I just acquired the entire series of “Are You Afraid Of The Dark,” Nickelodon’s sometimes terrifying and usually hilarious and always extremely entertaining show from the 90s. Holy shit…I can’t wait to watch it. (Well, I can, or else I’d be watching it now.) But when I do watch it, it’s going to be awesome.
My favorite episode was probably the one where the kid gets a magic potion that makes him more confident and better-looking, but eventually turns him into a werewolf. (I think it’s called The Tale of the Dream Girl." What are your favorite episodes?
I like the one- oh man this is going to be vague- but it’s got the really bossy girl who ends up talking the monster’s ear off at the end (the actress later showed up in Harriet the Spy as, well, the bossy girl).
The one with the Nosferatu. IIRC< they actually used clips from the original movie and did a cool effect with the vampire coming out/going into the screen.
I remember that show. I don’t know why, but the one with the comic-book evil clown (the one where people kept drooling blue goo) really, really creeped the bejezus out of me when I was little. The ghastly giggler or something like that, right?
Oh God, that one traumatized me. A few days after I saw it, my brother acquired some candy that made his mouth turn blue and scared the piss out of me with it.
Oh, did I LOVE that show when it was on. My favorites:
-The prom queen one, with the ghost car under the water
-The haunted swimming pool
-the one with the little ghost girl who lived in the mirror
-the one where these two cousins were staying on their grandparents’ horse farm, and the ghost of their deceased aunt was haunting the place
-“Fear Soup”, with the recurring Dr. Vink, who looked like Hagrid, who tortured his workers to make his soup.
-the one at Girl Scout Camp, with the ghosts of these long lost campers who turned into witches
-The one with the woman who was obsessed with staying young and beautiful, and would kill young girls for an elixir of life
-the one about the paintings, where a woman would trap her students into their own paintings.
-I remember being scared sitting through the smoking clown one.
-The boarding school with the aliens and eggs
-The one with the house of mirrors
-The typewriter that makes whatever it writes happen
-Oh wait. Does anyone remember the phantom cab? “I’m not a loony!”
Oh man… I loved that show. It was on around the time I was really into ghost stories too. I spent a couple of years perpetually creeped out, in part from that show and in part from the Scary Story books…
The Guide Camp one really freaked me out (being a Guide at all…) and the one with the boy who’s brother had drowned in the dam(?) and he saved a kid later having ridden his brother’s absolutely wrecked bike to the same place. That one was kinda creepy.
-When the boy’s family moves into his deceased uncle’s home, and finds a monster in the basement. Then he feeds a neighborhood bully to the monster, and it starts giving him money.
-The haunted locker one, with the hippie ghost.
-The one where they did Sleepy Hollow
-The one with the ancient mummy in the museum (I think she ends up coming back to life and dating the girl’s father)
-The vacant lot one, where this girl starts getting all this stuff from a mysterious woman, only she starts looking like a freak
The one I remember the most that hasn’t been mentioned here was the one with the sandman. I don’t remember much more about it though. I think there was also one in the library.
I remember Salute Your Shorts. Two other shows that I remember from when I was really young are You Can’t Do That On Television and Welcome Freshman. I don’t remember anything about them though.
The library one was with this old ghost of a librarian who stole children’s voices because she wanted absolute quiet, or something like that. Then she trapped them in an abandoned room or whatever.
Salute Your Shorts! I loved that one! “Camp Onawana, we hold you in our hearts…”
Seriously, iirc you toss tang onto a fire and it flares up exactly like that. Or it may have been something else, but I recall it was something you could easily buy at the grocery store.
