Joan Rivers has died [updated thread title]

What a bummer. We have lost one of the Great Ones. Alas, poor Joan. Alas, ourselves. :frowning:

I remember she said she was so shallow her grave would be three feet deep.

I also remember when she guest-hosted the Tonight Show and her opening monologues were hysterical. One line had me in stitches: “I went to get my breasts examined and the doctor told me to take off my socks.”

RIP Joan.

Lewis Black said it best…“The silence is deafening.”

Oh dear. I enjoy her on Fashion Police because she is biting toward others but also toward herself. I like that she got another run at it after not being able to get jobs – the documentary was very good. I wish she had stuck to her original face but again, at least she could make fun of it. RIP.

I liked her a lot in the early going and came to detest her in recent years. When she was funny, she was hysterical; when she wasn’t, she was just plain mean. But in all cases, she was a major ground-breaker for female comics and I respect her for that. RIP

RIP, Joan. May God be a plastic surgeon.

RIP. A great talent, man could she roast on other celebs! And she only got sassier as she aged.

She’ll be missed.

Aw, Dot Matrix is permanently offline.

Oh my god, Joan, it’s gonna be so hard to not have your acerbic, push-push-push-shove not be there any longer. I will miss you more than I can bear to think about right now.

Give Carson a kick in the nuts for me, willya? RIP, sweet lady.

She’ll be with us for many years to come, seeing as how a significant portion of her body was non-biodegradable.

And Gilbert Gottfried has tweeted about it.

“First Robin. Now Joan. The world just became a less funny place. RIP Joan Rivers.”

I guess he decided to refrain on the joke for a few hours. I hope it’s a good one, but he is sure right the world is less funnier without Robin Williams and Joan Rivers.

Virtually every comic I follow on twitter has commented on it.

Patton Oswalt:

Goodbye, Joan. You deserved a louder death.

She was born in the wrong country. If she’d been born in Germany, she’d have made 'em laugh all the way to the gas chamber.

I liked Joan Rivers. The first time I ever saw her on The Tonight Show (early 1980s?) she was hilarious. Johnny was absolutely laughing as hard as he could while she was on the couch. I had tears in my eyes.

No, she was a great comedian.

Jesus, Michael.

I too look forward to Meryl Streep crying in 5 different accents at what I’m sure will be a lovely service at the LA Municipal Recycling Plant. RIP Joan; you did what you loved right up until the end, then dropped dead w/o a long decline into dementia & fraility.

Yeah, she would have hated getting old and slowing down. Sleep well, Joan.

I recall some of her stuff, pre-80s, and it was really, really good stuff.
IIRC, she had newspaper/editorial columns in the 70s. Always funny. Always.
I also thought that she was hot, physically, even towards the end, and I was all for her plastic surgery.
Most importantly, tho, I loved the way she didn’t back down on her Holocaust joke. Whereas Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell would cave in to political pressure, for their statements, on something that they believed, Joan Rivers gave an “Oh, please…!” response.

I do so hope that she’s cremated. I’m racking my brains trying to cook up a zinger as we speak.

I went to school with Melissa in Jr High and High School and had the pleasure of knowing Joan. She was gracious, and charming, and lovely. She went out of her way to make time for her daughter’s classmates, and was not snide or rude, no matter how her public persona appeared.

I lost touch with Melissa years ago. I am reaching out to mutual friends to try and pay my respects.

I am sad today.
