Time is getting near and I just sent an email to the local Las Vegas Dopers for a pre-Dopefest get-together next weekend to shore up the plans. (If you are a local and I didn’t email you, contact me!)
So expect a new thread, or a bump of this one, after next weekend - with more specifics regarding times and locations and plans.
We hope to get as many people coming to Las Vegas as possible, so keep those posts coming if you think you might be able to make it - so far it is looking like a fairly large event - last count was about 20 Dopers planning to attend!
In re-reading this thread, suddenly this post of Rico’s jumped out at me.
:dubious: 1 1/2 hours North Of Vegas? There are only two things that distance from Vegas. Nothing and this place.
Now far be it from me to accuse our esteemed Mod of being an alien or flying a black helicopter, but I’m just saying…
So, my Great trip to the Grand Canyon has been shot in the ass. My entire family, each and individually, came up with reasons why they cannot go. What weenies I am related to! Then, my boss tells me that I can’t have the whole month of August off. Only the second half of August.
I don’t think I can make the trip. I hate saying that. I might make it to Las Vegas another time, though. I will remember to mention it before coming. (The friends in Arizona I was planning on staying with are selling their house in August, too. sheesh.)

Shucks…too bad, as in the gift bag was your choice of male or female hooker, a bottle of your favorite beverage, $10,000 in cash, keys to a Porsche, three free nights at the Palms fantasy tower and a get-out-of-jail card good for most felonies.
Oh well - let us know if you can come next time…
Although as I state on my website I am not a huge fan of downtown, German friends of mine stayed at the Four Queens recently and said the rooms were all newly renovated, had flat screen televisions, and were quite nice - and the price for the room was unbelievably cheap! Let me know how you like the place, Cyn, and looking forward to getting together.
We tried that last time with little success - the “discount” didn’t amount to much. However, when we Las Vegas Dopers get together next weekend, we will see what we can do this time around - so if you want to wait to book until next week…
And regarding which end of the Strip - avoid the north end near Stratosphere as that is an “iffy” neighborhood, especially if you are doing a lot of walking.
We’re still good to go. The wife broke her foot a couple of weeks ago, but she’s bound and determined to be 100% by Comic-Con, which means she’ll be ready for Vegas 2 weeks later.
Can’t speak for that route specifically, but Southwest Airlines is a good choice - they are the major carrier here in Las Vegas, so my guess is that it will be a quick, good flight. I would strongly suggest getting something to eat before you leave, as you will be lucky to get a bag with four peanuts during the flight.
Southwest isn’t exactly a four star restaurant in the sky.
Southwest is about as reliable as you’re gonna get. Tell the cabbie to keep to the surface streets and go down Paradise if your hotel is on the east side of the Strip. Definitely eat before you fly, or pack a lunch. BTW, MDW is Chicago (Midway).
Yeah you had fresh batteries in it for the Surf Dope that is for sure. I did not get much a chance to talk to you that night as you were at the other end of the table.
