouts and win big.
