A friend of mine is flying to London in a couple of days, doing the tourist thing based around going primarily to see the show. Can’t wait to hear all about it.
I knew about her way back in 1980 since I got her album as a gift. I think I gave it away. Her voice is very good, just not my cup of tea.
The first concert got raves in the NYTimes. Sorry I can’t link to it in front of a paywall.
CNN article I posted has links to reviews in British papers.
In the early 80’s, Simon and Nick from Duran Duran were guest VJs on MTV, and guest VJs got to choose the videos. One was Sat In Your Lap and it was the weirdest fucking thing I had ever seen in my thirteen years*. "I don’t … THINK those are supposed to be Klansmen … " is not a statement I’ve made about any video either before or since.
Not long after, I saw her Live at the Hammersmith Odeon concert on USA Network’s Night Flight … and not long after that a friend got me Hounds of Love for my birthday. Been a fan ever since.
Didn’t play bass at the time, but later … after I bought my first fretless, this was the first song I taught myself.
Nice to hear she’s kicking ass in London. Wish I could be there to see it.
*Okay, not entirely true. My Dad took the family to see Ken Russell’s Tommy in the theater when I was six.
Fell in love with her when I saw her on SNL. By coincidence, I happened to be surfing her videos when I saw this thread.
We leave on Saturday for London and our show is on Tuesday the 2nd. I’ve been trying to avoid spoilers so I opened this thread with one eye closed and the other eye squinting. I breathed a sigh of relief. I’ll read the links when we get back. I’m so excited I’m ready to pop. My husband and I met 32 years ago because we were both fans, so seeing her together now is beyond a Dream Come True. It’s the most important musical event in both our lives.
Now, if only the Lufthansa pilots don’t strike and the Iceland volcano behaves…
If you’re avoiding all mentions of set-lists then you should ignore this until you get back.
“The Ninth Wave” in its entirety and in sequence should be spectacular. I envy you.
and introduces this busty British girl in gold lame’ tights slinking around atop Paul Schafer’s piano singing “The Man With the Child In His Eyes”. I think her second song that night was “Rolling the Ball” & she was wearing a detective overcoat.
And I’ve been in love ever since.
Here’s “The Man with…” on SNL :
Mildly disappointing that she doesnt include material from my favorite albums–Never For Ever and The Dreaming.
I’m sitting in a Yotel at Heathrow waiting to check in for our 6:00am flight to Zurich, where we’ll change planes for our flight back to Chicago. I’ve just had the best 4 days of my life. Not just the show, which was transcendent, but also all the people we met and things we did. Truly the trip/experience of a lifetime.
The Dreaming is my all-time favorite album, by anybody, but I wasn’t disappointed at all. I went in with no expectations and accepted what she chose to present. To expect specific songs or even specific albums is setting yourself up for automatic disappointment because she can’t please everybody.
