Last Comic Standing 7/13

I thought it was a good episode. I felt bad for the comics when they had to do that challenge. I mean, children? Have the producers no heart? Kathleen deserved the win, and I was impressed by John’s plan. It almost worked.

I’m upset that Tammy got her way and Jay was challenged. I liked him, but Gary was funnier. He was a lot better than last week. If he would have used last week’s material, Jay would have beat him soundly.

Those are just my thoughts. What are yours?

My thoughts? I know comedy is subjective, but Jay London’s act is probably the most open to interpretation I’ve ever seen. It’ soooooooooo hit or miss, and he can either be the most unstoppable comic force out there, or a complete and total cricket-fest. His comedy is so dependent on the audience being into, and in the mood for, a poor-man’s Steven Wright.

I still don’t get why people are so afraid of Kathleen Madigan. Out of the remaining comics, I think she’s the most vulnerable.

Alonzo Bodden is the 800 pound gorilla on this show. I can’t see anyone taking him down unless he has a bad night.

Yeah, Gary had a really good set, he got that one hands-down.

I found Gary’s set to be old-hat, I’ve heard similar routines before. I did laugh once or twice and I think he’s a good, if predictable comic.

Jay London on the other hand is creative and intelligent. I laughed, smiled or groaned at everything he did. I like humor that engages my mind and shows me a different way to look at the world. I really want to see more of his stuff.

I think Alonzo will win. Kathleen has the most polished act, and the rest of them are funny (unlike the first woman booted off), but I think alonzo has the most presence on stage.

I don’t know what’s up with them bringing back the previously booted comics and if one of them has a chance to get back in, I hope it’s Jay (obviously), and of the ones remaining, I really think Corey should go next.

I was at the gym last night, so I just caught the end of the “I think I’m funnier than __________” announcements (so they all know who doesn’t like them, that’s interesting), and the face-off. (I’d also seen part of the initial “who’s going to some city” where they narrowed it to 50 comics or something)

Just based on the small bit I saw, Jay London was entirely un-funny. He may have had some great sets on other days, days when I wasn’t watching. But last night’s show was almost painful. Saying something slightly off-kilter deadpan then repeating it (also deadpan) and then repeating it a third time, until people finally give a loud enough pity laugh just to get you to move on isn’t entertaining. Steven Wright somehow makes the style work. London didn’t.

They did this last season, and if I remember correctly, the people booted off will pick who performs that night. And I agree with you on Corey. I’ve seen him on Premium Blend. I didn’t like him then, I don’t like him now.

I was sad to see Jay London go, but I think Gary was definitely funnier last night. Jay’s bit where he says stuff like “it’ll be over soon and you’ll never have to see me again” or “I’ll just move over here” might be mildly funny if it happened once or twice but that made up the most of his act last night. When it’s done repeatedly like that it’s just pointing out how much he’s bombing.

Still I was annoyed to see him get sent to the challenge because Tammy really pissed me off over that. Jay seemed to be the sweetest guy around, he even made her a damned grilled cheese sammich! I hope she choked on it! Anyway I think it would have been more justice if Tammy had had to go up against Jay … and lost. Ant mentioned that he wasn’t the one calling the shots in the alliance, so I’m thinking it must be Tammy.

I love Tammy. Finally a smart and tough woman on a reality show. I have not seen any other respectable woman on any other reality show. I hope she and Kathleen will make it to the final five.

Anyone else think that the most realistic people in reality television are on this show?

London killed himself by constantly badmouthing his own act. Repeating a joke once can be funny. The “you’ll never see me again” bit would be funny once. The “it’s almost over, miss” thing is funny… once. Doing it over and over again just makes it seem as if he’s trying to convince the audience he sucks. Well, he convinced me. I thought his act was horrible.

As to the alliances and stuff, I couldn’t care less. I turn the channel when they start yapping at each other in the house. I wanna see jokes.

Tammy is sort of funny, I guess. She needs to add a little dimension to her act. The only jokes I’ve seen were about how she’s Sicillian. It’s funny for a while but it gets old. Kathleen will make it to the final five because the rest of the comedians are afraid to go up against her.

Final Standings

1 & 2)Alonzo Bodden & Kathleen Madigan - both are ridiculously funny and have seperated themselves from the rest. Alonzo has top shelf material, links jokes together well and proved himself under pressure during the Roast. Kathleen because of other sets I’ve seen her do.
-small gap
3)Corey Holcomb - Funny but there’s something about his comedy I don’t enjoy, not because it isn’t funny but there’s another reason. My mind is gone right now but I seem to think that at times I feel a little guilty when I laugh.
4)John Heffron - Good and I laugh at times but a b - level comedian and will always be an opening act I figure.
-big gap-
5)Tammy Pescatelli or Gary Gullman - Amateurs. Moderately funny at times but their sets need work. Gary has beaten two other comedians but the two he beat simply weren’t funny and any of the other competitors could have beat them that day.

Just my 2 cents.

The only way I can illustrate why I don’t like him is this joke he did during auditions: (Paraphrased) “Men, you work hard for that house. You work hard to provide her with everything, but if she says you’re gone, that’s it. You have to leave, and then it’s her house. Then you’ll come by to see your kids, and then there’ll be some guy like me opening the door. 'Yeah, this is a nice place. Like what you did with it. Want to play with the pool table. Hey, your dad’s here. Hurry up!..Hey, don’t get that attitude with me, or else I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

I guess when I see him, I think of a sleezeball.

That wasn’t the joke I was thinking of, but it ceretainly illustrates my point. I’d forgotten about that one.

I liked Gulman’s bit about the Pill and thought he made an interesting point.

I think Alonzo is a realy strong contender. He’s funny, he’s good writer and he’s likable.

Alonzo is my pick. I think the whole audience of kids thing was a bad idea. That really isn’t about comedy except in a clownish, splapstick sort of way. But then, maybe that was the point — to expose the contestants to as many aspects of comedy, from the lowest of the low (slapstick) to the highest of the high (roasts). I think it should have been obvious to the comedians that the kids were wildly responsive to the warm-up clown and that that’s the sort of thing they would have liked. Instead, we wound up with people trying to conceive tricks just to keep their names at the forefront. None of them, including Alonzo, did any good on that set. Kathleen won it, but not for comedy. In fact, the whole thing seemed quite random. They could have foregone the sets altogether and just said, “Kids, run up here and stick buttons on someone,” and then have the comics begging for stickers amidst the mayhem. That’s what ended up happening anyway.
