Justified, Season Five starts tonight!

Okay, who was playing the DEA agent in this latest episode? I can’t find it anywhere I’ve searched. At first I thought it was an aging Tom Berenger.

Are you referring to Eric Roberts’ character?

Ha! Having watched the latest Hawaii 5-0, I can assure you that an aging Tom Berenger doesn’t look anywhere near as good as an aging Eric Roberts.

Yeah, that’s the guy. I’ve seen him in other things, but couldn’t come up with a name.

Best line of the last ep: “Would you call this a herd, a gaggle, or a flock of assholes?”

I am not sure all that money actually got spent though. When his shipment was hijacked, should we assume he paid in advance? The money to kill the sheriff was more a promise to the assassin’s family, istm, not a big lump sum paid on the day of the killing.

And though he sold the whorehouse, his man there was taking a massive skim of the profits afterwards. Whether the Canadians were taking the last of his money, I don’t recall.

Ava’s story line is beginning to resemble The Perils of Pauline. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Has she had any kind of trial yet? She was initially in jail for killing Delroy. I don’t recall a trial. Then the faked attack on the guard. Why is she in a full-fledged women’s prison instead of a county jail?

They are kind of ladling it on, aren’t they? Combine that with the continuing misfortunes of the snake-bit Boyd Crowder these past couple of seasons ( so close! then failure again  ), it is starting to weaken the series just a tad. Granted a Crowder success presents its own potential set of storytelling issues - I’m sure the writers prefer him scheming from below rather than sitting back content in his mansion. Still, it is starting to verge on the farcical.

That said…

…this doesn’t bother me at all. Capital cases can sometimes take an awful long time to wind their way to a trial. Apparently 1- 3 years of pre-trial maneuvering is not uncommon.

This one I’m also semi-okay with. I can fan-wank this without much strain as a move from a medium-security county lockup to a maximum-security prison after an attempted assault on a guard.

Just to continue that train of thought, what bugs me more about the Ava storyline is the continual parade of stuff like vindictive-I’m-willing-to-be-assassinated-to-get-even-molester-guard and beat-on-race-traitor-convict-gal and give-me-a-blowjob-if-you-want-to-be-a-drug mule-guard and better-get-me-that-heroin-prison-priestess. I mean, come on. It’s all a little too much, though fitting in well with that awesome Boyd Crowder luck :p.

This season so far has been my least favorite.
As mentioned above… the Ava stuff. Ugh just get her out of jail already. It’s not interesting.
Also, I don’t like a world crosses over the line, doesn’t see his kid, and isn’t the darling of the Marshall’s office. I want a Raylan that is close to crossing the line, but is still a respectable hard working US Marshall that wants to see his kid; and still has the respect of Art. It’s like he demons are getting the best of him. No one freaking likes him at all. I was hoping he’d take a look at the DEA agent played by Eric Roberts to see a picture of his life… drinking on the job, shooting people a little prematurely, lonely, etc.

I don’t understand the Ava stuff. Just because the one payoff for protection didn’t work out (with the neo-Nazi), I don’t see why they didn’t try with other women and their boyfriends/husbands. Likewise why couldn’t she just have asked to be in administrative segregation after she was attacked? In her situation the last thing I would do would be to participate in any criminal activity in prison–too easy for things to go wrong in a world you don’t have any control in.

Isn’t that still in play? I mean, the title of the episode, “Wrong Roads,” might refer to a number of things. But surely we’re meant to assume that Raylan will be looking at Miller’s life, pondering the road he’s currently on (metaphorically speaking), and considering the parallels.

And given this show’s track record, I’m not sure we should assume that Dewey’s flooring it killed Miller.

One of the writers recently said, if you don’t see him shot in the head, or a doctor pronouncing him dead, then don’t assume a character is dead.

Miller isn’t dead. Raylan will address his condition in the next episode according to post mortem. He is “injured and hospitalized, but fine.”

Can someone explain why the social worker needs protection?

There’s been way too much silly this season, way too many players being in just the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time.

Boyd just lets the prison guard go. Well of course, because he should have known it wouldn’t work anyway. The guard might have been amenable to a pay-off but Boyd didn’t offer one.

Patty the Daytime Hooker – is her brain so fried that she couldn’t see Ava was sincere?

Wendy picks a fight with Daryl instead of just packing Kendall up and leaving.

And now we have Mary Steenburgen called in by Wynn Duffy to work some kind of voodoo magic so Wynn will know who to side with. What!?!

I’ll be glad when this season is over, and it won’t be one I’ll rewatch.

Best episode ever. Wynn wants Steenburgen’s muscle, he is letting her decide which side their new partnership will be joining.

OK, I’ve lost hope for this season. Timothy Olyphant seems like a guest star in his own series. What the hell? Quit muddying up the waters with so many side stories. Ava should have been out of jail episodes ago. To be honest, I was hoping she’d get killed tonight, because that would at least be the end of the prison story.

Kendall will kill Daryl Crowe Jr.

That certainly seems the direction things are heading, but my wife and I hope it doesn’t go there. They’ve done misdirection in the past.

I agree, the Ava story is way too much and way too uninteresting. There have been plenty of troubles-in-prisons shows, we don’t need yet another one. They need to get back to Rayland and what makes the show interesting. Too many subplots with too many people we don’t care about. Daryl isn’t a villain, doesn’t hold a candle to the past big-bads, he’s just another stupid jerk, not much different from the others we’ve seen as minor characters on the show.

I wonder if Dewey will make it through the season, though; he’s great comic whatchacallit.

I laughed loud and long at Danny’s death. Falling into the hole for his dog’s grave, and then Raylan leaning over him saying (paraphrased, because my memory isn’t great): “I’m sorry, Danny. I’d’a warned ya, but I didn’t see it myself.” Priceless.

And then the scene with Art right after that was just fantastic.

I agree that Raylan is basically a bit player right now, which is affecting the show negatively.

Fully agree the Ava story is boring. She was never that strong of a character to begin with so I really don’t care about her an iota.

Raylan does seem to be almost a minor character of late - but the show still has some fun moments and the action never stops. Will be sorry to see the show end after next season.

Soooooo hope that Dewey survives. The bit in the car while talking with Boyd on the phone was hilarious.
